Letter from Dr. Manuel Nunes Formigão to Dom José Alves Correia da Silva, Bishop of Leiria, about the reports of the Parish Priest of Fátima and of the Vicar of Porto de Mós on the Fátima apparitions. He also clarifies some aspects of the apparitions that had been criticised by Fr. Domingos José dos Reis Lima, from whose letter he takes quotations 3 to 11. Quotations 1 and 2 are from a letter by Gaspar Pizarro.

[1] Most Excellent and Most Reverend Lord

[1] Ex.mo e Rev.mo Senhor

Santarém, 22 January 1930

Santarem, 22 de Janeiro de 1930

I beg Your Excellency to be so charitable as to forgive my delay in answering your most esteemed letters. Whenever I want to write someone a letter rather longer than usual, I inevitably have to put the task off from day to day, to my great regret but with no possible remedy, because of the work and worries that crop up at every step of my way.

On Saturday I sent the reports of the Parish Priest of Fátima and of the Vicar of Porto de Mós to the Bishop's Palace, addressed to Fr. Maia. It is indeed [1v] right to meet the requests of the Rev. Dr. Fischer, not only because of his devotion to the cause of Our Lady of Fátima, but also because his intense promotional work is doing a great deal to make the events of Fátima known in all the German-speaking countries. I can do without the report of the Vicar of Porto de Mós without much inconvenience, and also without the report of the Parish Priest of Fátima, of which I have a copy in a notebook, but I should like to have at my disposal, if possible, the pamphlet and the two newspaper cuttings attached to it.

I am most grateful for Your Excellency's kind offer of Dr. Fischer's book. He was good enough to give me a copy, which I lent to a friend so that it could be read by the German [2] community in Porto. As I expect to get it back later, I do not want Your Excellency to go to the trouble of sending me a new copy, which may be more needed elsewhere. It is above all copies of the translation that I shall need to obtain.

For the purposes of the French translation of the book “ As grandes maravilhas de Fatima”, I will most willingly make – and I say so in all sincerity – all the corrections and changes that Your Excellency wishes, even if I should happen not to agree with them. But this does not prevent me, already spoilt by so many extremes of kindness on Your Excellency's part, from taking the liberty of setting out to you, with filial confidence, what I think of the objections made in the [2v] two letters you were kind enough to send me. So as not to make this account too long, I shall try to express myself as concisely as possible.

1. “Thus, for example, I do not understand how the V. de M.* can say, on page 11 of his book, that the apparition seemed to be no more than 18 years old, whereas on page 90 he states that Lucia said the vision seemed to be about fifteen years old”.

A. On page 11 I state that the apparition seems to be no more than 18 years old because once Lucia's mother, in the presence of her daughter and of other people, told me, when I asked how old the vision looked, that she looked like a girl from the hamlet of Aljustrel who was present and who was already 17. On page 90 I state [3] that Lucia said the Vision seemed to be about 15 years old, because she really did say so, although she was a simple, uneducated little girl, only 10 years old, and incapable of judging a person's age accurately. Besides, the difference between about fifteen years and no more than eighteen years is not great, and the expression I use on page 90 not only does not contradict or exclude the statement on page 11 but actually completes it and brings us closer to the truth.

R. A pag. A pag.

2. “On page 12 he speaks of a rosary with a gold cross; then, on page 74, the cross is white, according to Lucia”.

2. “A pag.

A. The words on page 74 are a transcription from the pamphlet “Os episodios maravilho-[3v]sos de Fatima”, published in 1921. They were written about ten years ago, certainly on the basis of notes which,

if they still exist, are not easy for me to find now among my papers. But if I was relying on statements of the seers that I kept in my memory, it is utterly impossible for me to state precisely, after so many years, which of the children assured me that the cross of the rosary was, or looked like, gold. Was it Francisco? Was it Jacinta? I do not know. It must be stressed that Lucia, like her cousins, sometimes said that certain parts of the vision's body or certain items of its clothing were white because of the clear, brilliant light that surrounded it and almost blinded their eyes. Page 77, Lucia: "It's that [4] she sometimes blinds". Page 94, Francisco: "I can look at her face, but only a little, because of the light". But on the hypothesis, very improbable in any case, that it was a slip of memory, or a concern to round off the phrase to the inadvertent detriment of the journey, I mean of historical truth, the detail appears so insignificant, of such minor importance, that I see no objection to suppressing, purely and simply, the qualifier "gold" in future.

3. "The death of the seer Francisco Marto, page 125 ff., is very clear: day, month and year, both of birth and of death, very good. But that of Jacinta, page 131 ff., could not be more incomplete. By linking the accounts on page 40 with [4v] that on page 134, it can be calculated that she died on 18-II-20. But there is no certainty. Jacinta deserved more and better".

