My very dear teacher

Minha muito querida mestra

I received your postcard too late to do what you wished. By the time it reached me, our dear traveller was already well on her way. So I am still keeping the Brief, waiting for a safe opportunity to send it. Some time ago I copied out a list of the various Centres and Confraternities and wrote to many of them, but so far only 3 have given any sign of life. On a separate sheet I am sending a co-[1v]py of those with which I am in contact. The Manuals should be delivered to me very soon, as I have already sent back the last proofs. It has been a very slow piece of work, but there has been no negligence on my part; I never kept the proofs longer than was needed to revise them. The Bishop of Portalegre5 must already have the book, and I will send one to Tortozendo as soon as possible.

I also spoke to Mr. Sousa, and he told me that perhaps what we want can be arranged, but very slowly.

The echoes of the great event at Fátima, in the municipality of Villa Nova d’Ourem, have surely reached you by now. It comes down [2] to this: for unbelievers an inexplicable event took place; for the faithful, Our Lady manifested herself to Portugal. I cannot find words to describe what happened. I had to struggle with difficulties of every kind to go to Fátima, but I managed it, and I thank God for it.

The site of the Apparitions is in the middle of the heath, and the landscape is as Portuguese as can be.

We arrived towards 10 o'clock7, in torrential rain that soaked us to the bone. The crowd was astounding. The newspapers speak of 50,000 people; I do not doubt there were more. No one showed any bad temper about the weather; not a bad word was heard. People were praying aloud and singing. [2v] Towards 1 o'clock I went down from the road into the field and stood close to the very rough little altar set up at the place of the apparition, but I never managed to see the little girls. As soon as they arrived they told people to close their umbrellas, and at once the rain stopped, and the sun, the everyday sun, broke through the grey veil that had covered the sky all morning. We went on praying. I ask the time. Someone answers: “It's a little after half past 1”. So we are right at solar noon*. A few minutes later I hear something like a gigantic sigh, and someone says to me: “Look at the sun”. At first I noticed nothing, but seconds later I see it as if it were the moon, [3] of a very pale silvery blue; from then on the sun is tinged green, purple, yellow, blue, but it always remains without rays. It throws out, far off, rolls of smoke, so to speak, of whatever colour it is showing, but the shape of the disc is perfect and that

Pergunto as horas.

disc spins in a dizzying way, and at a certain point the sun came down. Later it shows itself further to the right and then further to the left, or vice versa. At one moment the disc takes on a vivid rose colour; behind each hill there rises something like a veil of the same colour. Fields and crowd, everything reflects it.

Campos e multidão tudo a reflecte.

There are no words to describe such splendour. I have thought a great deal [3v] about the words of the Church: “Who is she that cometh forth as the morning rising?”* And the people? The people weep, cry out, implore Our Lady and Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament*. There is a mixture of trust, joy and fear. Like everyone, I feel that we are in the very midst of the supernatural, and I can only say like the others: “Our Lady, help us”. I do not know how long it lasted, but I heard people say 4 minutes. It seemed to me much longer.

Antoninha10 manages to see one of the little girls, very flushed, bathed in tears, in the arms of a man, and later that same man, a doctor11, repeats the little girl's words to her: Our Lady asks that people should not offend [4] Our Lord any more, and that they should do penance. She promises the end of the war soon. Mothers are to pray and trust that the soldiers are coming back. She blesses all the people and asks for a little chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary.

I want to send you an extremely well-written description that appeared in the “Seculo”. It is a pity that the author suddenly remembers which newspaper he is writing for and writes a few words to suit its taste.

My dear M., my heart is so full of all this that, if I could, I would speak of nothing else.

Now it remains for us to ask Our Lady that her visit to our land may become [4v] an indisputable fact for everyone. With the Rosary in hand that should be achieved.

of this kind and that the instruments did not register any solar movement. People are talking of collective suggestion, but when we went there at the word of a child who announced to us, in Our Lady's name, a sign for the 13th, we had no idea of what was going to happen.

At the moment when the sun came down, the clamour of the crowd was much greater; so everyone saw it at the same time, and near me a man was crying out in terror: "Most Holy Virgin, help us, we are all going to die here. Forgive our sins!" [top margin of fol. 4v] I must stop, as it is time. A thousand affectionate remembrances to everyone in your house, and today especially to the new little Sister14. Believe me [top margin of sheet 4] your dear one. Your ever devoted and grateful friend

Creia-me [margem superior da folha 4] a minha querida. Minha sempre amiga obrigada
