Helio de Lysia2 publishes a pamphlet on the miracle of Fátima.

One of the copies of this publication that we possess is annotated by Fr. Sebastião Martins dos Reis, with the spelling updated. Fr. Martins dos Reis republished this booklet in his work O Milagre do Sol e o Segredo de Fátima (1966), justifying it as follows: “Because it incorporates and illustrates, both from the informative point of view and on the subject discussed, everything that has been said so far, I could not resist inserting here, as a complement or immediate supplement, with its spelling updated, the precious bibliographical rarity that is the MILAGRE DE FÁTIMA, brought to light by Hélio de Lísia straight away, in the first fortnight of November 1917. Even more than the useful presence of the most unfortunate, scandalously opportunistic article by Dr. Domingos Pinto Coelho, the masterly article by António Sardinha, O Milagre de Fátima, in A Monarquia of 8 November 1917, would by itself suffice to justify the new publication of the booklet. The lucid thinker and fiery doctrinaire of Integralismo Lusitano is at his best, pulverising, with unerring and unanswerable logic, the presumptions and pretensions of the apish scientism of the idols and bonzes who held forth in the public square. It is only to be regretted that it has not been possible to compare the perhaps defective present reproduction with the original text...” (p. 63).

Mr Pinharanda Gomes supplied us with a photocopy of a page of the book O Occultismo e a guerra, on which the following can be read: “To Frazão de Vasconcelos as a tribute of esteem and admiration, ofte Helio de Lysia (Ed. Metzner) Lx. -IV-918”.

Metzner) Lx. -IV-918”.

[P. 3]THEORY OF THE MIRACLE

[P. 3]TEORIA DO MILAGRE

A miracle is any phenomenon which, while making an extraordinary impression on our senses, at the same time infringes the laws of nature. That is, more or less, how it is defined in the canonical books.

We do not dispute it.

Não discutimos.

Dogma is inviolable. It is impenetrable to our intelligence and, as a great poet said, if

the horizon is infinite, the human gaze is narrow, (1)5

let us remain in the insignificance of wretched inhabitants of this sublunary globe, gazing at the mystery as a peasant gazes at an algebraic equation.

In our own day, highly disturbing events have occurred which have thrown the scientific field into revolution and alarmed the scholars who cling to materialist theories.

Magnetism, spiritism, cases of telepathy, dreams, apparitions, prophecies, etc., cast flashes of astonishment into the minds of modern scientists.

What can this be? What: is the threshold of Eleusis still inaccessible to the profane, has the veil of Isis not yet been rent from top to bottom, revealing the acrosophic secrets of nature?

Does the miracle exist — as the Catholics affirm? Does it not exist — as the negativists of almost every philosophical school assert?

Is the miracle an infringement of the natural laws, or is it we who are ignorant of them, and is the miracle therefore absolutely determined by fixed, immutable and eternal laws, like that of gravity or universal gravitation?

If man — the microcosm — does not know himself, how does he dare to try to fathom the secrets of the Cosmos and of the Macrocosm? Why is it that, without answering the challenge of the motto inscribed on the portico at Delphi, he aspires, like daring Icarus, to soar up to higher spheres where human intelligence loses itself?

Apparition of Our Lady of La Salette (Isère)

Aparição de N. Senhora de La Salette (Isére)

19 September 1846.

19 de Setembro de 1846.

On the eve of the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, two children who were minding a flock — Melania, aged fourteen, and Maximino, aged eleven — suddenly saw, at about noon, a lady surrounded by a resplendent aureole.

The extraordinary apparition was a most beautiful woman, radiating flashes of light.

She was weeping...

Chorava...

Her luminous tears, falling to the ground, instead of wetting it, vanished like streaks of fire, like swift sparks.

Her brow, wrapped in a luminous circle, shone crowned with roses.

She wore an apron of gold over a dress embroidered with pearls.

This radiant apparition cast no shadow at all on the ground.

She spoke to the little shepherds, announcing to them that she was the Virgin.

