Part of this letter would later be published, with some textual changes, in the newspaper "A Guarda" of 13 September 1919, in an article by the Visconde de Montelo (Dr. Formigão) dated 5 September 1919, and in the book by the same author As grandes maravilhas de Fátima, Lisbon, União Gráfica, 1927.
It was through these publications that we came to know what we reckon to be the first part of the letter, which, we suppose, will have undergone some changes when it was transcribed by Dr. Formigão.

Draft made by Dr. Formigão of the article that was later published in "A Guarda".
Description of the document: This draft was made on commercial paper (21x27cm), with 26 lines per page, written in two columns per page. P. 1, cols. 1-2 and p. 2, col. 3, contain the text of the article proper: "The 13th of September was approaching [...] that I cannot resist the wish to transcribe it too".
A p. 1, cols. 1-2 e p. 2, col.
The last three lines of column 3 and columns 5 and 6 of p. 4 were left blank. Presumably these 82 blank lines were meant for the transcription of the first four pages of the original letter, which began "As in the month just ended" and would have ended with "maternal protection of the Queen of the World".
On p. 4, at the top of column 7, Dr. Formigão transcribed the last lines of p. 4 of the autograph, now lost: "It was at this moment [...] I did not see it
and I am sorry about it", and goes on with the transcription, not word for word, of the two surviving pages of the autograph: "Dr. F. [...] It was a beautiful spectacle".
In this draft, in the light of the part of the autograph that has survived, we find that Dr. Formigão did not transcribe the whole text and altered it considerably, so that the later drafts also depart from the autograph original.
Of the letter of which B is the first known copy, we present the text in its initial form, giving in the critical apparatus the corrections that were introduced for publication in D.
C - Second manuscript draft of Dr. Formigão's article, sent to the newspaper A Guarda. Lost. The text would be the same as the corrected text B and as text D.
C - Segunda redacção manuscrita do artigo do Dr. Formigão, enviada ao jornal A Guarda. Perdida. O texto seria o mesmo do texto B corrigido, e do texto D.
D - Publ.: VISCONDE DE MONTELO (FORMIGÃO, Manuel Nunes), Os episódios de Fátima - V, "A Guarda", Guarda, 15 (657), 13 Sept. 1919, p. 1, cols. 4-5. Date of writing: 5 September 1919. The wording certainly follows text C, which we do not know, but it is very similar to the corrected text B.
D - Publ.: VISCONDE DE MONTELO (FORMIGÃO, Manuel Nunes), Os episódios de Fátima - V, “A Guarda”, Guarda, 15 (657), 13 Set. 1919, p. 1, cols. 4-5.
In this edition the author updates the spelling and slightly alters text D in certain passages. We present these alterations in the critical apparatus.

[fl. 1 - 2v, p. 1 - 4] [...] As in the month just ended, this month too I went to Fátima on the 13th, but this time without expecting to, because it was not easy and I had no intention of going there.
[fl. 1 - 2v, p. 1 - 4] [...]
X spent the night at my house and the next morning invited me to take a seat in the carriage, an invitation I accepted with excitement.
On the day before, real crowds of people had passed through this village, coming from the direction of the sea, a great number of them having slept here. At the appointed hour we got into the carriage and set off. During the journey I was immensely moved, and more than once tears came to my eyes as I saw the faith and ardent piety of so many thousands of pilgrims. The roads and short cuts were full of people.
