“THE LADY OF FÁTIMA”

“A SENHORA DA FÁTIMA”

A word or two to Mr Miguel Pinto, contributor to the “Jornal de Leiria”.

Duas palavras ao sr. Miguel Pinto, colaborador do “Jornal de Leiria”.

I do not know Mr Miguel Pinto even by name, but from his prose printed in the latest issue of the “Jornal de Leiria” I see that Mr Miguel Pinto, though he may be a skilled craftsman, a shoemaker, a musician or whatever else, is no model as a journalist, for a very simple reason: he lacks judgement, and along with authority he lacks coherence and good sense.

I am not going today — my occupations leave me no time for it — to perform an autopsy on his article, in which his pen let fall so many absurdities and insults. Perhaps that will be left for another day...

First of all, I confess to him that I am one of the humble and the ignorant, as Mr Miguel Pinto calls — dubs — the people of his own region.

I am also a believer and I went to Fátima, but I was not dragged there by the religious fanaticism to which Mr Miguel Pinto resorts to explain the extraordinary influx of believers and unbelievers to that place. No. And so, Mr Miguel, I here place on record my most vehement protest against the label 'confidence trick' with which he dismisses the extraordinary phenomena that I witnessed along with many thousands of people drawn from all social classes.

Yes, Mr Miguel, and in that great manifestation of faith, which in the end was joined by some people who until then had been unbelievers, I saw every walk of life well represented, from the élite

Sim, sr.

of our best society to the humblest and roughest peasants. You can even rest assured that science and lofty thought had many representatives there. Well, Mr Miguel, from one of those people, whom I knew in Coimbra and who was always held in esteem in university circles for his learning and his probity, I heard these words: "In the presence of facts of this nature science has to confess itself powerless to explain such a phenomenon, which astronomy had not foreseen". This testimony, like that of so many others I can cite to you whenever you wish, comes from people who are no more ignorant than Mr Miguel Pinto, and yet they do not explain things with the ease with which Mr Miguel Pinto claims to do so.

So you may as well confess that you missed a great opportunity to keep quiet, and that ignorance is very bold.

And with no more for today, until soon, God willing.