There are, in this case, three points to distinguish:

Ha, neste caso, três pontos a descriminar:

1st The manifestation, which in itself already contains a meaning;

1º A manifestação que, por si propria, encerra já um sentido;

2nd The reproaches she uttered concerning the moral decadence of the century;

2º As censuras que proferiu, relativamente á decadencia moral do seculo;

3rd The secret of La Salette.

3º O segredo da Salette.

Our Lady had made the children understand the gravity of this secret so well that, for a certain time, serious difficulties arose over its revelation, not excluding the Roman pontiff, Pius IX, who expressed himself on the matter thus:

France is threatened with imminent scourges. She, however, is not the only guilty one: Germany, Italy, the whole of Europe are guilty and deserve punishment.

.....

.....

And, after various considerations, he concluded:

E, depois de varias considerações, terminava:

God will grant peace to the world; the good will have the reward of their efforts; the great white flag will float over the whole world.

A new apparition of the Virgin to a little shepherd.

Nova aparição da Virgem a um pastorinho.

The seer observed a lady approaching him, dressed in a glittering robe and wearing on her brow a crown of gold more dazzling than sunlight.

Tears, like glowing pearls, slid down her cheeks.

As lágrimas, como pérolas rutilas, deslizaram-lhe pelas faces.

On reaching the shepherd boy, she said to him: "I cannot avert the great scourges with which the Lord is about to strike humanity... The only remedy is to do penance immediately in order to escape the wrath of God... If they do not do so, death will strike them terribly by means of a war of extermination between the peoples.

Apparition of the Virgin of Lourdes

Aparição da Virgem de Lourdes

From February to July 1858.

De Fevereiro a Julho de 1858.

Bernadette Soubirous, a young girl of 14, the daughter of a miller, went to a wood near the house where she lived to gather dry firewood when, suddenly, at the hour of noon, she beheld a magnificent apparition that dazzled her.

— Before her, standing, a lady clothed in light, of indescribable beauty...

A fortnight later an enormous crowd flocked to the place, watching Bernadette in ecstasy.

This moving spectacle produced resounding effects; and, among various known cases, the conversion of a civil servant who was an atheist is worth recording.

— The radiant apparition repeated these words to Bernadette:

— A aparição radiosa repetiu a Bernadette esta palavras:

“Penance! Penance! Penance!”

“Penitencia! Penitencia! Penitencia!”

The next day, in the grotto, hitherto parched and today famous, a spring was born — at first a trickle of water that kept on swelling, turning into a miraculous stream.

A most curious coincidence: on the day the water gushed from the rock of Lourdes, the Church was reciting precisely the following words:

... The Waters sensed his coming and trembled.

... As Aguas presentiram a sua vinda e estremeceram.

[p.7] O Milagre de Fátima

One of the most sensational cases to have impressed the mind of the multitudes is this extraordinary event which, on 13 October last, brought together at the place of Fátima upwards of fifty thousand souls, according to the newspapers.

The story is simple.

A historia é simples.

Three shepherd children, a boy and two girls, relate that, from 13 May of the current year, a Lady of dazzling beauty appeared to them, this phenomenon coinciding with some signs in the sky, mainly in the photosphere of the sun.

Before, however, we put forward our modest opinion on so singular an event, it is necessary to read the testi-

monies of some journalists, eyewitnesses of the fact, giving first place to Dr. Domingos Pinto Coelho, who in A Ordem (Year II.— No. 507 — Tuesday 16 October 1917) gives the following impartial description of the Fátima case:

“The Catholic Church has constantly shown itself extremely demanding in assessing the proofs before it consents to establish the miraculous character of any fact or series of facts”.

“At Lourdes, for example, Bernadette's ecstasies were clearly visible on her face; the complete sincerity of the little shepherdess was patent, her account of the apparitions was remarkable for its clarity and consistency, the appearance of the spring was a palpable fact, several extraordinary cures seemed to confirm the virtue of the water, Dr. Dozous, an unbelieving physician (the reader will forgive us if we have the name wrong), had verified the phenomenon of a candle flame burning for some minutes in contact with one of the seer's hands without affecting the skin — and the Church remained silent and reserved”.

