ENCOURAGING NEWS

ANIMADORA NOVA

Since May the edifying rumour has been going round that at Fátima, near Torres Novas, it is granted to 3 poor and humble little children to behold, precisely on the 13th of each month, a supernatural vision.

This vision, with the appearance of a lady of extraordinary beauty, appears to them in the open country in the midst of a cloud, always at the same spot. It speaks to them, though the children say only that the Lady had asked the little boy of 3 to learn to say the rosary3*, and the two

little girls to say it for the fatherland and for their family, adding that on 13 October she will tell them what more she wants of them.

In times of great trial, such as the one we are passing through, the believing soul of peoples is more inclined to accept the supernatural, and perhaps God, in His infinite mercy, moved to compassion by so much longing and suffering resulting from the terrible struggles and moral confusions, no less desolating than the physical sufferings of the war, is pleased to consent to these manifestations which raise the soul above this sad world.

As long as the Church does not intervene with its unquestionable authority, we can assert nothing on a matter of such importance, but simply by way of a pious, consoling and good belief, we eagerly insert in the pages of our Magazine some extracts from a letter conscientiously written by one of our subscribers, a soul aflame with the love of God, who therefore weighs her words rigorously, well aware that the Lord is served only with the truth.

Identical impressions, not yet authenticated by holy Church, are conveyed to us by the great Catholic dailies of France concerning apparitions of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, of Our Lady, and of Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus, who, having said: “I will spend my heaven doing good on earth”, appears and guides soldiers of France by the serene light of her beneficent directions in the midst of the slaughters that terrify them.

Let us therefore pass to the promised transcription:

Passemos portanto á prometida transcripção:

“The place of the apparition, let us call it that, is in an open stretch of heath, almost without trees, where small oak shrubs predominate. There was already an immense crowd around the one on which the child says Our Lady alights, and many groups scattered over the whole of that nearest stretch of ground, but without the look of a country fair; one noticed a respectful silence, an admirable composure and calm, even among those who were eating their packed food or talking about the matter that had drawn them there. I do not exaggerate in saying that there were upwards of 4,000 people, and around the privileged spot the rosary was being said, hymns were being sung, etc.,

with moving devotion; a great deal of praying has been done at that place these last two months!...

Everyone was longing for the arrival of the children, but at the hour they usually appeared, a young man arrived on a bicycle saying that the administrator* of Ourem had taken them there! They would not believe it could be. Then I thought of asking F...5 to go and find out how much truth there was in it. She came back shortly afterwards confirming the news. The administrator, who had been at the children's parents' house since the morning, sent them, with the court officer he had brought with him, to the parish priest's house, where he subjected them to a new, insistent and lengthy interrogation. The children never retracted; however much they were intimidated, even the little boy of 66 said: “No, we are not afraid.” It is extraordinary, isn't it?!... They say they looked like three little lambs, and without crying or shouting they got into the carriage, very calm, when the administrator told them he was going to take them to the place himself! But as soon as he had them in the carriage he whipped up the horses and set off at full gallop with them towards Villa Nova d'Ourem, which was his aim...

Meanwhile, it seemed that nobody could tear themselves away from the heath; they had been there for hours and hours and were in no hurry to leave. I said to F...: “Now that we are here I should like to stay until two o'clock, which is after all solar noon*. Both she and C...'s8 family agreed, and we stayed sitting on some stones. Well, daughter, at two o'clock precisely by my watch there was a rapid fall in temperature, without wind, producing the sensation one has when there is an eclipse of the sun, and instantaneously, as if an electric current had put that whole multitude in communication, all the men took off their hats and men and women all kne-

lt, visibly and spontaneously moved. Why, what happened? I cannot tell you; many people, among them my maids, said they saw a lovely cloud right beside the sun which disappeared in moments. I saw nothing, but I felt a shiver and an extraordinary emotion, and there were few eyes that were not weeping or at least brimming with tears.

What was it that instantaneously caused this effect? Let us await the future. But what is certain is that nobody was expecting anything any more; they were disheartened and were beginning to move off, reluctantly, to leave the place when this happened, just as I describe it to you. I looked at the holm-oak shrub and saw it wrapped in that mist which they say has always been noticed, and I pointed it out to F... Was it dust raised by the movement of the people? Perhaps, but it occurred at no other point, and, I repeat, there was no wind; it was cool. A short while before, a little man with whom I was talking had said to me: "Look, madam, the heavenly bodies are looking just as they did a month ago today." The clouds were thinning and forming a sort of very light web, it is true, but nothing that was extraordinary; what was extraordinary was the sensation that was suddenly felt, and everyone felt it."

2 This letter probably dates from shortly after 13 August, since it says: “A great deal of praying has been done at that place these last two months!...”, that is, since June 1917. The author is a subscriber to the magazine. The addressee must also have been a lady, a close friend of the author, since she calls her “daughter”, without this form of address meaning that she was her daughter, because later she says: “many people, among them my maids”, an expression that would make no sense if the addressee were her daughter. There is a letter from Branca Falcão de Sommer to Elisa Tavares Bonacho dos Anjos Martins, dated Monte Estoril, 6 October 1917 (Doc. 40, of 6 October 1917): “I received the “Raio de Luz” as well as your kind letter [...]. There is no doubt that the description of Fatima needs no signature. Reading the article is the same as listening to our enthusiastic neighbour!”. Branca de Sommer and Elisa Martins were neighbours in Lisbon (they lived respectively in Praça do Príncipe Real and Praça das Flores), and also in the provinces (respectively at Quinta da Cardiga, parish and municipality of Golegã, and at Quinta da Várzea, Riachos, Torres Novas). Therefore the two women's “enthusiastic neighbour”, the author of the letter, might also have lived in Lisbon, but we put forward the more probable hypothesis that she was Maria de Jesus Xavier de Figueiredo de Mello de Oriol Pena Raposo, living at Quinta de Carvalhais, between Riachos and Torres Novas, and so very close to Quinta da Várzea and Quinta da Cardiga.
3 The reference is undoubtedly to Francisco, who was 8 years old on 13 May 1917, since he had been born on 11 June 1908 (cf. DCF, vol. 1, Doc. 1, of c.27 May 1917, note 7).
5 This is a female person, since further on it says: “ella”, “sentadas” and “fil-o notar á F...”. In our view, F. and further on C. are abbreviations of Fulana and Cicrana [So-and-so]. Or do they rather indicate the initials of first names?
6 There must be some confusion here: “The little boy of 6” would better refer to the “little girl” Jacinta, who, however, had already turned 7.
