THE PREDICTION OF FÁTIMA
A PREDIÇÃO DE FÁTIMA
Last Sunday, the 13th, it was a year since God willed to gather thousands of people on the hills of Fátima so that they might hear, from the mouths of three little shepherds who grazed their flocks in the biblical solitude of those bare hills, promises of Peace, of happiness and of tranquillity for the unhappy and lovely land of Portugal!
The clouds were torn apart in the gloomy, sad sky, and the sun broke through, lighting up the hill!
Rasgaram-se as nuvens no ceu torvo e triste, e rompeu o sol illuminando a serra!
It was the luminous promise of Peace amid the heavy sadness of life, and thousands of creatures, who saw in the blessed light of the sun the smile of God once more blessing the land where such sad evils had spread, fell to their knees, asking that the promise be fulfilled!
The little shepherds, in a state of grace, saw the Virgin's diaphanous mantle pass by; they saw, in the dark lanes, the luminous trail of her bare feet, and the hills grow dark at the hour of bright sunshine, and the hills grow bright, by a miracle, on murky, dark days, when noon rang out far off on the bells of the villages and towns!
The Virgin spoke to the little shepherds in their state of grace, and their souls, pure of evil, understood the Lady's words... and so they gave hope to the mothers, to the sweethearts, to the wives of the soldiers whom the war had taken away! They promised that within a year3 the war would end, and the soldiers would return to their homes!
Along the road, in groups, hands folded in prayer, looking at the sun that had promised Peace, came the mothers, the sweethearts, the wives to whom the sweet promise had been made. They repeated softly, in the hope that God would hear them better: “Within a year the war ends; the soldiers come back within a year!”
Days went by, months went by, and the war went on, went on and on. Some soldiers were dying far away, while others came home happy to embrace their mothers, sweethearts and wives, who got their Sunday clothes ready to go and meet them, while the other women, who had no such luck, in the black calico of mourning wept for the death of those who did not return...
Passavam dias, passavam mezes, e a guerra durava, durava sempre.
Everyone gradually forgot the prediction of Fatima.
Only the mothers, the sweethearts, the wives, whose hearts were still at the war, repeated softly so that God would hear them, kissing the dry sprig of the holm oak of Fatima: "Within a year the war will end, and the soldiers will return to their homes within a year!"
On the 13th of this cold October, after the silence that the twelve strokes of noon brought to the lively noise of the market, while the men took off their caps and the women their hats, and hands were raised in the midday prayer, a light, small, transparent cloud passed across the golden brightness of the sun, and the shadow fell, sudden and strange, as if night had suddenly come, only for dawn to break at once, flooded with sunlight!...
With the sudden darkness that came down, and with the sun that lit up the white houses of the town and the emerald mountain of the castle once the transparent cloud had passed, the prediction of Fátima came back to the minds of all who had heard it a year before, at that very hour!...
interrogation of 8 July 1924, says: “my cousin Jacinta told me at home that the Lady spoke like this: be converted, for the war ends within a year” (cf. DCF, vol. 2, Doc. 8, p. 144 and Doc. 9, of 13 April 1930, p. 228 and 257).
It was on the 13th of this cold and sad month of October that the first news of Peace was read, amid tears of joy, by all the mothers, sweethearts and wives whose hearts were still at the war...
On that day they began to glimpse the hope that the blessed prediction of the hills of Fátima would come true, as the Lady's words to the little shepherds in their state of grace had promised a year before, and as the luminous sun had promised when it tore through the clouds at one o'clock on the misty, dark afternoon of the 13th of October!
