THE MIRACLE SWINDLE HOW THEY ARE TRYING TO LEAD THE PEOPLE ASTRAY WHAT HAS BEEN HAPPENING AT FATIMA
A BURLA DOS MILAGRES COMO SE PRETENDE DESVAIRAR O POVO O QUE SE TEM PASSADO EM FATIMA
O Mundo referred yesterday to what has been happening in the village of Fatima, council of Vila Nova de Ourem, with the appearance of a saint who, on the 13th of each month, deigns to speak to three poor children who humbly go to mind livestock at the Cova de Santa Iria3, on the slope of the Serra de Aires4... The case has been a success, and the ingenuous people have listened enraptured to this marvellous story, which in times gone by would have enchanted them but which at this moment cannot be taken seriously — so clearly do the explanation and the speculation emerge. Is it a case of hallucination of poor children who assiduously frequent the church, or of a clerical design? That is what the authorities have the duty to ascertain, and we are sure they will do so, since at the head of the council there is a dedicated republican, Mr Artur de Oliveira Santos, who has been exemplary in the fulfilment of his duty. The case already bears the stamp of clerical exploitation. O Ouriense, the clerical bulletin of the council of Vila Nova de Ourem, edited by a priest, writes the following:
This parish (Fatima) experienced on the 13th last the most marvellous and moving spectacle that the imagination could conceive. Does the Queen of the Angels wish to make this parish a second Lourdes?!! Ah!! Who would deserve it?!! To God and the Virgin Mother it is not impossible. It was not possible to make an approximate calculation of the number of people who came from so many leagues away, from the humble little shepherd and the rough farmer to those who make pleasant outings in swift motor cars, to take note of some proof of the much-publicised Apparition of Our Lady to 3 children of this parish (3rd time 13-7-917). All the people, or at least most of them, were satisfied merely to see the way in which the children presented themselves and spoke — aski[n]g...requesting...and waiting for time for the reply without anyone else hearing them.
As can be seen, the clericals already accept as an established fact that the apparition was genuine.
How the speculation began
Como se deu inicio á especulação
The beginning of the clerical speculation was on 13 May. Three children — Lucia, aged 10, Francisco, aged 8, and Jacinta, aged 7 — living at Aljustrel, were on the vast plain of the Cova de Santa Iria grazing docile sheep when a lady appeared to them, all dressed in white, says Lucia. The lady told the little shepherds that they should learn to read and write and that on the 13th of each month she would appear to them at the same spot, beside an oak. On 13 October she would come down from heaven to earth for the last time to make peace in the world — and put an end to the war. All the people who did not believe in her work would be punished.
There you have the example of yet another symbol of purity who comes to redeem the world through goodness, but at the same time threatens to strike down those who will not believe in her virtues. The same hatred appears in the sickly and erotic legend of the apparition of the Virgin to St
The virgin also appeared to him in dreams and voluptuously implored him to go out into the world.
— Go, Dominic, go and preach my rosary to the peoples, and tell those who are not converted that all my love will be changed into hatred.
Thus was the Inquisition founded.
Fundou-se assim a Inquisição.
Like that apparition, this one too preaches hatred.
It must be agreed that for children's fantasy this is too much. An uneducated child would not spontaneously have, nor easily retain, the ideas set out. They were prepared beforehand to play this role. Lucia, moreover, is an assiduous churchgoer. In one month alone she went to confession four times. And she insists that she keeps a secret which she can reveal only on 13 October. The priests have been flocking to the spot and — a curious thing! — all of them find in the little girl the traits of that well-spoken parrot who was Bernadette of Lourdes.
More apparitions, and hatred against the liberals begins to show itself
On 13 June the children again saw the lady, at the same spot and at the same time, between 12 and 14 hours. Along with the children there appeared some people who saw nothing, but who thought they saw. The priests began to exploit the case, trying to make people believe in a genuine miracle. Poor women of the people recalled phrases heard in catechism, and simple children of tender age at once dreamed of a good angel who would appear to the little ones to give [them] eternal joy. Consumptives, cripples, the sick of various kinds, writhing in suffering, at once seized the opportunity and begged the poor seers to act as intermediaries with the apparition for the cure of their ills.
On 13 August everyone wanted to attend the apparition, preparing to follow the children to the Cova de Santa Iria. It was then that the authority intervened, taking the children to Ourem, so
that they should give no more pretexts for speculation. In the field a poor old woman still went to enormous trouble to see the lady, while at the same time holy creatures were inciting the simple people, still fanaticised by the perverse work of the church, to kill the republicans, the freemasons, the liberals. And the priests sanction, when they do not provoke, these manifestations of credulity, in which there is something of shamelessness and much of ignorance.
