Dia de S. Francisco Xavier Ex.mo Snr.
Forgive me, Your Exa, the delay in answering the question put by Your Exa in a letter addressed to my wife, about the extraordinary events of Fátima, in the part relating to the sun, around the hour of noon.
They were as follows: 1st The phenomena lasted some 8 to 10 minutes; 2nd The sun lost its dazzling brightness, taking on the appearance of the moon, and could be looked at easily, 3rd The sun three times, during that period of time, showed a rotating movement at its periphery, throwing off sparks of light at its edges, like what [1v] happens with the well-known firework wheels, of fire, 4th This rotating movement of the edges of the sun, 3 times mani-
fested and 3 times interrupted, was rapid and lasted 8 or 10 minutes, more or less; 5th Next, the sun took on a violet colour and then an orange one, spreading these colours over the earth, finally regaining its brightness and brilliance, impossible to look at with the eye. 6th It was a little after noon and near the zenith, (which is most important) that these events took place.
I ask Your Exa the favour of telling me whether you confirm this account.
The Bishop of Portalegre and Sra D. Maria de Jesus Raposo report that, being with other people in Torres [2] Novas, on the 20th of October last, at about \_\_\_\_? o'clock in the day, they saw the rotating movement of the sun and change of colours.
The same Lady says that these manifestations of the sun were very different from those of Fátima and did not have the importance of the 13th of October last.
It is urgent to know what the differences are, since she witnessed both. I wish for clarification about the differences.
É urgente saber quaes as differenças, pois que ella assistiu a ambas. Desejo esclarecimentos sobre as differenças.
The sun is incomparably larger than the earth, and has a slow rotating movement of its own, which is not performed in a few moments or minutes [2v] three times over.
In answer to Your Exa I will say that I do not consider the phenomena seen and observed in the sun to be astronomical phenomena of the sun properly speaking, but rather meteorological phenomena of the earth's atmosphere acting upon the solar image, as regards the colour and the moon-like appearance of its brightness, and also as regards the sight of the rotation.
It is most important to retain the hour of noon, near the zenith, at which meteorological phenomena have less intensity on the sun.
Late in the afternoon, when the sun is near the horizon, at which time the evaporations are great [3] and are crossed by the
sun's rays. And so there are many beautiful shifting hues at sunset, of various colours, and oscillations in the atmosphere, especially in summertime. The phenomena observed at Fátima at noon must be harder to produce than in the morning and afternoon, which /gives far greater value and importance to the former\.
solares.
Until now no one saw the sparkling rotations of the sun, and now everyone sees them on many days and many times. Much of it will be imagination
Até agora ninguem via as rotações faiscantes do sol e agora todos as veem muitos dias e vezes. Muito será imaginação
I wish to put some questions to some meteorological observatory in the country and perhaps to the [3v] astronomical observatory of Coimbra. There is a matter which Your Exa does not mention and which seems to me more important and singular, perhaps, than that relating to the sun.
It is said that at the place of all the apparitions, and at the moment when they were indeed manifesting themselves, a cloud always rose to the sky, starting from the ground.
And it is further said that the cloud was more intense on the day when the children were imprisoned. It is a phenomenon repeated 6 times. Is it true? Are there witnesses to all of them?
At the last apparition my whole family saw the cloud, and as they were [4] some distance away they thought there was fire and incense at the spot. Through a relative of mine and others who were near the children it was ascertained that there was no fire at all.
This phenomenon, repeated 6 times, at fixed hours, is to me one of the most important, and also because it occurred in the presence of so very many people. I am surprised at the little importance attached to this point of the apparitions, which is not recorded as having happened at Lourdes.
It has no explanation at all, with its repetitions, other than a supernatural one. [4v] It would be advisable to obtain witnesses for all 6 manifestations of the appearance of the cloud of smoke. I consider it miraculous. I also consider miraculous the extraordinary manifestations of the sun on the 13th at noon. But it is advisable to find eyewitnesses who will show or state the great differences between the manifestations of the 13th and those which everyone now wants to see and did not see until now.
Considero miraculoso.
I am surprised that Your Exa does not speak of the girl's declarations about peace and the return of the Portuguese troops to Portugal soon. How does Your Exa reconcile these declarations? [5] I would like Your Exa to tell me something on this point. It is true that this matter is material and profane, but it involves a prophecy, which would be very important at present. Might the girl be mistaken? In truth all this may still come to pass. Might the events in Russia and the armistice be the beginning?
It is indispensable to shield the girl from so very many questions. I repeat that it is urgent to avoid the multiple questions.
É indispensavel separar a rapariga de tantas e tantas perguntas. Repito que é urgente evitar as multiplas perguntas.
My son José Maria does not refuse to write an account of what he witnessed [5v] at Fátima22, so he told me. But it would carry more weight if Your Exa wrote him a letter directly, making the request, without Your Exa saying that it was my suggestion.
Forgive me, Your Exa, for this letter with my frank and loyal observations and statements, as is needful.
For myself I would ask the favour of a Hail Mary for my intention, for I am in great need
