Most Excellent and Most Reverend Sir
Exmo. Revmo. Sr
I am most grateful for Your Reverence's letter, and I am writing to you again to tell you how indignant we all were at the articles in the Ordem, a Catholic newspaper.
It is simply revolting. The ungodly (see the Seculo6) do not deny it; rather, they admit that such facts cannot be explained by the laws of nature and that it was an impressive spectacle. The Ordem [1v] shows doubt about the Apparition, suspects the children of having been influenced by suggestion, and declares that on the following day it saw the same phenomenon in the sun — all to remove any idea of a miracle from the public mind!
My husband7 is going to protest and I think all true Catholics ought to protest, and I confess to you that my inclination was to cancel [2] my subscription and... I don't know yet whether I shall do so.
Dona Maria de Jesus Alte Espargosa8 writes to me and tells me that St Joseph and the Child Jesus also appeared to the children, the Child being between Our Lady and St Joseph. And that Our Lady had ordered Lucia to tell the people to look at the sun, and that if Portugal did not turn away [2v] from its sins a great punishment would come upon it . Might this not already be a 'revised and enlarged edition'*?
Has Your Reverence heard anything about this?
V. Reva ouviu alguma cousa a este respeito?
My husband is better but not yet well.
Will Your Reverence please accept his warmest regards, and believe me, with every consideration,
Queira V. Reva acceitar muitos cumprimentos d’elle e crer-me com toda a consideração
Your Reverence's
De V. Reva.