3. "A morte do vidente Francisco Marto, pag.

A. The account of Jacinta's death was written by Dr. Alberto Diniz da Fonseca, who, when I read him my notes on that episode, offered to write it up for inclusion in the pamphlet "Os episodios maravilhosos de Fatima", from which I transcribed it into the book "As grandes maravilhas de Fatima". I believe it is the best passage in the book. If it gives no dates, that is because the author of the passage aimed above all at moral and religious effect; and if the author of the book did not think it necessary, when transcribing it into the book, to give [5] dates and other details, that is because he had already done so on page 19 of the pamphlet "Os Acontecimentos de Fatima", published in 1923.

4. "The description of the appearance of the miraculous spring, page 164, leaves much to be desired: "which gushed forth crystal-clear and abundant...!"

A. In the place indicated there is not a description but a mere allusion. That description was given, with an indication of dates and a wealth of detail, on page 18 of the pamphlet "Os acontecimentos de Fatima". Moreover, it should be noted that the place where reference is made to the miraculous spring belongs to an article transcribed from the "Voz da Fatima", in which there was no room for such a description, which was assumed to have been given already.

[5v] 5. “The various interrogations of the seers are not very successful”.

A. Fully agreed. I am the first to acknowledge and regret that shortcoming. If only I could have foreseen the future at the time I conducted them... The questions I put were not prepared beforehand. I lived about 75 kilometres away, and it was only once or twice, in passing, in a great hurry, in a few short minutes always or almost always interrupted by other people, that I questioned the seers. I asked them whatever questions occurred to me at the time. I did not suppose that the events would come to have the importance they in fact have. The notes I took were for my private use [6] and so that I could more easily repeat to people I knew what I had heard from the children. I did not intend them for publication. Are they incomplete, deficient, imprecise? They could not be otherwise, given the state of mind and the circumstances in which they were taken. But it is also true that no fuller or more detailed ones have appeared so far.

6. On the rotation of the sun, at the last apparition, neither on page 16, nor on 101, nor on 116 does he say whether it was towards the west or towards the east”.

A. If the rotation took place precisely at astronomical noon, the sun then being at the zenith, what does “rotation towards the e-[6v]ast?” mean? In whatever way the rotation took place, it would always be towards the east. Or does the author of the objection perhaps confuse the movement of rotation with some movement similar to that of translation, which did not occur and which nobody speaks of? And what importance could the fact that the rotation took place in one direction and not in another have for the scientific or miraculous explanation of the solar phenomenon? In none of the descriptions of the phenomenon that have been made public – and they have been very numerous – is any allusion made to the direction of that movement.

7. “In a critique it could be said that Our Lady appeared with a mantle in the Portuguese style; with her hands joined, in the Portuguese style; that she spoke Portuguese in Portugal”.

A. May the author of the [7] objection forgive me, but this observation is truly childish and moreover shows a complete ignorance of the various characteristics and forms of supernatural visions.

8. “She chose the 13th, a day of ill omen in Portugal”.

A. But are we dealing here with a history or with a novel? How can the author of the book be to blame for Our Lady having preferred the 13th to appear? And if she chose that day, was it not very probably to put an end to the ill omen? Everyone is convinced of it, and

the circumstance that the apparitions took place on the 13th of each month constitutes the hard-[7v]est blow that the so ancient and so inveterate superstition of the number 13 has received in Portugal, and perhaps in the whole world.

9. “The miracles happen, as it were, coldly: the sick woman Maria do Carmo, page 31, gets better little by little. Theresa de Jesus Martins... a month later she was cured, page 305. Another feels cured afterwards... in Ourem, page 320. Another at the end of the novena*, page 328, etc. etc. At Lourdes it is not like that, or was not like that...”

31, vai melhorando pouco a pouco.

A. It is quite clear that the author of the objection has no precise idea of the conditions a cure must satisfy in order to be considered miraculous. For him instantaneousness seems to be a condition sine qua non. Moreover, none of the cures mentioned [8] is recognised as miraculous, but as extraordinary and humanly inexplicable, at least as regards the way it happened. That is also what the doctors clearly imply in their certificates. Only the ecclesiastical authority could declare them miraculous, and to this day it has not yet pronounced on any of the Fátima cases. The first cure mentioned is the subject of a letter to a friend, and it is included in the book in the form of a letter. Earlier the critic wanted an Our Lady who prayed in the Portuguese style, dressed in the Portuguese style and spoke Portuguese. Now he wants an Our Lady who works miracles... in the French style! Such is the force of prejudice! Even in miracles we must follow the fashion from beyond the Pyrenees! Shortly after the apparitions I heard one of the most intelligent and learned priests in Portugal declare that he would only believe that Our Lady had appeared at Fátima if he saw wild roses blooming in winter, as Monsignor Peyramale* had asked at Lourdes. As if the miracle requested had taken place at the Grotto, or as if, had it taken place, it would have to be repeated at Fátima before anyone could believe in the reality and supernatural character of the apparitions!

