Francisco Marto fell ill on 22 23 December 1918; everyone in the house fell ill except the father; the neighbours helped to look after the sick, as did the father. Francisco was in bed with the force of the illness for some fifteen days, getting up at the beginning of January, very weak, more and more so. He would say to his mother, oh mother, I can only pray half the rosary (5 decades), when he was praying the rosary as usual. He would say "Oh mother, I don't dare pray the whole rosary". His mother would answer him that if he could not pray it aloud, he should pray it just in his mind. He said many times that he never forgot the prayer that Our Ldy had told him. Oh mother, never forget the prayer that Our Ldy taught you, for I never forget it. But, son, sometimes I forget it. The little boy would say "When you are walking along the road, pray it. O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell, take all the little souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of it". He always prayed it when he prayed the rosary. Sometimes he would say: Oh mother, I don't know how to offer the rosary as many people do. "My son, offer it to Our Ldy. But however you understand". Sometimes the mother [3v] would say to him and
Dizia “Ó minha mãe não me atrevo a rezar o terço todo”. Mas, filho, ás vezes esquece-me. “Meu filho offerece-o a Na Sa. Mas como tu entenderes”. Ás vezes a mãe [3v] dizia-lhe e
to the little girl: You are lying! Our Ldy did not appear to you. You are the one who is lying. But I never saw Our Ldy. You don't see because you don't want to, because you are very bad, a great liar.
The little boy began to go out; he even went several times to the Cova da Iria. He never had his health again. People sometimes told him he was getting better. He said he was not. He said that His godmother Thereza de Jesus said to him one day: if you get better I will weigh you in wheat to offer to Our Ldy of Ortiga. He answered: It is too late now. He said this to her more than once. (When he was pasturing the flock his mother would send him into his godmother's hills7, and the little boy would say that his mother should not teach him to steal, and that if she wanted him to go, she should let his godmother know.) On 3 April he was given the viaticum there by the parish priest. So am I not to receive Our Ld? The family called the parish priest to hear his confession on the 2nd. On the 3rd the Holy Viaticum was administered to him in the morning, fasting. The day before he had asked his mother to let him stay fasting. All right, said his mother, after midnight you will take nothing more. He wanted to sit up [4] in bed. The family did not let him. He was very happy. He asked his mother: Shall I not receive Our Ld again, mother? I don't know, son. For the rest of the day he asked for water and milk. At night it seemed to his mother that he was worse and she asked him how he felt. He said he was not worse and that nothing hurt him. He died on the following day, the 5th, a Friday, at about ten o'clock. He would have been 11, if he had lived, on 11 June. He had been born at about ten o'clock at night, more or less10.
Pediu durante o resto do dia agua e leite. Morreu no dia seguinte, 5o, sexta-feira, pelas dez horas.
Half an hour before he rendered his account to God, his mother said to him. Oh Francisco, are you worse? No, what I would like is to see my godmother. His

father went to call her. She came and he, as soon as she appeared at the door, said oh godmother, give me your blessing and forgive me? His godmother put her arms around him, not wanting to believe that he would die yet, and said: Oh Francisco, you're not going to die yet. Ten minutes later he died. When he died, he gave a sort of smile and died. Jacinta said, why are you crying, when he was laughing. Then why aren't you crying? She never cried, she did not feel sorry for him or, if she did, she did not show it. She did not even cry at the funeral. And she said, it's you who are going to die. He did not d-[4v]ie. He died, but he went to Heaven. But she prays for him, when the family prayed for his soul.
pae foi chamá-la. Ella chegou e elle, logo que ella assomou á porta, disse ó madrinha dê-me a sua benção e perdôa-me?

She fell ill on 22 December 1918. On the 20th she had still gone with her mother to the penitential procession of Boleiros, organised by Manuel Paulo12, the Most Hy Sacrament going from Fatima to Boleiros.
She was in bed for some eight days, got up; a tumour appeared on her left side; she went back to bed in the month of January or February. The tumour burst. Two or three months later she went to the hospital of V. N. d'Ourem, in June and July. After the tumour burst her mother took her, carrying her in her arms, to the doctor Dr. Preto twice, 15 days or more apart. It was the 2nd time that he said she should go to the hospital. At the end of two months he told her mother to take her out, that he could do nothing more for her, only an operation in Lisbon, but that even so she would very likely not get better. During her illness she went many times riding on a little donkey to the Cova da Iria, at her own request, as she insisted. On 13 Jo she went there for the last time. When she reached the road, she said to her mother, be quiet now, don't say anything, because I want to pray two rosaries (5 decades each), and at the Cova da Iria offer them to Our Ldy, because she did not want people to ask her questions, and her mother should not say anything to her. She slept little during her illness. But she gave no trou-[5v]ble during the night.
She prayed the rosary (5 decades). Sometimes she would say oh mother, I can't pray any more except sitting down. Then her mother would say, if you can't pray, don't pray. During her illness, while she could still walk, she would call the neighbours' children and teach them the catechism. As long as she lived there were always children at the door. She had two silk ribbon bows that had been given to her. She asked her mother to let her go and offer them to Our Ldy at the Cova da Iria. She hung them up and then said, I shall never come back here again.
Once, when she went to confession in Lisbon before going into hospital, she did not understand the priest well, and her mother asked her whether she had understood the penance and she said yes, and whether she had made a good confession and she said yes, and she added that she had no big sins, only scolding the youngsters when they made a noise or squabbled, and lack of patience with the dressing of the hole. She was always in great pain. She complained when they moved her from the waist up. She changed her clothes two or three times a day because of the pus, and that cost her a great deal. Every now and then she would go on [6] foot (and only once on a donkey) to the parish church to go to confession and receive communion. In Lisbon she went to confession once or twice and received communion three times, twice in the church of the Estrella. She made her 1st communion two years ago, a year after the last apparition.