“So silent and reserved, and recommending so much reserve to its ministers, that it was even criticised by some of the more fiery Catholics”.

“The Church consented to depart from this attitude only [p. 8] when — without haste — its many inquiries closed with this conclusion: the natural laws are absolutely insufficient to explain many of the facts that occurred: their supernatural character therefore rigorously imposes itself”.

“At Fátima, what is there? What has there been?”

“Em Fátima que ha? Que tem havido?”

“Three little shepherds (a boy and two girls) say that a Lady of extreme beauty appears to them. The visions have occurred on the 13th of each month since May”.

“The children are uncouth and not very talkative. Before the visions, real or alleged, they answer questions with great difficulty. Immediately afterwards they speak with much more firmness and ease, and trustworthy persons who heard them on the 13th last say that they affirmed that on that day there had once again appeared to them

Our Lady, recommending the faithful to do penance and pray a great deal and to build her a modest chapel at the place of the apparitions, promising peace soon and the return of the Portuguese soldiers”.

“Coinciding with the apparitions and as if to corroborate them, those who have been at the place on the 13th of the past months say that extraordinary signs have appeared in the sky and above all in the sun”.

“As to what occurred in this last respect on the recent 13th, a Saturday, we can testify, because we were there, not as a pilgrim, be it well noted, but as an onlooker”.

“From 11 until half past one the rain was constant and driven by a strong wind; frankly harsh and unpleasant weather, which the enormous crowd of many thousands of people bore in excellent humour, with no shelter other than umbrellas and vehicles — for not a single building is to be seen in the vicinity”.

“One thirty-seven and a half — solar noon — was the announced hour of the vision, with which the phenomena in the sky were expected to coincide”.

“At that hour it was still raining”.

“A essa hora continuava chovendo”.

“Minutes later the rain lessened, and at a quarter to two it stopped completely”.

“The sun, until then hidden, showed itself between clouds that were moving at a certain speed. And as their density varied, the veil they cast over the king of stars was more or less diaphanous”.

“Like that whole crowd, we then looked at the sun with sustained attention and, through the clouds, we saw it with new aspects: new to us, be it well noted”.

[p. 9] “Sometimes surrounded by blood-red flames, at other times haloed in pale yellow or purple, at other times seeming animated by a very rapid rotating movement, at other times still appearing to detach itself from the sky, to approach the earth and to radiate a strong heat...”

“Why deny it? These phenomena, which we had never seen, impressed us strongly. A collective psychology establishes itself in crowds. And, generally speaking, a great wave of faith swept over that crowd, which was deeply moving”.

“One doubt remained with us, however”.

“Uma duvida nos restava, porém”.

“Was what we had seen in the sun something exceptional? Or would it be reproduced in similar circumstances?”

“O que viramos no sol é cousa excepcional? Ou reproduzir-se--hia em circumstancias analogas?”

“Now precisely this similarity of circumstances presented itself to us yesterday. We were able to see the sun half veiled by clouds, as on Saturday. And sincerely: — we saw the same successions of colours, the same rotating movement, etc”.

“(In parenthesis, it is our duty to warn the reader not to repeat the experiment: a doctor tells us that under the excessively strong light of the sun the pupils contract in such a way that sometimes they do not dilate again. And then... let us say no more of so great a horror!)”.

“With the only extraordinary fact eliminated, then, what remains?”

“Eliminado, pois, o unico facto extraordinario, que fica?”

“For now, the statements of three children and nothing more.”

“That is very little”.

“É muito pouco”.

“Are the children sincere? We have no reason to doubt it; rather, their rusticity is a guarantee to us.”

“Serão as creanças sinceras?

“As for the grim stories of exploiters of popular credulity who are supposed to have influenced the little shepherds by suggestion for mysterious ends of gain, we beg leave not to believe them without proof. Do the strong minds wish us not to believe without proof? Very well. But with equal right we would demand of those who see Jesuit misdeeds in everything those very proofs which they ask so much of us, but which they so easily dispense with for the use of their slander”.

