"In August, on the 13th, I saw the sun come down in the sky at the time of the apparition. It never came down as much as that time, not even on 13 October. All the objects around me turned yellow. The people, hearing a noise by the holm-oak shrub, started to run away. Some men, who were up a tree, fell, without any harm coming to them. I, seeing what was happening, told the people not to run away, because it was Our Lady appearing. The multitude then stopped running away, and almost everyone uncovered their heads, many falling to their knees.

1 The handwritten document, in Dr. Formigão's handwriting, contains five depositions: Joaquim Xavier Tuna, Joaquim Vieira, António Ribeiro, António Baptista and Maria de Jesus. We suppose that these depositions were gathered by Dr. Formigão, who will have made this handwritten copy on the basis of notes he will have taken at the time he gathered the depositions. In the inventory of the Formigão Archive, these depositions are listed as separate documents. We also edit them separately (Docs. 289, 290, 291, 292 and 293).

On 13 September I saw a cross of great size come out of the sun and head towards the east. Its progress was not very hurried. Sometimes it appeared, other times it vanished, until it leapt out of sight. I saw still other things that I am not able to explain. In the parish of Lapas there were people who, at the same hour, saw the cross".