Tal é a força do preconceito!

And the other cures, the instantaneous ones, accompanied by medical certificates, such as that of Rosa [9] Maria Ribeiro, page 372, and others, are they to have no value? And have there not been at Lourdes countless cures obtained at the end of novenas, during the return journeys, hours and even days after bathing in the pool or after the blessing with the Blessed Sacrament?

10. “The description of the pilgrimages was very tedious for me, etc.”.

A. I believe it and do not dispute it, because, as the old Latin saying goes, de gustibus non est disputandum*. But I know that for many

others, even very intelligent and cultured people, it was not tedious, because they told me so in writing and I cannot doubt their sincerity. One of them is Monsignor Manuel Marinho, [9v] who, in an easily explained excess of enthusiasm produced by reading the book, compares it with Henri Lasserre's "Os factos miraculosos de Lourdes"*. But were those people delighted with the descriptions, which made up most of the book, because they were not demanding from a critical point of view? Because of the book's intrinsic historical, critical or even literary value? Not at all. Solely because they first read the preface, which the author of the objection certainly did not do, and adopted the limited point of view that the author of the book adopted when gathering the materials for it. In the preface, page 6, one reads: "Hence the variety of style, the repetition [10] of ideas and reflections, the insistence on certain points that most vividly impressed the mind of the author, whose role in this work is rather that of a simple chronicler or reporter, conscientious and impartial though he may be, than that of a historian or a critic, in the legitimate and proper sense of the word". It was certainly that criterion and no other that led the literary critic of the "Comercio do Porto", in his review of the literary year in the issue of the first of January this year, to present the books "A Egreja e o Pensamento Contemporaneo", by Dr. Gonçalves Cerejeira*, and "As Grandes Maravilhas de Fatima", by the Visconde do Montello, as the two most important religious works published in Portugal in 1929.

No prefacio, pag.

[10v] In short, the book, as the subtitle on page 1 indicates, is only a bundle of materials for the history of the apparitions and miracles of Our Lady of Fátima; it is not a methodical and complete history, much less a critical history like the one announced in the preface, which is only to be published once the Church's verdict is known.

11. "The seers, especially Lucia, state that the vision had told them that the war would end on 13-X-17. Alluding to this statement several times, the author of the book, noting the inaccuracy of the facts, forgets the date of the armistice and of the peace. It is an unpardonable gap. The armistice was signed at Rethondes [11] at 11 o'clock in the morning of 11-XI-18 and peace was established by the treaty of Versailles on 27-VI-19".

A. I deliberately left my remarks on this objection to the end. After what has been said, there is little more to add. Everyone

Todos

knows that this is one of the main difficulties to be resolved, and that the solutions put forward so far are many and varied. Having systematically refrained throughout the book, for the reasons given, from making critical assessments, resolving difficulties and refuting objections, it was not fitting for me to make an exception, so as not to depart from the plan established beforehand.

Nobody [11v] is unaware, I repeat – and it was enough to read the preface to know it – that the book As grandes maravilhas de Fatima is a book of chronicles and not a book of criticism. The explanation of the author's silence in that and similar cases is to be found in the following sentences of the said preface: “This latter task (that of historian and critic), higher and of greater responsibility, he reserves for later, when the Church has pronounced its definitive and final sentence on so momentous a matter. Only then will the work in preparation, “Historia critica dos acontecimentos de Fatima”, be published, in two volumes: “As apparições da Virgem” and “As curas miraculosas”. The author considered that it was too early [12] to venture critical assessments and that it was his strict duty in no way to anticipate the judgement of the ecclesiastical authority on the origin and nature of the apparitions and the marvellous cures of Fátima. It now only remains for me to ask Your Excellency to forgive the length of this testament, which may perhaps be of some use, and also, notwithstanding the objections I have just made to the objections of the two letters, to tell me, without fear of hurting me in the least, which corrections and changes you consider necessary or even advisable. And, if Your Excellency saw no objec-[12v]tion, I would ask my friend Zuzarte de Mendonça, literary critic of “Novidades”*, to prepare for the French edition of the book “As Grandes Maravilhas de Fatima” a short but substantial introduction anticipating these and other possible objections with appropriate reflections, and I would supply him with the material for it.

Thanking you once again for all the kindnesses, so many and so great, that I owe to Your Excellency and that only the Most Holy Virgin, whom I earnestly beg to do so, will be able to repay, I am, with the highest consideration and the most distinguished and affectionate esteem,

Your Most Reverend Excellency's
devoted and much obliged Servant

de V.Ex.cia Rev.ma
