On the thirteenth day of the month of October, when he left Boleiros with other people, it began to rain. His sister was afraid she would not come back, because people said that bombs would be thrown, but he calmed her, saying that if it was Our Lady who appeared there, no harm would come to her, for Our Lady would not allow it. The rain was heavy and the wind blew hard, so that he got quite wet despite carrying an umbrella. So when he reached the parish church he went to the house of a cousin and dried himself. At a certain point in the conversation he had with her, he said to her: “Surely the children won't go there in this rain.” – “They will,” she said, “even if it rains buckets”. Many people were worried about the animals that had carried them, but it is not reported that any harm came to them because of the rain. The rain having passed, at about one o'clock, he set off for the place, and near the road he met a priest from Penacova, who asked him where the place of the apparition was, the deponent pointing out to him the spot where a haze could be seen, a rather dense little smoke, which did not surprise him, as he thought it was incense burned in honour of Our Lady; he was surprised afterwards when they told him that there had been no smoke there at all, that no
--- fire of any kind had been made there, not even a match had been struck. Suddenly the priest looks at the sun and says that the sun in eclipse was not like that. The deponent also looked and saw that the sun gave no light; across it ran a white haze; it was a moon without brightness. The sun was to the left, the rest of the sky being overcast. Taking his eyes off the sun, he saw the people a very vivid red; and he exclaimed: “Oh, gentlemen, how red all the people are!” And the priest answered: “could they be red handkerchiefs?” To which he observed: “How can that be? Did they all agree to have red handkerchiefs over their shoulders?!” Then the people appeared the colour of gold. He did not see the rotating movements of the sun. The people at that moment were shouting a great deal, kneeling and with hands raised, crying out to Our Lady, paying no attention to the mud, of which there was a lot, invoking Our Lady again and again. The impression on the people was extraordinary.
No dia treze do mês de outubro quando saiu de Boleiros com outras pessoas, começou a chover. A irmã estava com medo de não voltar, porque diziam que lançavam bombas, mas ele sossegou-a dizendo que se fosse Nossa Senhora que ali aparecia, não lhe sucederia mal algum, pois Nossa Senhora não o havia de consentir. A chuva era muita e o vento soprava com força de maneira que se molhou bastante apesar de levar chapéu de chuva. Por isso quando chegou ao pé da igreja paroquial foi a casa de uma prima e enxugou-se. A certa altura da conversa que teve com ela, disse-lhe: “Naturalmente as crianças não vão lá com esta chuva.” – “Vão, disse ela, nem que chova a potes”. Muitas pessoas estavam aflitas por causa dos animais que as tinham transportado, mas não consta que lhes sucedesse mal por causa da chuva. Tendo passado a chuva, cerca da uma hora, dirigiu-se para o local e perto da estrada encontrou um sacerdote de Penacova, que lhe perguntou onde era o local da aparição, indicando-lhe o depoente o ponto onde se via uma névoa, um fumozinho, bastante denso, que não estranhou por julgar que era incenso queimado em honra de Nossa Senhora, ficando depois admirado quando lhe disseram que não havia lá fumo nenhum, que não se tinha lá feito lume de qualidade nenhuma, nem um fósforo se tinha acendido. De repente o sacerdote olha para o sol e diz que o sol em eclipse não era assim. O depoente olhou também e viu que o sol não dava luz; sobre ele corria uma névoa branca, era uma lua sem brilho. O sol ficava à esquerda, estando o resto do céu encoberto. Tirando os olhos do sol, viu o povo de um encarnado muito vivo; e exclamou: “Ai, senhores, o povo como está todo encarnado!” E respondeu-lhe o sacerdote: “serão lenços encarnados?” Ao que ele observou: “Como pode ser? Então tinham-se todos combinado para terem lenços encarnados sobre as costas?! “Depois o povo apareceu da cor do ouro. Os movimentos de rotação do sol não os viu. O povo nessa ocasião gritava muito, ajoelhado e com as mãos levantadas, gritando por Nossa Senhora, não se importando com a lama que era muita, invocando repetidamente Nossa Senhora. A impressão do povo foi extraordinária.
