[1] I acknowledge receipt of Your Excellency's letter4 and I am sorry I cannot go to Soudos6 just now. I already knew that your esteemed mother was quite ill, and I do not forget her at holy Mass. May Our Lord continue to give her strength to bear with patience so many illnesses, and restore her to health quickly and completely.

I let Garcez11 know; he certainly cannot go there.

Here I remain at your service with the sword of Damocles14 over my head. My greatest wish is that, if possible, it may not fall on me before the end of the school year.

I went to Fatima and, like everybody except Pinto Coelho, who, besides being somewhat vain, has a mania for singling himself out in everything, I saw the solar phenomenon and became convinced that it was naturally inexplicable, as as fulfilment of a prophecy made six months before and as a miracle in itself, at least quoad modum*. The articles in A Ordem caused grave scandal, astonishing even many individuals who are not practising Catholics and who had not gone to Fatima.

The writer could have recommended prudence, caution and reserve, and that no one should anticipate the judgement of the Church, but he should not have written in so unusual and irritating a manner. He was quite free to send his testimony to the Patriarch, but he should not have come out /in public in a Catholic newspaper, with the authority that his age, his prestige and his long record of service to the cause of the Church give him, to wound the

On 27 September I heard that prediction from the mouths of the children and on 13 October I saw the sign and saw that all the people believed.

Therefore, even if the phenomenon were not be-[1v]yond the forces of nature, there still remained the prophecy, which was fulfilled precisely on the day, at the moment and at the place at which it had been announced that it would come about.

Antonio Bastos of Valle de Figueira, who was my fellow student at the Seminary, had lost the faith and had not known what it was to pray for a good ten years. Well, he told me today that having gone to Fatima much against his will, solely to accompany members of his family, mocking everything and everyone along the way41, at the sight of the

He read the articles by Pinto Coelho, and convinced himself in view of what he said that he had been the victim of an illusion.

May God enlighten Bastos and forgive Pinto Coelho, who, despite his good intentions, has been a blunderer and has done harm in immense measure with his excessive and imprudent zeal.

Last night a motor car carrying Carbonari*, among them a certain Fialho, left here secretly for Fatima, and there, in the dead of night, like highwaymen, they tore down the wooden frame and brought it back together with the cross, the arch of greenery and a picture of Our Lady. They did not also bring the holm-oak shrub, because only a small part of its trunk was left, and I do not know whether they took that. But to the front to fight the

Germans — that is where they will not go, these heroic civilians. They did not even dare to go to Fatima by day, the brave fellows. 68 [2] It already seemed to me that for a work of God the persecution was too slight, and that things were still only at the beginning. What encourages me is the certainty that if it really was Our Lady who appeared, things will not stop here. She will conquer.
