I ask the... Director of the reputable periodical, the “Correio da Beira”, the favour of sparing a little corner of his newspaper for these brief words.

Having already seen the extraordinary event of Fátima spoken of in various newspapers, and since my daughter3 and I were eyewitnesses, I am simply going to tell, with all the sincerity that characterises me, what our mortal eyes saw!

On the eve of 13 October we hired a carriage, having been very fortunate to find a coupé at that juncture, in Torres Novas. Leaving there at ½ past 12 or 1 in the afternoon, we went on to Fátima, where we arrived at the ringing of the Ave Marias, having rested only at Charneca4, perhaps a quarter of an hour, to give the horses a break.

Since I have mentioned Charneca, I must add that of the 7 leagues from Torres Novas to Fátima we covered perhaps 4 or 5 of heath; and it lives up to its name! All rugged ground and loose stones, with fine olive trees, which produce better than ours in the Beira Alta, although ours are well tended and those are fed only in the strips of soil among those same stones and in the clayey ground.

A landscape pleasant to us because it was unknown to us.

In Fátima we rested at the house of the most worthy Parish Priest and were treated by him and his good sisters with every care and attention.

The next day, the 13th, we went first thing in the morning to the place of the apparition. Meanwhile, I am pleased to say that Fátima is a small hamlet, quite pretty, of perhaps a hundred and something hearths.

At 8½ the road to the field of the apparition was already lined with carriages, motor cars, carts, donkeys and many people on foot. It must be 2 kilometres from Fátima to the site of the phenomenon.

When we got there, our carriage drew off to the side of the road, as others did, to make way for the traffic. Even at that hour there was an immense crowd. From inside the glazed coupé we faced the very extensive field, looking like a basin, raised at the sides and sunken in the centre, forming an enormous bowl, with groups here and there, and a long valley, which put us in mind of what the Valley of Josaphat must look like!

There, far off, to one side, we could see many people surrounding the place of the apparition, marked by 2 wooden posts with a cross in the centre and 2 lanterns on the posts.

The 13th dawned rainy, with a leaden sky and wind.

O dia 13 apresentou-se de chuva, o céu plúmbeo e vento.

At 9 or 9½ it grew darker and rained harder, and it seemed to us the day could not improve. As we saw that the rain was continuing, at 11 o'clock we resolved to leave our hothouse and lookout..., and we went along with the groups towards the place that some little shepherds had announced as the stage of supernatural scenes. At noon the 3 little shepherds arrived. Lúcia, aged 10 or 11, is the one who speaks; the others, Jacinta, the youngest, and Francisco, brother and sister to each other and cousins of Lúcia, said they had seen a very beautiful Lady, dressed all in white, with a cloud at her feet.

A few minutes after the arrival of the little shepherds the rain stopped, and the sky, dark until then, precisely at the hour (it would be 1 in the afternoon) at

which the 3 astronomers6 had announced the most phenomenal event that could occur, cleared a little opposite the place of the announced apparition, which made almost all eyes instinctively fix on that same spot.

A truly impressive scene, witnessed by 40:000 to 50:000 people, as many as were approximately estimated!

I do not affirm what I did not see. We did not see Our Lady, nor do we consider ourselves worthy of it. But we saw in the sun, by itself, the affirmation of a phenomenon, of a supernatural occurrence!

How it happened and where it came from, we cannot explain. But the fact occurred, and against facts there are no arguments.

As I have said, at 1 o'clock, in the sky, at the place where the cloud had moved aside, it cleared; and what was our astonishment when a silvery globe appeared, making a small turn and appearing crossed here and there by the clouds! This 3 times, with an interval of perhaps 3 to 4 minutes.

At that moment, behind us, the scene of the little shepherds was taking place beside the holm oak; we stayed 7 or 10 metres from that spot to escape the throng. The eldest of the little shepherdesses at this point imposed silence, and the rest of the scene there was for the 3! After this charming rehearsal or prelude, the King-Star, as though eclipsed by the clouds but not entirely hidden, suddenly breaks out in all its splendour, very different from usual, a very brilliant red cloud or flame that covered it, and after a few moments that globe or sphere was agitated nervously as if driven by electricity. It seemed to swell and to want to plunge down or speak to the earth, to announce an event of rejoicing and terror!

This scene was changed by a yellow, golden cloud; and so this reality, which to mortals had seemed a dream, gradually disappeared! I wish I could describe this unique, marvellous event in polished phrases; I confine myself to narrating it with the simple expression of the truth, as witnessed by us.

If it had all been announced by men of science, astronomers, it would be no wonder at all; but no.

Only the simple and innocent voice of children awakened the curiosity of thousands of people.

Now it is not natural that these simple children should have had the bold pretension of bringing news to the learned: nor did they propose to teach the masters!

Their aspiration was more modest; in very simple words they now merely stated that they had seen a very beautiful Lady, with hands joined and dressed in white, who told them that at that place they should have

a chapel built under the name of Our Lady of the Rosary; that people should stop offending God, who was already too much offended! That the war was going to end, and that our soldiers would come home.

Previously, the same Lady had told them something that the little shepherdess Lucia cannot reveal.

When we got into the carriage in Torres Novas, the hotel maid came and brought us the packed provisions to help us in those inhospitable parts, and told us in a mysterious tone:

“It seems there's going to be a great row there!” The carriage rolled off. I said to my daughter: I have got into the habit of praying to Saint Bartholomew (advocate against fear). As we do no harm to anyone, we believe nobody will have the right to do it to us! Our Lady will protect us and all who are going there, who are not to blame whether the miracle happens or not!

“Parece que vai haver lá grande barulho!” O veículo rodou. Eu disse para a minha filha: habituei-me a rezar a São Bartolomeu (advogado do medo).

Little did we think that we would witness it at the moment when the nervous sun had held the audience spellbound. It seemed to be coming towards the earth, announcing the miracle and greeting the Queen of Heaven and of the universe, who at those moments was speaking to the 3 little shepherds, as the three children spontaneously and intemerately6 affirm.

I believe, and nothing makes me averse to believing, in view of what I saw. But, as my voice is weak and feeble in the desert, let us hope that other stronger and more authoritative voices will confirm it.

As soon as the King-star had returned to normal, everyone withdrew in the best order and in silence, subdued by the truth of the facts! Mishaps: the vast field of the miracle was all clay, divided into plots by loose stone walls.

As it had rained, it was turned into mud. As soon as I got out of the carriage I sank my boots into the mud and my feet were so heavy that I thought I could not walk! On we went, on and on, until we stopped quite near the holm oak, already cut down and stripped, whose little twigs were given to the devout, just as our brothers who go to the front take keepsakes and relics of the family.

It moved us, however, to see ladies like ourselves in little white shoes, thinking they would find dry, firm ground, where there was only shifting clay! A pity they did not climb higher... treading the mud of the earth with indifference!

As this is already long, I shall finish, and I thank you very much in advance for your patience in putting up with me.

Nor does it surprise us that among thousands of people there should be someone like our coachman, whom, as he had stayed by the carriage at the top of the valley, I asked:

– Well, Mr Manuel, did you like it, and did you see the sun?...

– Então, sr. Manuel, gostou e viu o sol?...

It seems that at that moment he was feeding the horses! A great materialist (though a very good person besides)...

No wonder.

Nada admira.
