Most Excellent and Most Reverend Sir,
Ex.mo e Rev.mo Sr.
In fulfilment of the task that Your Most Reverend Excellency deigned to entrust to me, I have read the booklet entitled "Os episodios maravilhosos de Fatima". Having already appreciated, in our days as fellow students at university, the solid learning and solid piety of its author, I found that the said booklet contains nothing against Faith or Morals. It is pervaded by a marked fragrance of confidence in the Immaculate Virgin Mary, which can only do good to the souls who read it.
Although its author does not claim to have the last scientific word on the validity or supernatural character of the facts of Fatima, he nevertheless gives a conscientious testimony which will help to clarify their objective nature.

On the morning of the thirteenth of May 1917 a boy and two girls were grazing, as was their custom, a small flock of sheep belonging to their families, on a property in the Serra de Minde, in the parish of Fátima, municipality of Villa Nova d'Ourem, district of Leiria.
The eldest of the three children, named Lucia de Jesus, was the daughter of Antonio dos Santos, who died the following year, and of Maria Rosa dos Santos, and was ten years old. The boy and the other girl, who were brother and sister, were called Francisco and Jacinta, the former being nine and the latter seven years of age. Their parents were Manuel Pedro Marto and Olympia de Jesus Marto. They were Lucia's cousins. The houses of the two families, which, though not rich, nevertheless possessed some property, stood close to one another in the hamlet of Aljustrel, about a kilometre from the parish church of Fátima. None of the children could read or write. Their religious instruction was still very rudimentary. Only Lucia had made her first communion.
That day it was nearly noon by the sun*. As was their custom, the three children, after spending a good while at their innocent games, began to pray the rosary*, a devotion very dear to the inhabitants of that parish. They had scarcely finished when they suddenly saw the dazzling brightness of a flash of lightning shine in the air a short distance from them and, almost at the same moment, above the crown of a small holm oak, the radiant and enchanting figure of a [8] woman of extraordinary beauty appeared. Frightened by so unusual
and so unexpected an occurrence, they thought of running away, but they were at once completely reassured by the kindly manner of the Apparition, who in the sweetest voice promised that she would do them no harm at all.
The Apparition seemed to be no more than eighteen years old. Her dress was of the purest snow-white, as was the mantle, edged with gold, that covered her head and most of her body. Her face, of flawless nobility of line, with an indefinable something supernatural and divine about it, was serene and grave, as if clouded by a slight shadow of sadness. From her hands, joined at the height of her breast, hung a beautiful rosary ending in a gold cross, whose beads, white as ermine, looked like pearls. From her whole figure, surrounded by a splendour brighter than the sun's, beams of light radiated, above all from her face, whose beauty was impossible to describe and incomparably superior to any human beauty.
A dialogue took place between the Apparition and Lucia, lasting about ten minutes.
Jacinta saw the Apparition and clearly heard the words she spoke to Lucia, but she never spoke to her, nor did the Apparition ever address a word to her. Francisco only saw the Apparition and never heard what she said to Lucia, although he was at the same distance and had excellent hearing.
On that day the Apparition invited the three little shepherds to return to that spot on the thirteenth of every month for six consecutive months. The spot, commonly known as the Cova da Iria, lies a little more than two kilometres from the parish church of Fátima, beside the district road from Villa Nova d'Ourem to Batalha. At first no one believed what the children said, and everyone called them liars, even their own families. On 13 June some fifty people went with the seers to the place of the apparitions, hoping to witness something extraordinary. In the following months the numbers of the curious and the devout grew considerably, with perhaps [9] five thousand people gathering beside the sacred holm oak in July, eighteen thousand in August and thirty thousand in September.
At the moment when the apparition was taking place, countless mysterious signs, to which many trustworthy people bear witness, followed one another in the atmosphere and in the sky.
The Apparition insistently urged everyone to do penance and pray the rosary. She told the children a secret, which they could not reveal to anyone. She promised them Heaven.
Prometeu-lhe o Ceu.
She asked for a chapel to be built in her honour at that spot and declared that on the thirteenth of October she would perform a miracle so that all the people would believe that she had really appeared there. On the thirteenth of August, moments before the time of the apparition, the children were abducted by a trick by the administrator of the municipality*, who kept them in his house for two days, threatening them with death if they did not retract or at least reveal the secret the Apparition had entrusted to them.
That month the apparition took place on the nineteenth, at the spot called Vallinhos, when the children no longer expected it until the following month. On the thirteenth of October some seventy thousand people of all classes and social conditions, from every part of the country, were present. When the dialogue between Lucia and the Apparition was over (the Apparition told her she was the Lady of the Rosary), the seer told the bystanders to look at the sun. The sky was completely overcast. It was raining torrentially.
O firmamento estava completamente nublado. Chovia torrencialmente.
As if by magic the clouds suddenly parted, and the sun appeared at the zenith in all its splendour and spun dizzily on itself like the most beautiful Catherine wheel imaginable, taking on all the colours of the rainbow one after another and sending out beams of light with an astonishing effect.
This sublime and incomparable spectacle, which was repeated three distinct times, lasted about ten minutes. The immense crowd, overcome by the evidence of so great a prodigy, fell to its knees; the Creed, the Hail [10] Mary and the act of contrition burst from every mouth, and tears – tears of joy, of gratitude or of repentance – welled up in every eye.
The entire press, including the large-circulation papers, reported on the astounding events of Fátima respectfully and at considerable length. Opinions of these facts, even in the Catholic camp, were not unanimous. The children's statements that the great European war would soon end contributed to this divergence of opinion. But in spite of this, year after year, devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima grows and spreads
everywhere. The flow of pilgrims grows ever greater, above all on the thirteenth of each month, on Sundays, on feasts of the Most Holy Virgin and, more than ever, on the thirteenth of May and the thirteenth of October each year.
The graces and prodigious cures attributed to the intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima are countless. In vain have the representatives of the civil authority made every effort to stem the mighty and unceasing torrent of crowds drawn by the humble voice of three innocent little shepherds.
Intolerance and persecution have, as always, only made the faith and piety of believers livelier and more intense. The flow of the devout, coming from every part of Portugal, keeps growing ever more numerous, more fervent, more persevering, and there seem to be no human forces capable of stopping it. The ecclesiastical authority, which opened an inquiry into the matter, has not yet completed its work, which is by its nature difficult and slow, nor has it pronounced its verdict, which it is our duty to accept, whatever it may turn out to be.
While we await that verdict, let us strive to live as good Christians, strictly fulfilling all our duties; let us do penance for our sins and fervently pray the rosary, that devotion so dear to all the Portuguese, so that Our Lady of the Rosary, if She really appeared at Fátima, may deign to dispel all doubts and place that fact beyond all dispute in good faith.

