9 a.m. Rossio Station. We are in an excellent seat it was almost fought for with fists but we are comfortable. This must be about to leave.—
9h. Estação do Rocío. Isto deve estar a partir.—
We have already gone through the tunnel we stopped at Campolide. The journey will perhaps be tiresome because we have to stop at every station, but as we are in no hurry, that too keeps us amused. [2v] The weather could not be better we are going to have a lovely day after all, we have not stopped at every station7.
Having arrived at the Torres station8, we got into a vehicle I don't quite know what to call it some sort of cart that runs between the station and the town, which is still quite a distance away there we came packed in tight and jolting all the way. The town is quite large and like all towns seems to have little charm we have now come [3] to see the church of Sr. Jesus [de] S. Thiago10 which is very pretty and very remarkable
because it has here a Dead Lord that was found at Troia, when they were ploughing some land. His beard and nails grow, and they say that every first Friday of the month thousands of people come here to fulfil vows because he is very miraculous11, I would very much like to be able to see him12. I managed to see Him. It makes an impression it is certainly a very ancient image it seems [3v] to be of wood but the nails are perfectly natural!
After seeing two country estates that have nothing remarkable about them, we began our way to Rodrigo14 which for me crowned our first day of travel. We came on four donkeys, but very tame donkeys, which did not make us take a single tumble that was the only thing I was sorry about. When we got here, it was already night we had supper [4] and went to sleep.
We spent the day in preparations for the journey. We were to leave at 11 p.m., making the journey by night [4v] so as to arrive there in the morning.
Towards night the weather begins to cloud over and shortly afterwards the thunderstorm breaks but what a thunderstorm it was past midnight and nothing can be heard but thunder and the lightning flashes are continuous what to do not leaving is a desolation. Carlos crosses himself and says that like this he is not going we wait asking Our Lady to drive away the thunder-[5]storm. At 2 o'clock the weather is better they decide to leave, the night is pitch dark they harness the mule to the cart; inside they put some low chairs for us, and with some blankets there we settle in. On the front bench go Carlos's wife and her goddaughter17 behind go we two18 Regina19 and Emilia20. Carlos leads the mule by the halter and so we begin the journey.
[5v] Every now and then, the flashes light up the road, the thunderstorm is further away but continues.
So we go on for more than an hour the roads are dreadful the cart keeps jolting it has the advantage of not letting us sleep Emilia makes us laugh constantly.
We have already begun to climb the Serra de Aire the worst of it is that the rain comes back [6] and we have little protection, for the water that falls from the umbrellas soaks the cart and wets the blankets.
Carlos at times climbs on to the bench and goes on guiding the animal the good thing is that he knows the roads very well.
It is beginning to get light the rain is now very fine almost a wet fog as there is now some light [6v] we see trees split by the lightning of the storm here in the hills, it must have been dreadful. Carlos was right to say he would not come; he knows them.
We have gone a long way over these hills, which seem to have no end. Now they say we are near Fatima it is raining in earnest we are already soaked. So as not to get too cold and on the climbs to help the mule we all go on foot, except Emilia who cannot [7] walk much.
At last we arrive at Fatima it is 9 o'clock the weather is a little better, but the sky is completely overcast and threatens more rain a great many people are arriving, by various roads through the hills like us most of them are wet but they all go, I don't even know what for, as nothing has been fixed and it is only because they say the Lady will speak to Lucia today.
[7v] The cart stays in Fatima we ate something, and now we are going on foot to the Cova da Iria which is the place where they say the apparitions have been.
We walk almost an hour when we arrive at the field a stretch considerably lower than the road and where there are only a few holm oaks, there are a good many people waiting, let's see for what!
It is nearly [8] noon they say the little shepherds are going to arrive I would like to see them. The place where the apparitions have already taken place is marked out with some sticks to leave space for the little ones to be freer from the people but we can no longer get very close, for there are a great many people. The ground is so soaked that our feet sink in we are already so muddy. We decide to stay [8v] at a slightly higher point though further away. There is movement in the crowd it is the little shepherds arriving some men clear a way for them I barely see them they go to the place with the sticks it is raining in earnest.
People begin to say that Lucia says to close the umbrellas, that the Lady is coming but it is raining so much nevertheless everyone obeys and we close our umbrellas. Indeed shortly afterwards the rain stops, but we see nothing more. [9] Our eyes search everywhere. Now a small cloud seems to settle on a holm oak by the sticks, the sun appears between clouds, but with no brilliance at all, it looks like the moon and one would say it has a cross in the middle and now,
[10] and lastly golden; everything is golden what a lovely thing!
Everyone feels fascinated a man near us falls to the ground unconscious suddenly, the sun completely black seems to come loose from the sky and begins to spin round on itself very fast it looks as if it is going to fall a cry is heard from the whole crowd which falls to its knees begging for mercy.
[11] of a heap of stones without noticing. But it all passes in a moment the sun is once more hidden by the clouds, the cloud seems to lift everyone is without knowing what has happened as if stunned they say Lucia spoke with the Lady. We do not manage to see the little shepherds again. We make our way to [11v] Fátima, where we get into the cart and return to Rodrigo the weather is fine only a few scattered clouds can be seen in the sky and the sun has its natural brilliance.
When we arrive, our clothes are already half dry, Emilia is worried because she says we may fall ill but no, what we are is very tired, we eat something and go to bed tomorrow we go to Lisbon.
