Lúcia de Jesus
On the sixteenth of August, the day of the fourth apparition, after the sad episodes at Ourém, Lúcia asked the Lady for a miracle so that the people would believe, and She said that in the last month she would make a sign in the sun and that everyone would believe. After what had happened in the seat of the council, and in the face of the doubts that so many people expressed about the reality and supernatural character of the apparitions, it was natural that Lúcia should think of asking the Lady for evident proof that she was not a liar, as many claimed. If she did not think of it, someone would certainly have advised her to make that request. On the thirteenth of September Lúcia pressed for the fulfilment of the promise. Here are the exact words that appear in the report on fol. 526: "I asked again [29] that she would work a miracle for the people to believe, because they said I was a humbug who ought to be hanged and burned. The Lady gave me the same answer as the other time".
A dezasseis de agosto, dia da quarta aparição, depois dos tristes episódios de Ourém, a Lúcia pediu à Senhora um milagre para que o povo acreditasse, e Ela disse que no último mês faria um sinal no sol e que todos haviam de acreditar. Depois do que se passara na sede do concelho e em face das dúvidas que tantas pessoas manifestavam acerca da realidade e sobrenaturalidade das aparições, era natural que a Lúcia se lembrasse de pedir à Senhora uma prova evidente de que ela não era mentirosa, como muitos pretendiam. Se não se lembrou, decerto alguém a aconselharia a fazer esse pedido. No dia treze de setembro, a Lúcia insistiu pelo cumprimento da promessa. Eis as palavras textuais que constam do relatório a fls. 526: “Pedi outra vez [29] que fizesse um milagre para o povo acreditar, porque diziam que eu era uma intrujona que devia ser enforcada e queimada. A Senhora deu-me a mesma resposta da outra vez”.
