"The miracle of Fátima – During last night some people who had themselves driven to Fátima in a motor car went to the place where the much-talked-of phenomenon of the thirteenth of this month took place, with which the press has been so much occupied, and, armed with an a-[22v]xe, cut down the oak tree under which the three children (shepherdesses) presented themselves on that day. They brought away the tree as well as a table on which some believers had set up a modest altar, on which were found the photograph of a religious image (Our Lady), an arch over it made of myrtle branches, two tin lanterns, and two crosses, one of wood and the other of cane wrapped in tissue paper. All these objects, as well as two pots with plants, entered this city at nine o'clock today and are on exhibition on a first floor in the largo do Seminário. The car, at the moment of leaving the said place, had a "breakdown", and the "chauffeur" and his companions had the fright of their lives, fearing to be found there. The case must have caused a great sensation in the minds of the believers and good Catholics of Fátima and its surroundings. It was rumoured that admission would be charged for viewing the branches of the tree and the images, and that the proceeds would go to benefit the School Canteens of this city, but we know that the board of this charitable institution refuses any sum coming from that source.
