In the inquiry to which she was subjected when she was a pupil at the Asilo de Vilar, in Porto, Lúcia de Jesus declared that, after the first apparition, she was visited by many people, and among them some priests, who pressed her with questions and scolded her a great deal, the people of her family telling her that she was lying and [22] her own mother even beating her with a broom handle. She also declared, at another point in the interrogation, that after the thirteenth of August some priests who went to her house to speak to her called her a humbug.