“In short, we came back from Fátima in the same state of mind in which we had gone there — in doubt”.

“Is there a miracle, are there apparitions? It is possible”.

“Ha milagre, ha aparições? É possivel”.

“But between possibility and reality lies an abyss”.

“Let us continue, then, in expectation, benevolent if you like, but nothing more”.

“And may we be permitted to advise persons who by [p.10] their position and intelligence can influence those around them not to exceed that limit”.

“We understand very well, because we share it, their vehement desire that it should be confirmed that the Most Holy Virgin, our Patroness and Mother of the children of this Land of Holy Mary, had once again looked upon it with predilection. But... no

imprudence. Let us not give grounds for saying that we believe in miraculous facts without basis".

d'imprudencias.

"That is not what the Church commands us".

"In a matter of such consequence, let us be children of prompt and complete obedience".

Having read the excerpt, which we have transcribed with due acknowledgement, the floor goes to the learned priest Rev. Fr. Vacondeus, who expresses himself thus in finis of an article published in the Boletim Parochial (no. 191 — 4 November 1917).

.....

.....

"The fact concerning the sun not being extraordinary, we are left with the testimony of three children. It seems that from detailed inquiries carried out there emerges such restraint and truthfulness that it has impressed lofty minds. Nevertheless, despite all that has been said and written on this interesting subject, we must remain in benevolent expectation, awaiting events and the study of the facts, with prudent reserve. We must neither deny the responsibility of miracles, nor believe, without important proofs and without the judgement of the Church, everything that is said."

"It is the Church herself that in these cases commands us to be most cautious. Let us wait, then, and trust that if there is a divine work at Fatima, the Lord will confirm it in some way."

Having set out the above considerations, owed to the pens of Catholic journalists, we feel tempted, for the greater enlightenment of the public, to transcribe some passages from a reportage article (2)11 published in the Ilustração Portuguesa (II series — No. 610, Lisbon, 29 October 1917): [p.11] "What did I hear that took me to Fátima? That the Virgin Mary, after the feast of the Ascension, had appeared to three children who were grazing livestock, two little girls and a young shepherd boy, recommending them to pray and promising to ap-

pear to them there, above a holm oak, on the 13th of each month, until in October she would give them some sign of the power of God and make revelations. The news spread for many leagues around; it flew from place to place to the far corners of Portugal, and the pilgrimage of believers grew from month to month, to the point that on 13 October some fifty thousand people gathered on the heath of Fátima, according to the calculations of dispassionate individuals. At the previous gatherings of the faithful, there was no lack of people who supposed they had seen astronomical and atmospheric singularities that were taken as an indication of immediate divine intervention. Some spoke of sudden drops in temperature, of stars twinkling in broad noonday and of lovely clouds, never seen before, around the sun. Some repeated and spread, with emotion, that the Lady recommended penance, that she wanted a chapel built at that place, that on 13 October she would manifest, by means of a proof perceptible to all, the infinite goodness and omnipotence of God...

"Thus it was that, on the famous and long-awaited day, thousands upon thousands of people flocked to Fátima from near and far, braving all the obstacles and hardships of travel, some trudging leagues in sun and rain, others conveyed in the most varied vehicles, from the almost prehistoric to the most recent and marvellous models of motor car, and many more who endured the discomforts of the third-class carriages of the trains, in which, to cover what are today relatively short distances, long hours and even days and nights are lost! I saw groups of men and women, patiently, as if rapt in a dream, making their way on the eve towards the famous spot, singing sacred hymns and walking barefoot to their rhythm and to the cadenced recitation of the rosary (5 decades), without being troubled, deterred or driven to despair by the almost sudden change in the weather, when the downpours turned the dusty roads into deep mires and the mildness of autumn gave way, for a day, to the harshest rigours of winter... I saw the crowd, now pressed around the little tree of the miracle and stripping it of its branches to keep them as relics, now spread out over the vast heath which the road from

I saw that discouragement did not invade souls, that confidence remained alive and ardent despite the unexpected setbacks, that the composure of the crowd, in which country folk were in great abundance, was perfect, and that the children, privileged in their own estimation, were received with demonstrations of the most intense affection by that people, who knelt, uncovered their heads and prayed at their bidding as the hour of the "miracle" approached, the hour of the "perceptible sign", the mystic and longed-for hour of contact between heaven and earth..."

