Pe. Manuel dos Santos Canastreiro
From Benedicta, where I was serving as parish priest, I went to Fátima by carriage, in the company of Fr. Joaquim Antonio do Carmo, his uncle Antonio d’Almeida, and cousins Isabel and Elvira. We left on the 12th at 10 a.m., and reached Batalha at about 4 o'clock in the afternoon. We visited the Monastery. There we already found parishioners of mine, and after our arrival others came. Perhaps a hundred and something of them were there at night. At the inn I made the acquaintance of the Most Excellent Canon Balthasar and his nieces. I slept in a room in which Mr Claudio Ribeiro and Joaquim Paulo, of Turquel, were also quartered”.
