FÁTIMA
FÁTIMA
The two articles I wrote on this subject earned A Ordem a series of letters of open displeasure.
I confess that this situation is new to me: finding myself on the other side of the barricade in a dispute with people whom I have no reason not to judge good Catholics.
I therefore thought it necessary to submit myself to an examination of conscience. And it is after it that I write these lines.
I only wish my antagonists would do as much.
First of all: I attest the entire sincerity, that is, the entire subjective truth, of what I wrote.
In the second place: if it is true that not all truths are to be told, I further attest that I was led to write what I wrote because it seemed to me necessary, in a well-understood religious interest, to set an eyewitness testimony against the fever of enthusiasm that I saw spreading somewhat inconsiderately and even imprudently.
To that testimony I did not seek, by a single word of vanity, to give more value than to others. On the contrary, I expressly made allowance for the latter, as in the following passages.
"Now what did we say about the Fátima affair? That we, obscure author of these lines, had not observed any fact that would lead us to suppose the supernatural. But not only is it a
personal and unauthoritative point of view, but in no way do we wish to dispute the observations that other people may have made, different from our own".
The transcription is verbatim.
É textual a transcrição.
If, then, my observation was defective, why so much anger, since I at once made allowance for divergent opinions?
Let us begin, for example (à tout seigneur...), with the following letter from Dr. Almeida Garrett:
Almeida Garrett:
"...Mr Editor...
"...sr. redactor...
"I consider it my strict duty to ask you the favour of publishing these brief lines.
They concern the events of Fátima, predicted months in advance as to the day and hour on which they were to take place.
They were fulfilled completely and rigorously. I protest in my own name, as a Catholic and as one devoted to the natural sciences, which I have taught, against the insertion of two articles published in the Catholic newspaper A Ordem about Fátima, about which articles there would be much to say. I am joined in this protest by so many persons who have learned of this publication. Hoping for your courtesy, I am etc.

Protest? But is there, in my articles, any statement against sound Catholic doctrine? If there is, Your Exa will point it out and strike it down.
Protesto?
If, however, there are only observations or reflections with which Your Exa disagrees, your duty as a man of science is not to protest but to discuss, setting truth against error.
I do not believe the Fátima affair to be so dogmatic that mere doubt, with allowance made for different opinions, is a sin or a heresy deserving of protest.
Your Exa says that about the articles "there would be much to say".
But what a pity you did not say it, which would surely have been worth far more than an unexplained protest.
Did Your Exa go from Granja, from where you write, to Fátima?
If you did, I shall wish with the greatest sincerity and interest that Your Exa
come and tell A Ordem all that you saw, with your double authority as a Catholic and as a man of science.
If you did not, do you know of well-established facts that amount to a miracle?
It would be not only good, but a duty, especially today, after your protest, to come and narrate them.
And if they are convincing, Your Exa will have no more submissive and docile catechumen than this your servant.
On that road we shall meet.
N'esse caminho encontrar-nos-hemos.
But protests! In a matter that is free, one does not protest against erroneous opinions, especially when one is a man of science. One argues.
Agora protestos!
Now comes a second letter
Vem agora segunda carta
This one is phenomenal.
Esta é phenomenal.
In my article of Tuesday, after narrating the second observation I had made, on the Sunday, of the appearance of the sun seen through clouds, I added the warning, given me by a doctor, that it was dangerous to stare at the sun, cases of blindness produced by that imprudence not being rare.
Since, then, it was most naturally to be foreseen that readers of the article would be led to repeat the observation, I thought it my strict duty to warn them of what the doctor had told me.
Well, the warning is taken, in that letter, as a pretension to... wit!!
It says: "then, the following passage with pretensions to wit!?".
Go and be a judge of that...
Vão lá ser juiz...
I formally summon that correspondent to say where, in all of those two articles, he read a passage that would even remotely make him suspect, even in the slightest, any feelings of mine of irreverence or of wit, which would be utterly out of place in such a subject.
If he cannot do so, and the challenge stands here, let him acknowledge that his judgement failed him: or that passion blinded him to the point of not understanding what he read.
In a third letter one reads these extraordinary passages, criticising a passage of my first article which is interpreted in the following way;
N'uma terceira carta, leem-se estes periodos mirabolantes, de critica a uma passagem do meu primeiro artigo que é interpretada do seguinte modo;
...he (the writer of the article) asks leave not to believe the statements (of the three little children) because it may very well be that exploiters of credulity (a term I do not find proper for the case) have influenced the little shepherds with mysterious ends of gain? That is what is for me a phenomenon, in the mind and from the pen of a Catholic!"
