Ao Sr. Dr. José de Almeida Correia3

Most Excellent Sir:

Ex.mo Senhor:

As a member of the Study Circle4 which Your Excellency has been directing in Coimbra, and whose lessons I have had the pleasure of attending, I thought of offering Your Excellency this brief account of my pilgrimage to Fátima, where extraordinary events took place that deeply impressed the whole country.

My modest piece of writing has no literary pretensions; it is a simple account of what I saw and witnessed, which will stand as the testimony of a witness who keeps the best and deepest impressions of the pilgrimage she made to that place, drawn, like so many thousands of people who went there, by the desire to witness the miraculous signs that accompanied the apparition of Our Lady to some little shepherds.

The competent authority will pronounce on the miraculous character of the signs and the reality of the apparitions when it sees fit. In publishing this brief account, my aim is to draw the attention of those who may not yet know of them to what seems to me extraordinary in these events.

And in offering Your Excellency my most modest work, I hope you will regard it as a token of the interest with which I have followed your lessons, from which I believe I have gained something, and at the same time of my gratitude for the kindness you have shown to the humblest of your pupils.

It was on 7 September that a working woman, the servant of a relative of mine, told me that in Fátima, a village between Leiria and Vila Nova de Ourém, a miracle was taking place with some little shepherd girls to whom Our Lady had been appearing since 13 May,

having promised them that she would appear to them for half a year, and that on 13 October she would make the last revelations to them.

This promise had not, strictly speaking, been made to the three children, but only to the privileged Lúcia, the eldest of them, the only one who received the grace of hearing Our Lady and speaking to her. It was said that people offered the child gold chains and money to tell what she knew; but the little girl would not consent to tell what she had heard from Our Lady even to the parish priest of Fátima, with whom she had made her first communion – she had amazed him then by the way she prepared for an act of worship. On 13 August the administrator of the municipality* went to fetch little Lúcia together with her companions, another little girl and a small boy, also shepherds, who received only the grace of seeing the Lady, without hearing her or speaking to her5.

It was also said that many people who were at that place at solar noon* had felt something extraordinary, supernatural, and had knelt and prayed.

The same had happened on 13 August, the day on which little Lúcia was held under arrest by order of the administrative authority. On the following Sunday, 19 August, the child asked the Lady not to let her be taken for a liar on 13 October; and it was added that the Lady had made her that promise, saying: rest easy, for all those who come here shall see the miracle. And so it came to pass. The people and the parish priest of Fátima himself tried to frighten the child, telling her that if on 13 October the people did not see the miracle, she would be torn to pieces on the spot; to which she would reply, calm and smiling: they won't, no sir, because the Lady does not lie.

So I left Coimbra at midnight between 12 and 13 October with two friends of mine, Dona Ermelinda Gomes Ribeiro and Dona Matilde Forjaz de Sampaio, taking seats on the train in 3rd class, in fulfilment of a vow, and going as far as Chão de Maçãs, where we took a stagecoach that brought us to Vila Nova de Ourém.

We arrived there at 7 in the morning, and went to find the reverend parish priest6 so that he could give us holy communion.

We were able to attend Mass, at which there were a good many people, and afterwards we went to have a small meal from the provisions

we had brought. We had to walk some 18 kilometres, uphill. The difficulty of the road did not dishearten us. We set off along it resolutely, saying the rosary together aloud. People passing by took off their hats as a sign of respect. There was an enormous stream of motor cars, carriages of every kind, bicycles and riding animals; and a great many people were going on foot, as we were.

levamos.

It was suffocatingly hot, and a storm was threatening, for many clouds were piling up in the sky.

The passengers of a small carriage that passed us, good people who noticed how tired we felt, offered to carry our travelling bags for us, a favour we gratefully accepted, trusting in their honesty, although we did not know them. A short while later it began to rain, and the rain grew heavier, driven by a stiff and bitterly cold wind, so that we were soon as wet and soaked through as if we were coming out of a bath.

The road seemed to have no end; a zigzag route, many people wet like us, but always walking on, moved by the same desire, the same longing to reach the place of the apparition in time.

At half past twelve we reached the spot, in good spirits in spite of everything. The spectacle was imposing!

Before us lay a small valley, quite arid, without a single house; thousands of umbrellas, open over people's heads, gave the impression of a real encampment. The multitude was packed tight; torrents of water fell on it, and yet nobody withdrew. The ground around the place of the apparition was clayey and waterlogged. At the spot there stood out a sort of rough portico, formed of three dressed beams; here and there small oak bushes, and all around thousands of people of every class and condition.

We took our place among the multitude and began to say the rosary together aloud, singing the Ave of Lourdes*, in which the people and the ladies joined, and the Queremos Deus*, and reciting the prayer of St. Bernard*, etc.

The rain did not stop for an instant; people shivered with cold, for the wind was cutting. Meanwhile we hear people say: they're bringing the little shepherd girls!

Indeed some men were carrying in their arms the children, dressed in light blue, with veils of white tulle held in place by wreaths of white roses and green foliage.

I look at my companion, Dona Ermelinda Gomes Ribeiro, and notice in her a look of great suffering. I ask her what is wrong, and she tells me she feels a stitch so sharp that it scarcely lets her breathe. A sick lady, with a fever almost every day, wet as she was, with her feet

on the waterlogged ground, and with no means of transport there to take us to a place where she could be cared for, her state distressed me. I thought of massaging her over the pleura, which she accepted; but she was so cold, so wet, that I feared it would do no good.

I confess that by then I had no hope left of seeing the miracle. As the spot was still a good way from the road, we went back to the road to look for someone who would charitably give us a place in a motor car or carriage for my friend, for I greatly feared she would not stand the journey if she had to make it on foot again.

On the road, which we reached with our skirts covered in red clay, no motor car or carriage would spare us a place, either for payment or as a favour.

We were feeling thoroughly disheartened when suddenly cries went up on every side: Miracle! Look at the sun! The rain had stopped as if by magic; umbrellas were closed; we felt a warmth as if we were entering a heated hothouse, and the disc of the sun began to appear, clearly visible through the greyish layer that covered the whole sky. The heat increased, and the sun seemed to come down, lower and lower, showing new and varied hues. We saw what looked like a silvery veil, rounded like the full moon; shortly afterwards it turned bright purple, then red, then emerald green, and finally took on its original colour.

Cries rang out on every side as something like a snow-white form, shining but not hurting the retina, detached itself from the sun, came towards us, went back to the sun, and finally hid among the clouds for the third time. Everyone was weeping, and from many lips came prayers, supplications and acts of faith.

Little Lúcia said that Our Lady had asked her to have a chapel built there dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary; that the war was going to end; that the Portuguese soldiers would soon return to their homes; that the Portuguese should unite and do penance, for God was tired of so many offences; that they should pray the Rosary, in order to avert the punishments that would fall upon Portugal if the Portuguese did not mend their ways.

To our greater satisfaction, after the inexpressible joy, the consolation of having witnessed the great miracle, we had the good fortune to find a place in a motor car that had brought my cousins Jaime Forjaz de Serpa Pimentel and his wife from Luso, which carried us to Vila Nova de Ourém, where some charitable ladies lent us clothes to replace those we had on, which

were still wet, and a hospitable priest7 gave us lodging where we could rest that night. We then continued our journey to the station of Chão de Maçãs, from where we returned to the city of Coimbra by train, in a 3rd-class carriage as we had come.
