My dear
Meu querido
Yesterday I went to Urros with Fernando3 and Maria Theresa4. When we got there we met Maria de Lourdes5 on the road, who said to me: “Have you heard about Fatima?”; I answered that I knew nothing, and she then told me that they had received a telegram from Maria de Jesus Raposo saying: “Astounding miracle!” and that they were anxious to know what had happened. As you know, on the 13th
of this month the last apparition of Our Lady. to the children of Fatima was due to take place, and they said that the Lady had [1v] told them that in October something would happen after which there would be no more unbelievers. M. de Jesus's telegram seemed to confirm that something extraordinary had happened.
At that moment the post arrived with a letter from her to Piedade7, which Piedade at once began to read aloud there and then, in which she told her what she had witnessed together with forty thousand people, which is how many she says had gathered there on that day. I shall give you a summary of what she relates. She says it had rained all morning, but that towards two o'clock in the afternoon the sun appeared through the clouds, and that at that hour — which has always been [2] the hour of the apparitions — she suddenly saw the people who were closest around the children turn and look at the sun. She learned afterwards that the little girl had told them that Our Lady. had said to her: "tell the people to look at the sun". They all looked and saw a silvery disc, luminous but one that could be gazed at without the slightest effort, which she compares to a small mirror, stand out from or superimpose itself on the sun and begin coming down with a rotating movement, stop, and start again with the same movement. Around this disc, a lovely cloud, now pink, now yellow, now purple, which coloured the faces of the bystanders [2v] and everything around them, and around this the horizon, as it were, bounded in a yellow circle, around which were some arcs, all equal and at an equal distance from one another, which she represents thus

This phenomenon was witnessed by all that crowd, for some newspapers, such as the Diario de Noticias, the Dia and the Ordem, already relate it through eyewitnesses. When the apparition was over, the little girls related that Our Lady. had appeared to them with St Joseph and the Child Jesus on her right, and had told them that she wanted a small chapel to be erected to her there, that those apparitions were a [3] proof that she protected Portugal, but that it was necessary for everyone to pray and do penance, because otherwise a great punishment would fall upon Portugal. That the war would end soon, but on this point the letter is a little confused, so I cannot repeat to you what it says. She also said that she was Our Lady of the Rosary. All this the little girl repeated in a clear, measured voice, without showing the slightest embarrassment at finding herself surrounded by thousands of people. And the smallest one, who is six years old, even when separated from the other, said exactly the same thing, without contradicting herself on a single point. There you have what happened, and which you have perhaps already [3v] seen described in the newspapers.
As for conclusions, everyone may draw whichever he likes. If the apparitions really were true, the truth will impose itself in any case. Even if the heavenly phenomena that accompanied the last vision can be explained by science, there remains the truly remarkable coincidence that they took place on that day and at that exact hour, and that they were announced long in advance in these words: that in October something would happen after which there would be no more unbelievers. M. de Jesus says that an impious man was converted right there [4] on the spot, crying: "I believe, I believe, I believe!". I don't know what I would have given to have been present at this extraordinary scene. And the ladies of Urros, who could have gone, who were about to go, and in the end did not go! Now they are extremely sorry.
to be the brother of one who has the nickname “the sly one” and who sells pork in Mangualde. Maria Rita14 also had a letter from hers. I have already sent to ask him how much the journey costs. I had already thought of writing to Sophia Burnay15 [4v] about it, but I doubt that she can give anything for it, since there are so many of them that no amount of money would be enough. In any case I shall try. It seems that they pay only for the passage in Spain, and that the rest is at the government's expense.
A Maria Rita14 tambem teve carta do d'ella.
I cannot write any more, because it is already very late. I hope you continue as well as you say. It would be excellent if you could still come here to spend some time.
I embrace you tenderly
Abraço-te ternamente