"And, when I no longer imagined that I would see anything more impressive than that noisy but peaceful crowd, animated by the same obsessive idea and moved by the same powerful yearning, what did I still see that was truly strange on the heath of Fátima? The rain, at the foretold hour, stop falling; the dense mass of clouds break apart, and the king of stars — a disc of dull silver — appear at full zenith and begin dancing in a violent and convulsive dance, which a great number of people imagined to be a serpentine dance, so beautiful and glittering were the colours that successively covered the surface of the sun..."

"A miracle, as the people cried; a natural phenomenon, as scholars say? I am not concerned now to know, but only to assure you of what I saw... The rest is a matter for Science and for the Church..."

Science has the floor.

Tem a palavra a Ciencia.

Let Religion speak.

Fale a Religião.

But, precisely at the moment we are writing these lines, a friend draws our attention to an editorial in A Monarquia (year I — No. 223 — Lisbon, 8 November 1917), an article by Dr. Antonio Sardinha, one of the most brilliant talents of the modern generation, who, in the light of Faith and Science, explains the astounding case of Fátima.

"Reason and good sense are not enough!" — old Renan used to say,

"Raison et bon sens ne suffisent pas!" — já dizia o velho Renan,

kneeling on the steps of the Acropolis. Because reason and good sense are not enough, there is in the life of man, in his inner activity, beyond the [p.13] immediate world of the senses, another vast and murmuring world, in which he sinks the deepest and most mysterious roots of his personality and with which it is not through the intelligence that he can best communicate. Modern philosophy, reducing the intelligence to a mere faculty of comprehension, gives us, beside it and with a greater reach, another sure agent of knowledge. I refer to intuition, which psychology has found itself obliged to admit as a scientific process of proof, and it is by its doing that the inert and sterile rationalism of the last century no longer withstands the criticisms of a William James and a Henri Bergson."

"The recent case of Fatima, startling the official mentality of the regime, while the legitimate ecclesiastical authorities have not examined and judged it in its religious significance, matters to us as the starting point of a question, whose formula will be this: — whether in the face of science, and outside all theological influence, the Miracle is an acceptable and possible fact. Let us not, then, have recourse to those arguments of a supernatural order which, as believers in the omnipotence of a Creator-God, at once present us with the full possibility of the Miracle. Let us rather look at the problem from another aspect — from the positive and concrete aspect of everyday realities, proceeding in a homely way from the simple observation of events to the hidden force that must determine them."

"Only in Portugal does materialism still predominate in minds that a half-baked intellectual veneer leads to presume themselves cultured. People here still believe in the continuity of Matter, accepting as a dogma the old static conception of the universe, governed by I know not what inflexible and automatic laws, prior to any and every impelling, and as such conscious, cause."

"Hence a certain professional atheism, granting the title of free spirit to anyone who apishly declaims it as the last word of science. In this way an irreducibility is sought to be established between science and religion which does not exist at bottom. Science and religion do not exclude each other, because their ends are different, just as the phenomena on which they act are different by nature. Pragmatism, delimiting and defining the reach of reason,

came to rehabilitate the reasons of Pascal, which are the so-called reasons of the heart. Just as there is an intellectual order in the things of life, there is also an affective order, to which intuition corresponds as a means of experience scientifically; the intelligence then intervenes, not to [p.14] resolve by itself alone the questions that intuition embraces in its wider orbit, but to proclaim them and verify them as recognised truths.”

“The fundamental error of rationalism is based, then, on the pride of the intelligence, which denies systematically whenever it cannot explain.”

