To the Minister of the Interior – At nine o'clock last night a group of common people put on a parade through the three main streets of the city, some of them carrying, in procession, the objects brought a few days ago from Fátima, where the much-talked-of phenomenon of the thirteenth of this month took place. One of the men carried the holm-oak shrub, another, attended by two more dressed up as clerics, carried a cross under an umbrella, and finally some others carried the print of a religious image, topped by an arch of myrtle and flanked by two lanterns. To the ringing of a bell and the roll of a drum, about a hundred common people chanted a litany, and a [23] bucket of water was thrown over them and over a civil policeman as they were passing near the Lemos jeweller's shop.
The lady who threw the water was fined by the police, but her husband decided not to pay the fine and to make a scandal in court.
Ao Sr. Ministro do interior – As nove horas da noite de ontem, um grupo de populares exibiu um cortejo pelas três principais ruas da cidade, conduzindo alguns deles, processionalmente, os objetos há dias trazidos da Fátima, onde se deu o afamado fenómeno do dia treze do corrente mês. Um dos populares conduzia a carrasqueira, um outro, acolitado por mais dois, figurando de eclesiásticos, conduziam, sob um chapéu de sol, uma cruz e, por fim, uns outros transportavam a estampa duma imagem religiosa, sendo encimada por um arco de murtinheira, ladeada por duas lanternas. Ao som do badalar duma campainha e do rufar dum tambor, cerca de cem populares entoavam uma ladainha, sendo sobre os mesmos e um polícia civil lançado um [23] balde de água, quando passavam próximo da ourivesaria Lemos.
A senhora que lançou a água foi multada pela polícia, mas o marido resolveu não pagar a multa e fazer escândalo no tribunal.
