Lúcia de Jesus
As soon as they arrived at Ourém, the children were shut in a room and told that they would not leave it until they declared the secret that the Lady had confided to them. The next day, after being questioned by a lady, they were taken to the council administration and questioned again, someone even offering them gold pieces to reveal the secret. In the afternoon they were again questioned about the secret. They were taken to the jail and threatened that they would be made to stay there if they did not tell it. As they would not tell it, they were threatened that they would be fried in oil. At that point, in the presence of the children, the administrator told an individual who was nearby to get ready a cauldron of hot oil. He then called Jacinta, saying that she was the first to be burned. She went promptly, and Lúcia, in her deposition, adds ingenuously that she went without saying goodbye. They questioned her and put her in a room. Next they called Francisco and told him that Jacinta was already burned and that he would suffer the same fate if he did not declare the secret. They questioned him and sent him to the same room. Then it was Lúcia's turn. They told her that her cousins were already burned and that she would suffer the same fate if she did not tell the secret. Although she thought it was true, the seer was not afraid, as she herself declares. They sent her to join her cousins, and a man said that it would not be long before all three were burned. They were taken [28v] to the administrator's house, and there they spent one more night in the same room. The next day almost the same thing happened: interrogations morning and afternoon, with many promises and threats. On the sixteenth they went again to the administration, at about ten o'clock, but nothing was obtained from the seers, as on the other occasions, until finally the administrator went to take them to the parish residence of Fátima.