“The lofty manifestations of mysticism thereby entered the chapter of implausible fantasies, when they were not conveniently classified as authentic pathological products. Today the course of thought is different. The intelligence, restricted solely to the appreciation of the material world, on which it acts through the senses, is constrained to admit the demand15 of other realities, which, though not tangible, are nonetheless more than perceptible. Ours is an age of scientific revision. And, as for the nature of science itself, we must conclude with Brunetière that it is in no way a solution for life. If the physical world is capable of becoming its domain, the moral world escapes it entirely. Now it is precisely in the psychic world that religion acts as mistress of the vast fields of conscience.”

É outro hoje o rumo do pensamento.

“That is what contemporary philosophy stresses as its chief commandment. Since the intuitionist method was raised up with such nobility by scholars like Henri Poincaré, what do we see but science, changed from an omnipotent goddess into a modest hypothesis which experience takes it upon itself to confirm? The very foundations on which established science rests are seriously affected by contemporary revisionism. Geometry, for example. Resting on the Eclidean notion of three dimensions, Poincaré denounces it as deficient, if not untenable, since science today already finds itself obliged to work with another dimension — time, which is indeed the “fourth dimension” of the occultists and which the intelligence, because it cannot solidify it, has no right on that ground alone

to contest. What happens with geometry happens with the notion of matter, held to be indestructible and eternal. Contrary to the scientific simplism of the century just ended, Gustave le Bon demonstrates to us the appearance and the death of matter. Matter decomposes, disintegrates, is pulverised and is extinguished, in formal contradiction of the famous law of Lavoisier, according to which in nature nothing is created, nothing is lost and everything is transformed.”

“The dissociation of matter having been established, Gustave Le Bon thus teaches us that its primordial parts are generated [p.15] by a sort of condensation of energy. With energy preceding matter, the whole static conception of the universe is blown away. So let us not be surprised that Reinke, a German naturalist, presented living organisms as governed by a double category of forces: — material forces obeying the laws of general energetics, and intelligent spiritual forces which Reinke calls “dominants”. Thus, scientifically, materialism is in every way a “biological absurdity”, as the Docteur X\\\ calls it with vigorous precision in his most remarkable book “Les conflits de la science et les idées modernes*”.

A energia, antecedendo a materia, é toda a conceção estatica do universo desfeita no ar.

“In a machine there is not only a set of parts — writes Dastre, now deceased; behind it there is the purpose its inventor assigned to it in arranging them in a given direction. The energies expended in its operation are governed by the end it sets itself, that is, by the dominants issuing from the intelligence of the builder.” The same, and with a hundredfold more reason, happens with life. It ceases to be regarded from the static point of view, and, in the conditions of its genesis, which are continually being reproduced, it is regarded through an understanding that satisfies and serves us only from the dynamic point of view, in harmony with the most recent conclusions of science. Energy preceding matter, condensing to give it unity and consistency — what is this but the affirmation of the first force, conscious and omnipotent, which already existed at the beginning of all things?

Submitting to the admirable discipline of facts, William James, physiologist and philosopher, confessed that through communion with the ideal a new energy enters the world and gives rise to new phenomena. “It is the principle of the Credo formulated in other words”—,

the abbé Courmont of Sens de la mort observed to the surgeon Marsal. And, indeed, the sciences of observation point us to energy presiding over the appearance of life, which is maintained and endures by it; psychology, instituting the “third experience” or “religious experience”, recognises through the mouth of one of the most sincere scholars of our time the transformation of the ordinary conditions of life by the doing of a new energy that enters the world and comes to our aid whenever we put ourselves in communion with that mystic force which is God”, — the supreme ideal. Thus we have in one case the Creation, in the other the Incarnation. I believe in the true God, maker of heaven and earth... and in the true Lord Jesus Christ, through whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven.

