Last night some people who had driven to Fátima by car went to the place where the much-talked-of phenomenon of the 13th of this month occurred, with which the press has been so taken up, and, armed with an axe, cut down the oak under which the three children (shepherd girls) had taken their place that day.

They brought back the tree, as well as a table on which some believers had set up a modest altar, where a photograph of a religious image (Our Lady) was found; an arch made of myrtle branches that stood over it; two tin lanterns; and two crosses, one of wood and the other of cane, wrapped in tissue paper.

All these objects, together with two pots of plants, arrived in this city at 9 o'clock today and are on display on a first floor in the Largo do Seminário.

As it was leaving the said place, the car had a “breakdown”, and the “chauffeur” and his companions got the fright of their lives, afraid of being found there.

The incident must have caused a great sensation in the minds of the believers and good Catholics of Fátima and its surroundings.

It was rumoured that admission would be charged to view the branches of the tree and the images, and that the proceeds would go to the School Canteens of this city; but we know that the board of this charitable institution refuses any sum coming from that source.

At 21:00 yesterday, a group of townspeople staged a parade through the city's three main streets, some of them carrying, as in a religious procession, the objects brought a few days ago from Fátima, where the famous phenomenon of the 13th of this month took place.

One of them carried the holm-oak shrub; another, with two more acting as his acolytes, the three of them got up as clergymen, carried a cross under a parasol; and lastly, some others bore a printed picture of a religious image, topped by an arch of myrtle and flanked by two lanterns.

To the ringing of a handbell and the beat of a drum, about 100 people chanted a litany. As they were passing near the Lemos jeweller's shop, a bucket of water was thrown over them and over a civil police officer.

The lady who threw the water was fined by the police, but her husband decided not to pay the fine and to make a scandal of it in court instead.

Everyone who had no part in the parade, especially the Catholics, is scathingly condemning the indifference shown towards, or the consent given to, such an outrage by the administrative authority, who during his stay here has shown nothing but plain incompetence in carrying out his duties, being unable to prevent shameful incidents unworthy of a city, such as the one we have been reporting.
