I am also a believer and I went to Fátima, but I was not dragged there by the religious fanaticism to which Mr Miguel Pinto resorts to explain the extraordinary influx of believers and unbelievers to that place. No. And so, Mr Miguel, I here place on record my most vehement protest against the label 'confidence trick' with which he dismisses the extraordinary phenomena that I witnessed along with many thousands of people drawn from all social classes.

Yes, Mr Miguel, and in that great manifestation of faith, which in the end was joined by some people who until then had been unbelievers, I saw every walk of life well represented, from the élite of our best society to the humblest and roughest peasants. You can even rest assured that science and lofty thought had many representatives there. Well, Mr Miguel, from one of those people, whom I knew in Coimbra and who was always held in esteem in university circles for his learning and his probity, I heard these words: "In the presence of facts of this nature science has to confess itself powerless to explain such a phenomenon, which astronomy had not foreseen".

As I have already told you, I went to Fátima and witnessed some extraordinary phenomena; what is more, I am inwardly convinced that the supernatural manifested itself there. But until Holy Church, the infallible teacher of truth, does so, I will not come forward to proclaim the reality of the miracle. In this respect my opinion is a purely personal one.
