The case of the apparition of the Virgin to the three shepherds at the place of Vale da Iria is causing our free-thinkers serious qualms. A trio of them took it into their heads to come to Vila Nova de Ourém to see whether they could get some followers, and, in comradeship with the administrator of the council, the master tinsmith, they appeared on the first, after much advertisement, at the Republican Centre, to speak to the crowds against the miracle of Fátima. Both this lecture and a rally were advertised in some newspapers of the capital and in leaflets distributed in this town and throughout the council on market day and already on the previous Sunday. What is known, however, is that for the miracle, or whatever they care to call it, no invitations were needed, and at the place of the apparition of the Virgin, on the thirteenth of October, upwards of fifty [24] thousand people gathered, with no need for the intervention of the authorities to keep order, nor for military force, despite the great number of motor cars, carriages of various kinds, bicycles, etc., etc., and without the slightest accident. Consider now the much-advertised rally at the place of the apparition of the Virgin, which never took place, because only the famous speakers turned up, accompanied by the administrator of the council and by six more individuals from here, and guarded by a detachment of the republican guard from this town and others come from Tomar and Torres Novas, who were obliged to go to the place at Fátima, given the speakers' awareness of the seriousness of the role they were about to play! So then, Ministers of the Interior and of War, are the republican troops diverted from their duties to guard the backs of the republican gentlemen? It was a real fiasco, already the lecture at the Centre, and much greater at the place at Fátima, where the speakers had to give up, since the people of the council, out of contempt, did not go to the place, despite all the invitations made to them, for only eight people turned up there to hear them, apart from a great number of women who, on their arrival, struck up the Bendito and at once turned their backs on them. Here, then, is the parallel between the thirteenth of October and the second of December. That is why we say to them: try another trade, you and whoever invited you, after the flop you suffered and the fright, when on the way back to this town you were treated to a few stones, for which reason the sergeant commanding the detachment had to open fire."
