My dear Anna

Minha querida Anna

I want to share this with you, since it was you I turned to when I wanted reliable information. But I do not even know what to tell you, and I will not try to explain my impressions! Praised be God for letting me live to see that day! I firmly believe that It is the Truth; it was in that Faith that I went there. I had moments of distress and dismay there, which [1v] did not make me stop believing; they only grieved me greatly! That was when, at the solemn moment, I saw nothing of what the others were seeing! I saw nothing in the sun then; I saw nothing there that justified all the rest that I was seeing around me. But that spectacle, and everything I had been seeing since 10 o'clock in the morning, were enough for me to go on believing. But it was a struggle, because at the same time I was sad, a sadness which, without my [2] want-

ing it, showed on my face, which made an impression on some people. We set off, and when we had gone a few kilometres by car, Marianna Ribeira5, who had seen everything and had heard the child's message (I was not close enough to hear the words, but I had been able to see that the child was talking very animatedly, in contrast with what I had seen before, as I shall tell you later), Marianna says to me: look at the sun, it still isn't normal. [2v] So I look, and I saw; I vouch that I saw, and I would swear to it if necessary. The sun was without brilliance, without colour, and I could stare at it. A light white cloud was passing. I said: let me see when the cloud has passed. It passed and, still staring at it, I saw it pass through different colours which I cannot specify, and it turned green, a really light green, like parsley green, with a golden ring around it, and spinning. Some very long rays seemed to touch the earth, and the sun seemed to be separated from the sky. Then the sky took on some pink glows; [3] 2/ around the sun it changed to yellowish, and further off there were patches here and there. After some long moments, how long I cannot say, it became normal and I could no longer stare at it.

rer me vinha á cára, que a algumas pessôas fez impressão.

Why did I see it there and not at the place itself? Did it happen to anyone else besides me and Geni14, who saw nothing at the place and saw something afterwards, though not as much as I was seeing and describing to her, whereas Marianna was one of those almost in ecstasy! I do not know; what I know, what I vouch for, is that this is how it happened! As we had arrived early, we went over to Aljustrel*; we went on foot and it was already raining hard. I saw the [3v] little girl, we spoke to her, we asked her some questions, which she did not seem willing to answer,

although she smiled at us in a very simple, kindly way. When pressed, she told the story of the first Apparition, like someone repeating something already told many times, just as you had sent word of it to me. She said nothing more and we did not insist.

I would very much like you to tell me who the man is who carried her in his arms, and exactly what she was saying. I was told that this man is a doctor from Torres Novas17, that he had been an unbeliever, that he has gone there on the other occasions, and that after talking with the children he came to believe. It is true, I am sorry not to be [4] 3/ closer now to people who are following this more closely. Tell me what you know for certain, but tell me who said it and who saw it. It is not for myself that I need these assurances; it is for the others who ask, for those in good faith and for..... the others. From here only we went, with our car companions, who were Marianna Ribeira, Ma do Carmo Albergaria and the little Pereira de Mello Salema girl. In another car the [4v] Pinto Coelho family; and I know that the Coruches went from Estoril. Of all these, only the Pintos Coelhos raise doubts or show exaggerated prudence, Domingos even going so far as to write in the "Ordem"* that on the following day he saw the same thing in the sun! And he makes many speeches about prudence, as if we did not know that the Church is always prudent and that we must abide by its decisions.

I was sorry not to see you; I would have liked so much to find people who could tell me more things.

[5] We are not lost, Anna, if Our Lady comes to us. Now, when I pray, I see before me nothing but that rough arch of pine, the two oil lamps and a few bunches of flowers, and in front of that those people praying the rosary and singing the litany*, only

because they believed that Our Lady had been there and was going to be there! Do write to me and tell us something more: answer the question I asked you, and this one too: is it true, what you told me before, that on the day after the one when the apparition did not take place because the children had been taken prisoner*, the little girl [5v] said that Our Lady had spoken to her on the following day26? In short, tell me whatever you know that is interesting.

How soaked we got! I had a big furry coat which I had taken for the cold, but not even an umbrella; well, that great coat soaked through like a sponge, and so did the clothes underneath and my skin, from head to foot. In the car I took off the coat so that my body and my dress could dry in the cutting little breeze; we travelled barefoot to be more..... comfortable, and put our shoes on the engine. And not a sneeze, not a rheumatic pain, and I tell you that [6] 4 there were some in the party who are not strong. I shall be waiting for a letter from you when you have the patience!

Much love from your very fond friend

Were Branca and the girls there too? Are they still there? We never managed to go and look for Maria Romana at Estoril: she mustn't mind, it was not meant badly. Give them my love.

A Branca e pequenas tambem estavam? Dá-lhes saudades.
