press. The population of the settlements of the council of V. N. d'Ourem and of the neighbouring councils was the best informed of what had happened by virtue of the relative nearness of the place of the apparitions, which allowed many inhabitants of that very vast area to witness the phenomena already known. Countless people who had not gone to Fatima the other times were now resolved to undertake the long and uncomfortable journey to satisfy, some their devotion, others their curiosity. Nevertheless the Catholic press maintained, as a duty of office, the most prudent reserve in the face of such events whose true origin was unknown, and only one or another provincial weekly had alluded [2] in passing to this matter, so delicate and touchy for

periodica portugueza.

putting the faithful on their guard against possible machinations of ill-intentioned men or of the power of darkness. The children, who proclaimed themselves eyewitnesses of the apparitions, and who had been arrested arbitrarily and in bad faith by the administrator of Villa Nova d'Ourem, had long since been at liberty. That authority, having taken them to his house, detained them there for two days, entrusting them to the care of his wife, who treated them with every kindness. During those days he subjected them to various interrogations, trying in vain to make them fall into contradictions and resorting also without result to promises and threats, now to force them to confess that they were acting a comedy, now to wrest from them the secret that, as they said, the Apparition had confided to them and which they could reveal to no one.48

The spectacle I witnessed during the journey from the princess of the Almonda to the adoptive homeland of Gonçalo Hermingues was surprising in the extreme.

[7] It was at this moment that many of the bystanders saw an oval, little larger than an egg, bright white and shining, with the broader end turned downwards, trace in the firmament/ a long straight line. Some observed this phenomenon for a longer, others for a shorter time. I did not see it and I am sorry about that. Dr. F. and many fellow-countrymen of mine affirm that they saw it too. Some of these , whose seriousness it is not permissible to call into/ doubt, assure us they made out a kind of flowers, which were falling from the sky, but did not touch the ground, disappearing on reaching a certain height. The atmosphere took on a yellowish colour, perhaps because of the diminution of the sunlight.

What happened in that swift quarter of an hour is never forgotten, but it is not easy to describe. The sight of the immense kneeling multitude, its anxious and restless expectation , the devotion with which it invoked the Most Holy Virgin, and finally the [8] august solemnity of the moment made up an admirable and touching spectacle. As soon as the sun recovered its usual light, the three children, who had stayed the whole time beside the holm-oak shrub and who declared that the Most Holy Virgin had appeared to them for the fifth time, went back to their homes, and at the same time the first waves of people set off, and little by little the crowd dispersed. The lowest estimates put at 15 or 17,000 the people present at the moment of the apparition. There were, however, those who reckoned there were more than 20,000. I give no opinion, but what is certain is that I have never seen so many people together. It was a beautiful spectacle.
