English

On jumping down, after a long journey, at about sixteen hours yesterday, at the station of Chão de Maçãs5, where religious people who had come from distant parts to attend the “miracle” also alighted, I asked point-blank a young lad from the regular “char-à-banc” service whether he had already seen the Lady. With his sardonic smile and sidelong look, he did not hesitate to answer me:

— All I ever saw there was stones, carts, motor cars, beasts of burden and people!