There was no track, however small, that did not bring people to the road. It was a pilgrimage that truly made one weep with emotion. Never in all my life had I been given to witness so great and so touching a manifestation of faith. Nothing was seen or heard that betrayed the slightest sense of frivolity or even an intention of innocent amusement. The accordion, indispensable at all pilgrimages and village feasts, was conspicuous by its absence. There was none of the free-and-easy manner typical of young country folk, not even the usual harmless jokes and banter accompanied by shrill guffaws. It was almost ten o'clock when we reached the end of our journey. The crowd, which by that hour was already enormous, approached the place of the apparitions full of respect. The men took off their hats. Almost all the people knelt and prayed fervently. As soon as we arrived, X and I went to the children's house, photographed them and talked with them. That was the scene that impressed me most. I was positively enchanted. That angelic simplicity and that complete lack of concern which they show cannot lie. They do not have the shyness typical of the rough children of the fields and hills in the presence of strangers. It is all the same to them whether they talk with
one stranger or with many. The answers are always the same. They seem like adults in their way of expressing themselves. From the children's house we went on to the parish residence, where, besides the parish priest, there were some friends of mine and of X, with whom we exchanged impressions on the subject of the day. After half an hour we set off for the place of the apparitions.
At noon exactly — astronomical time — the sun began to lose its brightness. There was no one who did not notice this fact, which since the previous May had always recurred on the 13th of each month at the same hour. Shortly afterwards the eldest of the seers told the bystanders to pray.
I shall never forget the violent impression I felt on seeing so many thousands of the faithful fall to their knees, who, weeping, prayed aloud and, full of trust, implored the maternal protection of the Queen of Heaven27.
It was at this moment that many people saw an oval, of a vivid and brilliant colour, with its widest part turned downwards, describe a long straight line in the firmament. Some people saw this phenomenon for a longer time, others for a shorter. I did not see it and I am sorry about it. [fl. 3, p. 5] Mr Dr. Figueirêdo and
Foi neste momento que muitas pessoas viram uma oval, de côr viva e brilhante, com a parte mais larga voltada para baixo, descrever uma comprida linha recta no firmamento. many people from here saw it36. There are some people from here, and very serious ones, who saw a kind of flowers that came from above but did not touch the ground 37. — The atmosphere took on a yellowish colour, perhaps because of the darkening of the sun. — What happened in that swift quarter of an hour is never forgotten39 and also is not easy to describe; later I shall say a few more things, so as not to bore you, Mr Canon, with so tedious a letter; nor did I intend to write such a description, which falls not far short of last month's; Mr Dr. Formigão (whom I was not able to see there) and Mr Dr. Figueirêdo will tell much better than I what took place. In the deposition of the second witness of the Parish Inquiry, dated 31 December 1918, the parish priest of Fátima, in connection with a statement of the witness ("at that moment something extraordinary was passing over the Holm-oak shrub, looking like white flowers, and other people also noticed this phenomenon, saying they were stars"), says: " Here I take the opportunity to say that on this same thirteenth, at about three o'clock in the afternoon, there came to my house, the parish residence, the Reverend António Maria de Figueiredo, most worthy teacher at the Patriarchal Seminary in Santarém, and declared to me that he saw stars in a region lower than the region of the stars, and that he came to my house on purpose to make this declaration to me" (AEL, Documentos de Fátima, Dossier I-1 A, Inquérito Paroquial, fl. 15). Cf. DCF, vol. 1, Doc. 33, of 31 December 1918.
— As soon as the sun recovered its usual light the children withdrew, and with them the first waves of people, who little by little dispersed45. The lowest estimates gave 15 to 17,000 people, and there were those who claimed there were well over 20,00046. I give no opinion of my own, but I believe I have never seen so many people47. It was a beautiful spectacle .
Yesterday I received a letter from Jeronymo49, but dated the 2nd of this month. Since he left there we have heard nothing more of him; we expect him every day. Today I received a letter from Fr. Firmo50 in which he tells me that he has been exempted from military service and that he went to the Seminary after I had already left. — I very much enjoyed going to Pataias. The feast was beautiful. Fr. Casimiro51 is working. Poor man! He has to go to the officers'
Recebi hôte carta do Pe. school as early as October, it seems. I also went to Maceira on the 8th, to the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus53; it was most beautiful. Ours, which was also beautiful, was last Sunday. — Will there be no difficulties about our entry this year? God grant there will not. I am ready for whatever may be needed; I ask you, Mr Cn.
