One of the times you came most to mind was on my trip to Fatima. How sorry I was that you could not [2] have witnessed what I saw! I do not know what you will have heard about it, Aunt, but no doubt you are aware that three little shepherds of the Serra, last May, asserted that they had seen Our Lady, who promised to appear to them six more times, the last being in October, and that on that day a sign would be seen in the sky so that all would believe. The apparition was announced for the 13th and already at the beginning of the month there was not in Leiria [2v] or in the other towns of the district a single means of transport available, motor cars having even been hired for 200,000rs. In spite of its being a dreadful day of rain and cold, and in spite of the newspapers not having given it any "publicity", the number of people who gathered at the appointed place is estimated at between 40 and 50 thousand. The order and calm were extraordinary, and in that multitude of people, of every class and every background, many of the men coming from far away [3] with their provisions and their little kegs of wine, there was not a single one who drank a glass too many; I did not see one gesture of annoyance nor hear one ill-sounding word. This alone has something miraculous about it.
We had Aunt Camilla Maldonado staying here and we went with her in her motor car.
The apparition of Our Lady was not an article of faith and I confess I was not much of a believer, but I assure you that I saw, as thousands of people [3v] saw too, there take place in the sky — at the hour fixed by the children — a phenomenon so extraordinary that I do not expect to see its like again in all the days of my life. To describe it in detail would take me very far, and that must wait until we see each other. O Seculo of the 15th has a rather long article on the event, which Your Excias will naturally have seen already. Apart from one or two phrases betraying its origin, it is not badly done, and everything [4] it says there about what was observed in the sky is absolutely true.
The extraordinary colours that the sun displayed were seen by many people (one of them my Aunt Camilla), but those I cannot describe, because when I saw it in that astounding agitation I felt so great an impression that I fell on my knees and could not see anything more.
From the little oak tree beside the spot where the children say they spoke to Our Lady was [4v] picked that little leaf, one of the few that still remained5. All the people wanted them, and the oak, a very small one, did not withstand the assault and was entirely destroyed down to the roots.

5 It is not likely that the leaf referred to belonged to the holm oak, since already in September Dr. Carlos Mendes had had recourse to Lúcia's "reserves", as there were none left on the tree itself.