Go and be a judge of that... I shall repeat, more and more astonished and saddened by such aberrations in persons whom one had the right to suppose enlightened.
The fact is that in O Seculo of the 12th or 13th there was an article in [which] the events of Fátima were attributed to the manoeuvres of exploiters, with pretensions of making this place a new Lourdes, it said, with the corresponding lucrative consequences for the impresarios, etc., etc.
And it was to refute such calumnies that in Tuesday's article I wrote:
Are the children sincere? we have no reason to doubt it; rather, their rusticity is a guarantee to us.
As for the gloomy stories of exploiters of popular credulity who have influenced the little shepherds with mysterious ends of gain, we ask leave not to believe them without proof.
Do the strong spirits wish us not to believe without proof? Very well. But with equal right we shall demand from those who see the misdeeds of Jesuits in everything those same proofs that they so often ask of us, but which, for their own use, they so easily do without.
Well, this passage is pointed to as a sign that... I had lined up alongside O Seculo.
Even the phrase "exploiters of popular credulity", which I evidently laid at the door of the authors of the gloomy stories, even that is reproached to me as improper to the mind and the pen (with one n) of a Catholic.
Pity is what this makes me feel, and great pity, but not out of personal consideration, rather because I see in the fact one more symptom of the very peculiar mentality of so many Catholics towards their newspaper.
The Catholic newspapers in Portugal are dying of penury.
Lack of goodwill?
Falta de boa vontade?
Perhaps not; but certainly lack of zeal. When that zeal does awaken, however, most active, it is for censure, deserved or undeserved.
And censure that goes as far as the threat of cancelling a subscription, as has now happened again!
Just look at this way of judging!
Ora vejam este criterio!
A Ordem, knowing that I had been at Fátima, asks me to write my impressions for it.
Sabendo A Ordem que eu estivera em Fátima, pede-me lhe escreva as minhas impressões.
In agreeing, I was evidently going to write my own impressions and not other people's.
And, in any case, the poor Ordem could bear no responsibility for these signed articles, except that of having had the idea of asking me for them.
Well, for that crime — of my opinion being different from that of others — all the signal services of A Ordem, to which His Eminence only recently paid the most public tribute, are forgotten — and there is a threat to wound it with the loss of a subscription!
What an intelligent reprisal!
Que intelligente represalia!
And what an excellent understanding of the most strict duty of every Catholic to support his newspaper!

Other critics tell me that it is ill-advised to show hostility to grandiose manifestations of faith such as that of Fátima.
I am not hostile to them. I only fear that they may arise around deceptive appearances — from which would result a damaging repercussion for the Catholic cause.
We Catholics of today should not forget the delicate circumstances in which we live, surrounded by so many enemies.
Will I be told that the same reserve imposed on the Church is not imposed on simple Catholics?
But if her line is, indisputably, one of extreme reserve in circumstances such as those of Fátima, how can that of simple Catholics be the opposite?
If one day the reality of the miracle of Fátima is demonstrated — and I have already said how much I would wish it — believe me that the two articles in A Ordem, instead of being arguments against it, will be one more proof of the miracle and of how it was able to impose itself.
But if on the contrary the emptiness of the present enthusiasms comes to be established, what would be the situation of Catholics if their organ in the press had let itself be carried along by the wave?
And while I am at it, let me tell you that for me manifestations such as those of Fátima, if they are among the most moving, are perhaps not among the most solid and useful.
I seem to hear the gentle reprimand of Jesus:
Parece-me ouvir a suave reprimenda de Jesus:
— Unless you see miracles...
— Vós, se não presenciaes milagres...
Now, were all those who asked Jesus for miracles Christians?
At Fátima there was much Catholic faith, agreed.
Em Fátima havia muita fé catholica, d'accordo.
But was there not also some of that love of the marvellous which paganism does not exclude?
There being in the Church so many mysteries worthy of our faith, absolute and sure, are not manifestations of faith in honour of those mysteries more moving than those in honour of phenomena whose significance has evidently not yet been established?
Were there 50 thousand Catholics at Fátima?
Estavam em Fátima 50 mil catholicos?
But what a pity not to see them inscribed in the subscription books of the Catholic newspapers!
Were there 50 thousand Catholics at Fátima?
Estavam em Fátima 50 mil catholicos?
But what a pity not to see them forming an impenetrable wall around their Prelates punished with exile!
Were there 50 thousand Catholics at Fátima?
Estavam em Fátima 50 mil catholicos?
But what a pity not to see them inscribed in the Catholic Centres; nor to find them at the ballot boxes, securing for the Church, persecuted and vilified by councils and boards of the impious, a position of dignity and victory!