The astounding testimony of tomorrow will be that of science taking refuge in the shadow of the sanctuary and confessing its entire subordination to revealed truth. Already René Quinton's theories on the marine origin of life have filled with an invincible topicality the passage of the Bible which shows us, on the eve of Creation, the spirit of God borne upon the waters. On the other hand, Professor Benedikt of Vienna clearly asserts that the order of appearance of living beings as Genesis sketches it for us is the one that best fits the lessons of true science, of the science that does not regard itself as an end but solely as a means. No one thinks by this to reconcile Faith with science. It is science that bows before Faith, and before long it will adore her as the sovereign mistress of our poor momentary existence.

The proof of the profound change taking place in this respect in the contemporary mind lies in the discussion held on 28 December 1911 at the French Society of Philosophy. The proposed theme was the Miracle, which, affirmed by believers such as Le Roy and Maurice Blondel, was very far from being regarded by unbelievers as a childish and crude absurdity. In his inquiry, famous today, Agathon already declared, according to the unimpeachable testimony of Georges Sorel, that of all the scholars of our time the

maticians were those who accepted Catholic dogma most readily!

“When one questions an algebraist, he generally answers us that the miracle offers nothing strange, because the miracle involves the intervention of unknown data”.

“We need nothing more to show how far materialism has reached its decline, being no more than the patrimony of half a dozen semi-illiterates in whom inferiority of reasoning passes itself off as superiority of mind. It is again to William James that we owe the rehabilitation of the Saints within the purely psychological criterion, against the false scientific concept that considered them mere types of hospital phenomenology. The school of Charcot is reduced to the most deplorable of inadequacies by incorporating mystical ecstasy into the very vast flora of nervous defects. The tree must be judged by its fruits. Whereas “nervous defects weaken and diminish the soul, ecstasy, on the contrary, makes it more vigorous, strengthens it and enno-[p.17]-bles it”. The mystical experience of the saints leads them to joy, whereas the mysticism of madmen is sad and annihilating. “The one exalts, the other depresses.” There is therefore no possibility whatsoever of confusion. For his part, in the Traité de pathologie mentale Ballet teaches us that religious faith in all its forms is a cause of moral tranquillity.

“Many years have already gone by since Myers, without confessional intentions, purely from the experimental side, concluded resoundingly in favour of the survival of the human personality after the disintegration of death. In parallel, those principles on which science had rested for centuries are bursting like soap bubbles.”

“Thus Sobatchewski and Riemann, creating a geometry outside the foundations of Euclid, convince us that the theorem that gives us the sum of the angles of a triangle as equal to two right angles is not true. It is less for Sobatchewski and greater for Riemann. Rightly did Poincaré write that everything was hypothesis and that science rested on nothing but a network of conventions.”

“For if science — science as an end, science that seeks to

inquire into first causes and indulges in romantic explanations of the Universe — is no more than an edifice raised on mere conventions, the same is not true of the miracles of Lourdes, which are our daily bread. It is not merely a matter of more or less complicated cases of hysteria, caused by an alteration of the nerve centres. Dr. Boissarie tells us of the instantaneous healing of bone fistulas in a patient's face. Dr. Le Bec, chief surgeon of a Paris hospital, verified the healing of a case of caries in the heel (calcaneum) and of an abscess revealing vertebral tuberculosis. Three Belgian doctors, Hoestenberghe, Royer and Deschamps, report to us the rapid knitting of an old fracture of the leg, accompanied by painful sores. The miracle exists, full and undeniable. It does indeed involve the intervention of data that are neither known nor foreseen.”

“In the present state of its mentality, the apparitions of Fatima must thus be taken as a supra-sensible reality, in no way contestable by the scientific spirit itself. Honest science even finds itself obliged to justify the resplendent aureole of the saints, ever since the discovery of the rays revealed to us a luminous energy emanating from the brain, its radiation becoming [p.18] stronger the more intense the work of the brain. If the work of the brain is thus materialised in rays, why should mystical elevation, held by William James to be the highest point of moral life, not manifest itself in a still more intense and more lasting luminosity? Let us laugh at those who, in the name of a false naturalism, rise up against the Miracle as such and seek to put the truly prodigious events of Fatima on a level with the outburst of a base superstition that cannot withstand the slightest examination.”

