To my dear

Ao meu caro

I received your letter today and I am sorry you did not come.

You will find the explanation of what happened at Fatima in today's Seculo*.

There must have been more than 300 vehicles along the road and perhaps, among them, more than 100 motor cars. People came from Lisbon, Santarem and even from Guimarães! From every part of the country.

You can still judge from the Seculo's description the emotion that overwhelmed most of those people.

It was astounding!

Foi assombroso!

And with good reason.

E o caso não era para menos.

Let them — the learned — give whatever explanation they like for the phenomenon, but the fact is that a phenomenon occurred — an unforeseen one — and it occurred precisely on the day and at the hour that those children had indicated.

What are we to conclude from this?

Que deveremos concluir d’aqui?

I do not know.

Não sei.

The sun made rotating movements of dizzying speed.

It could be seen going round, so that it looked like “a rodisio”*, as some peasant or other put it.

And the weather, which had been rainy [1v] and looked as if it would stay so all day, cleared up precisely at that moment. Coincidence? Perhaps.

Coincidencia? Talvez.

But how do the unbelievers explain the fact that the child, seconds before the phenomenon occurred, said “Look at the sun. It is now” .

And the phenomenon occurred. Nobody knew what kind of phenomenon was going to occur, and yet everyone, from the nearest to the farthest (and you will understand that, with some 30,000 people there by the estimates made, some were very far from one another), everyone, I repeat, saw the same phenomenon in those brief moments. So it was not suggestion.

The phenomenon took place.

O fenomeno deu-se.

Let the learned — the unbelievers — explain it to me if they can; I confine myself to bowing before so extraordinary and astounding an event.

Os sabios — os descrentes que me expliquem se pódem, que eu limito-me a curvar-me perante um caso tão extraordinario e assombroso.

Goodbye - Love

Adeus - Saudades

P.S. There is one inaccuracy in the Seculo. The child did not say that the war had ended, but that it was going to end and that the soldiers* would soon return to Portugal.

Joaq.