By way of complement to these brief notes on the apparitions, may I be permitted to transcribe here a letter addressed to a friend of mine and published in the issue of the fifth of October 1918 of the newspaper "A Guarda", the weekly with the largest subscription in the two Beiras. Setting out in detail and with the most scrupulous exactness the circumstances of an extraordinary cure connected with the history of the apparitions, this letter has a double importance, by virtue of which it naturally finds its place here.

16 Notes by Dr. Alberto Diniz da Fonseca, according to information given by Dr. Formigão himself to Dom José Alves Correia da Silva, Bishop of Leiria, in a letter of 22 January 1930: "The account of Jacinta's death was written by Dr. Alberto Diniz da Fonseca, who, when I read him the notes relating to that episode, offered to write it up so that it could be included in the pamphlet "Os Episodios maravilhosos de Fatima", from which I transcribed it into the book "As grandes maravilhas de Fátima". I believe it is the best passage in the book. If no dates were indicated in it, it is because the author of the passage aimed above all at achieving effects of a moral and religious order and, if the author of the book did not think it necessary, when transcribing it into the book, to indicate dates and other details, it is because he had already done that work on p. 19 of the pamphlet "Os acontecimentos de Fatima", published in 1923". linha 11: Não sabemos se isto terá qualquer fundamento, o que é certo é que substituiu por qualquer que seja o fundamento desta crença, o certo é que;16 Notas dos Dr. Alberto Diniz da Fonseca, segundo informação do próprio Dr. Formigão a D. José Alves Correia da Silva, Bispo de Leiria, em carta de 22 de Janeiro de 1930: “O relato da morte da Jacinta foi feito pelo Dr. Alberto Diniz da Fonseca, que, ao ler-lhe os apontamentos relativos a esse episodio, se offereceu para o redigir afim de ser inserido no folheto “Os Episodios maravilhosos de Fatima” d’onde o transcrevi para o livro “As grandes maravilhas de Fátima”. The facts — only a part of them, and undoubtedly the less important part, — are narrated here in all their simplicity and with the most scrupulous impartiality.

Everyone, believer or unbeliever, has the right to think what he pleases about the origin and nature of these extraordinary events. Nevertheless, no one of good sense will fail to find apt the exclamation of a distinguished lawyer who personally witnessed the arbitrary and violent measures taken by the administrative authority to prevent access to the place of the apparitions: "Upon my word! I didn't believe, but now,";
Cada qual, seja crente ou descrente, tem o direito de pensar o que lhe aprouver ácerca da origem e natureza desses successos tão extraordinarios. Entretanto ninguem de bom senso deixará por certo de achar justa a exclamação proferida por um illustre advogado, que foi testemunha presencial das medidas arbitrarias e violentas adoptadas pela auctoridade admistrativa para impedir o accesso ao local das apparições: “Palavra d’honra! Não acreditava, mas agora,”;