“It is for the ecclesiastical authorities to institute the respective process. The feeling of presence is a powerful sign of divine affirmation. It was experienced with admirable uniformity by all who saw the sun grow pale before her who came like “the rising Dawn, more formidable than a well-ordered army”.

“Cumpre ás autoridades eclesiasticas instaurarem o respectivo processo.

“I was not at Fatima, but from afar I believe in the Virgin's assistance to the poor land of Portugal. Before the Church defined it as

dogma, were we not among the first to adore her in the Mystery of Her Immaculate Conception? My belief is founded on the considered voice of my conscience. As lamentable as the unbelief that blinds is the doubt that scandalises it. The visible is no more than the very limited expression of the indivisible. Beyond the immediate world of the senses there is a world, wider and more unfathomable, which the intelligence barely divines and whose secret only Faith hands over to us. As in the epitaph of the physician of Padua, science, from mistress turned slave, teaches us only not to be ignorant of our ignorance. Therefore, for the edification of the unbelieving and the cautious, if humility of mind is the open road to God, let us repeat with old Renan, kneeling on the steps of the Acropolis, that “reason and good sense are not enough”.

What, then, must we conclude, after the edifying reading of such interesting documents?

Is the miracle of Fátima a mystification, or did the facts take place as the eyewitnesses describe them?

There are some points here that deserve attention:

Ha aqui alguns pontos que merecem reparo:

- 1st The apparition of the Virgin;
- 2nd The signs in the sky.

- 1.º A aparição da Virgem;
- 2.º Os sinais no céu.

As to the first point, many Catholics find it repugnant to admit the truth of the fact on such deficient proofs.

Quanto ao primeiro ponto, repugna admitir a muitos católicos, com tão deficientes provas, a veracidade do facto.

They doubt.

Duvidam.

For many, perhaps not the majority, there was no miracle. There are, however, those who fervently believe in its existence, those who reserve judgement pending a critical verdict, and those who deny it.

But it was always so.

Mas foi sempre assim.

A historical fact witnessed by some individuals and then transmitted to others, even though its authenticity be flagrant, gives rise at least to the following contradictory opinions, based respectively on doubt, on reserve, on belief or on denial.

Were the children the victims of an illusion, of a hallucination, or were they skilfully coached for that purpose?

Who will enlighten us?

Quem nos elucidará?

But the signs in the sky?

The work of suggestion, a case of collective suggestion, as many psychologists would have it, or merely a physical phenomenon?

The faith of many individuals gathered together is contagious.

A fé de muitos indivíduos reunidos é contagiosa.

Believers, praying in ecstasy — and this case occurs in all religions — create these phantoms in their field of vision, and this phenomenon, which begins with one individual, spreads to hundreds and even millions of them, as has been proved. History is full of examples of this kind.

An idea or any obsession is transmitted by induction, along mysterious conductors, psychological currents through [p.20] the astral, from individual to individual and from one to a multitude.

The great events which almost always resulted in cataclysms for humanity generally have their origin in the principle I have just set out.

It was one man, Peter — the Hermit — who, with the cry of God wills it, led the crusaders to Palestine, moving almost the whole of the Christian Europe of his time in an effervescent outpouring of faith. At present, the great European conflict, planned and unleashed by Germany, is also the result of the suggestion exercised over several decades by groups of individuals revolving around intellectual pivots such as Kant, Nietzsche and other philosophers, apologists of force and struggle, who saw, in a delirium of mystical madness, the realisation of German hegemony over the globe. In modern times, in the last years of the past century, Von Bernardi, Treistcke, Lasson, Lemprecht and other pamphleteers worked by suggestion on the mind of the German people, preparing them for a war in which they believe they will be victorious.

These illusions resulting from suggestion belong to a single psychological family.

There are so many cases like this in history!..

Ha tantos casos como este na história!..

And now, after reading the testimonies we have transcribed, it remains for us to learn what the learned occultists will say on the subject.

They, more than anyone, are qualified to explain this extraordinary phenomenon which has so impressed the popular mind in our country.
