The newspaper "O Ouriense" publishes the letter of Father Manuel Marques Ferreira, parish priest of Fátima, to the editor of this newspaper.
We publish here this letter addressed to "O Ouriense", bearing in mind those which the same author wrote respectively to the editor of "O Mensageiro" (Cf. Doc. 12, of this volume), and to the editor of "A Ordem" (Cf. DCF, vol. 1, Doc. 40, p. 293-296)).
DCF, vol. 1, Doc. 40, p. 293-296)).
Between the three versions there is no essential difference, if one excludes the post scriptum in this letter sent to the "Ouriense". One notices in the parish priest a concern to adapt each letter to the publication for which it was intended. Thus, for example, when he writes for "O Ouriense", he adds "in this parish", alluding to a place known to the readers, and he tones down expressions that might offend the administrator.
As regards spelling, one notices that, while "O Mensageiro" keeps to the reform of 1911, "A Ordem" continues to archaise. The spelling of the text of "O Ouriense" was updated by Dr. José Galamba de Oliveira.
Most Excellent Mr Editor
Ex. mo Snr. Redactor
I come to request the high honour of publishing in a public space of the Ouriense the following: — To believers and non-believers.
With all the repugnance of the heart of a Catholic priest, I come to make plain and to assert before all who have learned or may come to learn of the rumour — all the more defaming and repellent for being dangerous to my life and my dignity as parish priest — that I was an accomplice in the abrupt snatching of the little children, who say they see Our Lady in this parish, from the authority of their parents and from the satisfaction desired by the 5 to 6 000 people (according to the cal-
culations) who, many from a distance of so many leagues and with enormous sacrifices, came to see them, to speak to them and to hear them speak — I say — I come to repel so unjust and insidious a calumny, crying out to the whole world that I took no part, however small, either directly or indirectly, in the odious and sacrilegious act.
The Administrator did not confide to me the secret of his intentions.
And if it was Providential — which it was — that the authority took the little children away furtively and without opportunity for resistance, no less Providential was the calming of the spirits excited by the diabolical rumour — otherwise this parish would today have to lament the death of its parish priest as an accomplice.
But this time again the snare of the devil did not succeed in dealing a mortal wound, certainly owing to the Virgin Mother.
The authority, after the long interrogation of the little children in their homes, had them brought to my house for the purpose of information; he says, so that they would disclose to him a secret which they had not yet revealed to him — whence, at a time he judged opportune, he had them get into the carriage and, telling the parents and bystanders that he was taking them to the place of the Apparitions, set off at full speed for Vila Nova de Ourém.
For what ends did he choose my house?
Escolheu a minha casa com que fins?
So that the people would rise up, as they rose up against me as an accomplice? For... some other end?
I do not know. — But all I know is that I decline all responsibility attaching to such a way of proceeding, and that God can always watch over His own.
No one can put obstacles in the way of the works of God.
The little children were not needed, say thousands of witnesses, for the Queen of the Angels5 to reveal her power; they themselves will attest the extraordinary events and phenomena which they witnessed and which further rooted their belief.
Now it is not the 3 children of 9 to 11 years of age, it is the thousands of people of all ages, classes and conditions, coming from the different parts of the country.
If my absence as parish priest from the place is felt by believers, no less would my presence be felt by unbelievers, to the detriment of the truth of the facts.
The Virgin Mother does not need the presence of the parish priest to show her goodness, and it is necessary that the enemies of religion should not be able to tarnish the brilliance of Her Benevolence by attributing the belief of the people to the presence or counsel of the parish priest, because faith is a gift of God and not of priests: — that is the true reason for my absence and apparent indifference in so sublime and marvellous a matter: — that is why I have not given my clear opinion to the thousand questions and letters that have been addressed to me.
The enemy does not sleep. He roars like the Lion.
O inimigo não dorme. Ruge como o Leão.
It was not the Apostles who were the first to announce the Resurrection of the Son of the Virgin.
I refrain from giving an account of the phenomena that occurred at the place of the Apparitions, because this letter is already long, for which I apologise, and because by now the press must certainly have echoed them.
Believe me, very grateful.
Creia-me muito agradecido.

P.S. — On the 15th the authority arrived with the children at my house, where their parents and many other people gathered, before whom he sought, with every courtesy, to explain his way of proceeding.
