“It was a most welcome surprise and a great consolation to me to receive the letter that Your Most Reverend Excellency kindly deigned to write me.
I congratulate Your Most Reverend Excellency on the growing devotion to the Virgin Lady of Fátima. My wish is to be able to contribute as much as possible to spreading it to Belgium as well. Circumstances do not allow me to do a great deal; but the very little I do will count for much, provided it has the blessing of the Most Holy Virgin. The Belgians are in general wary of events like those of Fátima, and this is owing to the reports of various apparitions which, after the great war, were said to have taken place and which in the end were found to be mere speculation.
For this reason they demand hard facts and plenty of documentation, especially photographs. Photographs do indeed show reality, and support, with their silent but tangible language, the spoken account of the facts.
On this point I already have a good number of photographic postcards of the religious movement at the Cova da Iria. I am sorry, however, not to have obtained any photograph either of the village of Fátima, or of the parish Church, or of the surroundings of the Cova da Iria. Now, photographs of that kind are just what would be greatly appreciated, alongside those of the seers and of the Image of Our Lady of the Rosary. God grant that next year something of the kind will be available.
I thank you very much for the six issues of the Revue du Rosaire. The narrative of the events of Fátima given in them has been much appreciated. Nevertheless I take the liberty of setting out to Your Most Reverend Excellency the
impression left on me by reading this review, as well as the books on the same subject: Fátima by Leopoldo Nunes and As grandes maravilhas de Fátima by the Visconde de Montelo.
I have observed that there is no agreement on data and details, which I might call historical and fundamental, among these various narratives of the apparitions of Fátima. Thus, for example, I do not understand how the Visconde de Montelo says, on page eleven of his book, that the apparition seemed no more than eighteen years old, while on page ninety he asserts that Lúcia said the Vision seemed about fifteen years old (1)2. On page twelve he speaks of a rosary with a gold cross; then on page seventy-four the cross is white, according to Lúcia. (2)3. And there are other divergences of this kind which, above all in a few years' time, will be an embarrassment to anyone who wishes to write a history of Fátima. I say this in the hope that Your Most Reverend Excellency may perhaps be able to remedy this drawback by having a very precise account drawn up as regards dates, details relating to the Lady who appeared, to the seers, etc., etc.
I am quite sure that in my article in French there will be one or two things that are less exact; nevertheless I tried to write what seemed to me most in keeping with the seers' statements and, in general, with the data provided by the Voz da Fátima.
It remains for me to thank you for the collection of the Voz da Fátima, which enlightened me on some points and which I shall shortly send back to Your Most Reverend Excellency.
Resta-me agradecer a colecção da Voz da Fátima que me elucidou sôbre alguns pontos e que brevemente remeterei a V. Ex.cia Rev.ma.
I beg pardon for the time I have taken from Your Most Reverend Excellency and for my boldness in setting out my unqualified opinion; I do so, however, for the greater glory of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima”.
