You can even rest assured that science and lofty thought had many representatives there. Well, Mr Miguel, from one of those people, whom I knew in Coimbra and who was always held in esteem in university circles for his learning and his probity, I heard these words: "In the presence of facts of this nature science has to confess itself powerless to explain such a phenomenon, which astronomy had not foreseen".

Pode ficar mesmo certo de que a sciencia e o alto pensamento ali tinham muitos representantes. Pois, sr. Miguel, a uma dessas creaturas que eu conheci em Coimbra e que no meio universitario foi sempre considerado pelo seu saber e pela sua probidade, ouvi estas palavras: "Em presença de factos desta natureza a sciencia tem de confessar-se impotente para explicar um phenomeno semelhante e que a astronomia não tinha previsto".
