Very dear Friend
Mtº prezada Amiga
Your Exa has nothing to thank me for; in a case of this kind, who would not bend over backwards to please and console everyone, within the limits of their poor means?!... I sincerely congratulate myself if in any way I was able to console you with the sight of the privileged child, my dear Lady, and I am still beside myself with the astonishment in which I was left by the stupendous miracle, the unexpected marvel which I had the good fortune to contemplate, being so unworthy of so great a grace!
[1v] Do you know that this time the Holy Family appeared? And that the phenomenon of the Sun took place when Our L.y said to the little girl: “Tell the people to look at the sun”?! — I have not heard that any further apparition has been announced, but I shall not hold out long without going to speak with the fortunate children. The child answered a priest who
asked her why she did not keep looking at the vision all the time and lowered her eyes: “No, because She blinds”! Thus explaining the brilliance and beauty of the Lady.
It is certain that Our L.y ordered them to go on praying the rosary a great deal. It seems she has made this recommendation every time. She said she wanted a Chapel there, and that the war would end very soon, which she had already promised on the other occasions. But she also said [2] that if after this sign, this warning, the people did not mend their ways, a great punishment would come upon Portugal.
A wretched man who went there with a knife, saying that if he saw nothing he would kill the children, came back from there ill, could not continue on to his village, stayed here in Riachos (a place ten minutes from the quinta) and in the morning was found dead! All this makes one shudder and tremble, does it not?
I do not know that anyone has yet been put in charge of collecting alms; I saw several people hand money to the Parish Priest for the Chapel, and if Your Exa wishes, I will most willingly undertake to receive whatever you send from there, to see that it reaches his hands.
[2v ] Our L.y always appeared grave, without smiling, and the two little girls, separately, described this vision in exactly the same way: Our L.y with the white rosary, on the left St. Joseph, and the child Jesus between the two.
It all seems like a dream to me, and it seems to me that I did not give it its due value, that I did not kiss the children with the reverence and emotion due to those who had been in conversation with the Queen of Heaven and earth! Ah, my dear friend, a country that receives so astounding and supernatural a grace cannot die. May everyone recognise it thus and bow to the truth of a fact so evident and irrefutable, it seems to me.
I embrace you and your dear daughter, and I congratulate José on the fulfilment of his mission as an apostle. We must all be apostles from now on.
