My dear Grandmother,
Minha querida Avó,
Here I come to tell you what happened at Fátima. I shall simply repeat what the Saraivas said they saw, and which I believe to be the absolute truth, since everyone confirms it.
On Friday we went to Thomar and from the windows of the Misses Mousinho7 we saw [2] carriages go by full of people, very quiet and thoughtful, and one could see they were in the grip of a serious feeling. Many people on foot and on donkeys were following the same road. Some must have been from the hills, from very far away; the men had hats like Father's, Alentejo-style, but bigger, and cudgels curled over at the top like those of the shepherds of old. We saw nothing more. The motor cars and carriages of Thomar were all hired; in [3] Ourem the same, and in all the towns near here. People went so far as to pay 100:000rs for the hire of a motor car from Ourem to Fátima, which is close. Just imagine, Grandmother...
Imagine a Avó...
Now here is what the Saraivas said the next day.
Agora eis o que as Saraivas disseram no dia seguinte.
After 7 hours in a carriage in frightful rain they arrived soaked to the field of the miracle... There were way too many people!! It is reckoned at upwards of 50:000 people.
Between noon and one [4] o'clock the little girl arrived, accompanied by some men who kept her from being crushed by an excess of affection.
Lucia (the little girl), when she reached the holm-oak shrub (a small bush) where the Lady appears, asked the people to pray the rosary while she waited. Families then gathered in groups of 8 to 10 people and prayed the rosary among themselves with the greatest devotion. [5] It was a spectacle of medieval faith [sic]. I forgot to say that when Lucia arrived the rain stopped immediately.
Suddenly the sun began to turn a greenish colour, changing successively to a pale yellow that made people look like corpses; at this it gives a sort of turnabout, a jolt; it seemed to be coming down to fall on the earth. Everyone fell to their knees and all one could hear were cries of “God help us! [6] Jesus! Most Holy Virgin! At that moment the heat was so great that it was almost suffocating. Everyone imagined it was the end of the world. People were weeping. This lasted 10 minutes. When they came to themselves after that great emotion, Our Lady was already there. Nothing could be seen, but the little girl was looking at a fixed point and smiling.
She answered everything with the greatest simplicity and said this: “that Our Lady was asking men to make an effort to be better, for her beloved son was already angry, that the war would end soon and that the Portuguese soldiers would return to their homes. Above all she recommended that they pray a great deal. If they wished, they should build a little cha-[8] pel there, and venerate her under the name of Oura Lady of the Rosary”.
Senhora do Rosario”.
When questions were put to her about Oura Lady, she said that she was lovely, had a white dress veryto straight (it must be a tunic), barefoot, and on her head a very long blue kerchief (mantle). Her voice is very beautiful, and she called the little girl by her name: “Lucia”.
The little girl only answers what she is asked, but without any embarrassment, [9] though before the apparition she was very shy.
She says, as on the other occasions too, that the Lady tells her
a secret, which she tells no one, not even her mother. A lady the other day showed her 10 notes of 100:000 in her hand, saying she would give them to her if she told her the secret. I think this a very wrong thing to do, but the little girl was not tempted.
When she repeats what she hears [10] her speech is correct, but when she explains other things it is the speech of the little ones of the countryside: “Then didn't you hear, ma'am?” and so on in that style.
Despite the rain that soaked everyone, and the length of the journey, nobody fell ill. That too seems to be God's doing!
Apesar da chuva que encharcou todos, e do comprimento do caminho ninguem ficou doente. Parece tambem por Deus!
[11] This is true, without doubt, for other people have already told us and it is always the same thing.
Accept, dear Grandmother, the heart full of tenderness of your granddaughter who kisses your hand
