My very dear Aunt
Minha muito querida Tia
You have reason to complain of my silence, but do not put it down to forgetfulness or less affection, unless you want to be very unjust. A bit of laziness, the house always full of guests, one of them being
Marianna d'Almeida's little girl, who took up a great deal of [1v] my time, and also always waiting for one of the cousins to write and tell me exactly where they had gone to spend their summer — all this meant that the days went by without my taking up the pen. But countless times, and missing you a great deal, I thought of you all and of the few days we had the pleasure of having you here last year. You came to mind most of all on my trip to Fátima. How sorry I was that you could not [2] have witnessed what I saw! I do not know what you will have heard about it, Aunt, but no doubt you are aware that last May three little shepherds of the Serra* asserted that they had seen Our Lady, who promised to appear to them six more times, the last being in October, and that on that day a sign would be seen in the sky so that all would believe. The apparition was announced for the 13th, and already at the beginning of the month there was not a single means of transport available in Leiria [2v] or in the other towns of the district; people even went so far as to hire motor cars for 200,000 réis*. In spite of its being a dreadful day of rain and cold, and in spite of the newspapers not having given it any "publicity", the number of people who gathered at the appointed place is estimated at between 40 and 50 thousand. The order and calm were extraordinary: in that multitude of people of every class and every background, many of the men having come from far away [3] with their provisions and their little kegs of wine, there was not a single one who drank a glass too many; I did not see one gesture of annoyance or hear one coarse word. This alone has something miraculous about it.
We had Aunt Camilla Maldonado staying here and we went with her in her motor car.
The apparition of Our Lady was not an article of faith, and I confess I was not much of a believer, but I assure you that I saw, as thousands of people [3v] saw too, a phenomenon take place in the sky — at the hour fixed by the children — so extraordinary that I do not expect to see its like again as long as I live. To describe it in detail would take me too far; that must wait until we meet. O Seculo* of the 15th has a rather long article on the event, which you will naturally have seen already. Apart from one or two phrases that betray its origin, it is not badly done, and everything [4] it says about what was observed in the sky is absolutely true.
The extraordinary colours that the sun displayed were seen by many people (one of them my Aunt Camilla), but I cannot describe them, because when I saw it in that astounding agitation I was so overcome that I fell to my knees and could see nothing more.
That little leaf was [4v] picked from the little oak beside the spot where the children say they spoke to Our Lady; it was one of the few still left5. All the people wanted them, and the oak, a very small one, did not withstand the assault and was entirely destroyed down to the roots.
It seems that Our Lady said she wanted a chapel to be raised to her at that spot; that she recommended that they pray the rosary and that she said the war would end on a 13th.
She also confided a secret to the children, but there are no human forces [5] capable of making them tell it. Everything has been tried: threats, entreaties, bribes, and even a person of authority, to test them, tried to intimidate them with religious scruples. All was useless, and they still remain just as firm. My Parents and Zinha also went to Fátima yesterday to see them close up and speak with them. They say they are very likeable, but not pretty6; it is the little boy who is adorable. They are [5v] very poor, and the Mother is a holy woman who has had to put up with a great deal from her husband, a drunkard of the first order. Neither she nor the Parish Priest has been willing to take charge of the alms, but another little woman has taken that on, and they already have well over 100,000.
I do not know if I would bore you with all these details, but I wanted to send them to you, thinking they would interest you.
I am so glad the cousins have enjoyed their stay [6] in Cascaes. Our summer was the quietest possible and I did not leave the estate. On Saturday I am leaving with Aunt Camilla and am going to spend a month in Santiago.
My Mother is going to Lisbon with Zinha in mid-November, and you, Aunt, will take me there afterwards. I hope Uncle Eduardo has been well and that you feel less run-down than the last time you wrote to us.
How I long to see you all!
Tomara ver todos!
[6v] In health we are fair, and Zinha a little better. My Parents always sad and downcast. About Max we ask few questions, but I hear that he has been working immensely and has been promoted to captain.
Goodbye, dear Aunt, for I am already ashamed of the length of this letter. To you all our most affectionate remembrances, a big hug to Uncle and kisses to the little girls. With the greatest tenderness your niece embraces you too,
most loving and devoted,
Mto. Aga. e Dda.
