Description of the document: The draft of the letter was made on the back of a sheet, now yellowed, of a Statistical Chart for the school year 1915 to 16 of the School District of Lousã, council of Penela, dated Rabaçal, 1 August 1916.

The original dimensions of the sheet would have been about 70 cm wide by 47 cm high. The sheet was folded towards the centre into four parts. The last quarter, on the right-hand side of the front (with the chart), was cut off. On the back (draft of the letter) the first quarter is entirely blank.

The text of the draft is written in two columns about 17cm wide each, the second reaching only a little past the middle.

The paper is badly torn, especially at the folds, which makes it difficult to read some words with certainty. However, when the draft was written the paper already had a rounded tear, because the text goes around it.

According to information from the person who supplied the document, the author of the letter is the schoolteacher Lalanda, which is corroborated by the name António Lalanda dos... mentioned on the chart, in the teachers' column, cut off on its right-hand side.

The original draft was lent for direct study by its owner, Dona Maria da Natividade Lalanda dos Santos, resident at Freixial do Campo (Castelo Branco), daughter of Prof. António Lalanda.

Several times I have taken up my pen to write to you in order to tell you that I was one of the fortunate ones who had the happiness of seeing the Miracle that Our Lady worked at the place of Fatima on the 13th of this month. But thinking that you will already have learned of it from other people and even from the newspapers, I have refrained from doing so until now. But as time goes by I feel a great desire to tell all who are dear to me what I saw. And so Your Exa will forgive me the

time I am going to steal from your many occupations in reading my poor account of what happened. It was as follows: Having heard various things told on the subject, and that on the 13th Our Lady would make everyone believe, this led me to go from here to the place by bicycle, spending the night before at Reguengo in the house of my sister S. José4. On the 13th, after breakfast5, I made my way to the place I refer to, which is some 2 leagues from Reguengo. I had barely left the house (9 o'clock, more or less) when the rain and wind began to treat me (and all who were following the same route) with such violence that we arrived at the place all wet. On the way I even took shelter in a house by the roadside to see whether the rain would stop, but after 2 hours of waiting there was no other remedy but to go on under rain and wind. Along the way one saw nothing but people on foot, on horseback, in carriages, motor cars, bicycles, etc., a greater crowd [than] on the days of the pilgrimage of Our Lady of Mercoles8. When we arrived at the place there were thousands of people there already for the same purpose, the gathering of people, carriages, etc., making a dazzling effect.

I made my way to the spot where a small arch stood and where I learned that it was there that on other occasions Our Lady had deigned to appear [to] [2] 3 little shepherd children. It was said that the children had stated that the Miracle would take place between noon and 1 o'clock solar time.

The rain did not11 stop, and the completely overcast sky led one to think that nothing would happen.

is still falling. They go to the spot and ask those present to close their umbrellas, in which they are obeyed at once, and14 what is more, all the men took the hats off their heads. They began the rosary (5 decades) and the rain slowly stops falling. The very dense clouds begin to thin out and the Sun, between one cloud and another, begins to be seen as if it were the moon. Some time later the clouds draw apart and the Sun shows itself in all its splendour. I wanted to stare at it but could not. The clouds go on hiding it and moments later they draw apart again and the Sun shows us the grandest picture my eyes have ever seen. Taking on the appearance of the moon, all yellow but without giving off l[i]ght, it changes colour to a sky blue, then takes on [a] very intense brilliance like a fountain of brilliant lights [of], takes on a very rapid circular movement and approaches the Earth, coming to give us the impression that everything is going to be struck down. But oh! Divine marvel! The Sun takes up its place again and seems to tell us: do not be afraid! Everyone, now on their knees, turns their thoughts to God, to Our Lady, and no one remembers this world.

The exclamations Miracles! Mother of Heaven! Our Lady are general, and the Sun, as if to show the unbelievers clearly that what they see is not an illusion, again takes on the aspect of the moon, the sky-blue colour, the same brilliance and circular movement , mov-[3]ing away from the Earth, which leads us to suppose that22 it is some 500 or 600 metres from us.

As exclamações Milagres! Mãe do Ceu!

Meanwhile the Miracle ends and the children rise from prayer and, carried in the arms of various individuals, the eldest says to the People: Our Lady, who spoke with me for the last time, charges me to tell

you: that Peace is made today; that you should go home untroubled, for the rain will not wet you on the way back; that you should pray to Our Lord, whom you have offended much, and that soon the soldiers will come from France, and that she wishes a chapel to be built for her at the place.

During the Miracle objects took on a golden yellow colour, the vast enclosure where upwards of 50 thousand people were gathered making a dazzling effect.

Within the luminous globe a group of persons could be observed moving, which the child says was St Joseph announcing Peace to men; His blessed Son giving him the blessing, and Our Lady of Sorrows.

The scene is moving and touching! Tears of emotion and joy are seen in almost every eye, and from mine some fell too.

A grand picture such as my eyes had never seen! During the Miracle everything takes on a yellowish colour, a golden yellow, remaining in this state [the .....ows ...[dur]ing some 30 .....[after]wards it end[ed].30

The children rise from prayer and the eldest, carried in the arms of an individual, says to the People: that Our Lady spoke to her for the last time and told her that Peace was being made today; that they should pray and go home untroubled, for the rain would not wet them on the way back; that they should expect our soldiers, who would soon come from France; that she was Our Lady of the Rosary and that she wished a chapel to be erected for her at that spot 31

However, with the letters that remained visible after the tear, and with an approximate calculation of the letters and spaces, we present two possible readings: "the shadows at least for some 30 minutes and then it ended"; "the shadows for approximately some 30 minutes and then it ended".
