I was minding the sheep in the cova de Iria with my cousin Francisco and Jacinta, playing at building a wall round a bush; and we saw a flash of lightning; and I said to Francisco, let's go home because there's lightning and a thunderstorm may come; we turned the sheep round to go home; when we got to the middle of the field, there was another flash of lightning and we saw a Lady above a holm-oak shrub; we were very frightened to see that brightness that surrounded her. Then She said to us: don't be afraid because I won't do you any harm. I asked her, Where are you from? I am from heaven. What do you want of me? I want you to come here for 6 months and at the end I will tell you what I want. I asked her about José das Neves's Maria and She told me she is in heaven; I asked her about Amelia and she told me that she was in purgatory. If she told me anything else this month I don't remember. And with that she disappeared, rising so high that in the end we couldn't see her any more.

Eu sou do céu.

2 The present document was written by the seer Lúcia at the request of her confessor at the Asilo de Vilar, Fr. Manuel Pereira Lopes, as can be gathered from a letter he wrote to Dom João Pereira Venâncio on 26 July 1961: “I was very pleased to be included among the priests who, at the behest of His Excellency Dom José, the late lamented Bishop of Leiria, attended her deposition at the first session of the Official Process of the Apparitions of Fátima (cf. DCF, vol. 2, Doc. 8, of 8 July 1924). What I heard from her then, and what is recorded in the process, confirmed an account which she had written about those apparitions at my request. A simple description, with spelling mistakes, which gave off a sweet fragrance of spontaneity and sincerity. Unfortunately I lent that original, which I valued highly, to someone who did not return it. Certainly it took nothing away from and added nothing to her later deposition” (AEL, Documentos de Fátima, J-29). It was in the possession of Dr. Sebastião dos Reis, who published it and gave it to Fr. António Maria Martins; after the latter's death it was handed over by the Portuguese Province of the Society of Jesus to the Sanctuary of Fátima.
