Entrevista com o Sr. Visconde de Montêlo
Estancia de misterio e de prodigio – Curas extraordinarias.
– Fonte miraculosa?
The sacrilegious outrage that some unknown evildoers committed against the chapel of Fátima in the early hours of the sixth of this month3 aroused a unanimous feeling of indignation and protest throughout the country, and has once again brought into prominence that picturesque village, gracefully perched on one of the spurs of the Serra d'Aire, where almost five years ago extraordinary events took place that will never fade from human memory. The entire press condemned this outrage in strong terms; its echo resounded in both houses of parliament, and the government promised, through the minister of foreign affairs, to punish its authors with all the rigour of the law and without any leniency whatever.

mystery and prodigy, we decided to ask the Visconde de Montêlo for an interview for our weekly; he recently published an interesting booklet entitled "Os episodios maravilhosos de Fátima". The illustrious nobleman and distinguished writer, who received us with the most winning kindness and affability, willingly granted our request despite his many occupations.
His Excellency, with the delicacy of feeling that distinguishes him, began by congratulating our newspaper, rightly regarded as one of the best weeklies in the country, whose orientation he considers highly patriotic and most in keeping with the supreme interests of modern civilisation, which is essentially Christian. We thanked him for his kind references to our modest weekly, and he then turned to the subject of the interview proper.
— No doubt — says His Excellency, as he lights a magnificent Havana cigar — your newspaper's readers know more or less fully the strange events of which Fatima was the scene in 1917, both from the reports the press published at the time and from the rather summary description of them I gave in my pamphlet "Os episodios maravilhosos de Fatima", published by the Empresa Veritas.
Two little shepherd girls and a little shepherd boy asserted that a lady of incomparable beauty appeared to them on the thirteenth of each month from May to October of that year, making various communications to them, some of them secret. The Vision, according to the testimony of the three children, promised to say on the thirteenth of October who she was and to perform a prodigy that day so that everyone would believe her words, and at the same time asked for a chapel to be built in her honour at the place of the apparitions.
Several times she declared that God was greatly offended by the sins of men and that grave punishments threatened them; she recommended to all that they do penance, advised the frequent recitation of the rosary, and lastly said that she was the Lady of the Rosary. On the 13th of October of that year about 60,000 people, of every class and social condition, gathered at the place of the apparitions, drawn by the vague report of the discreetly announced miracle.
It was then that the most astonishing and divinely beautiful spectacle that it is given to man to behold unfolded before the eyes of that wondering crowd. It had rained torrentially all morning. The sky, in all its immense vastness, was covered with dense black clouds.
Toda a manhã chovera torrencialmente.
At astronomical noon* the sun suddenly tears through the clouds that veil its face and, like a marvellous Catherine wheel, spins dizzily on its axis for ten minutes, sending out in continuous bursts sheaves of light and torrents of flame of the most beautiful and varied colours.
— Did Your Excellency also witness that astonishing phenomenon?
— V. Ex.a tambem assistiu a esse assombroso fenomeno?
— I did. I had already been to Fátima on the thirteenth of September, but I did not witness anything extraordinary then, except the faith and piety of the crowd, which that day reached perhaps as many as 30,000 people.
— Assisti.
On the twenty-seventh of the same month I went back there to see and question the seers, and I confess that I was deeply impressed by the tone of conviction and sincerity with which they described the facts they claimed to have witnessed. But only on the thirteenth of October, when I witnessed the solar phenomenon, did I recognise the importance of the marvellous events of Fátima and decide to carry out, on my own initiative and purely for intellectual satisfaction, an inquiry as thorough and detailed as my professional duties allowed.
— And after the thirteenth of October 1917 did any more extraordinary events take place?
— Astronomical or meteorological phenomena worth mentioning I neither witnessed nor heard of after that date. The only thing to record is the edifying death of one of the seers, the youngest, Jacinta de Jesus, who asserted that the Lady of the Rosary had appeared to her again, making some revelations to her and condemning the excesses of luxury and indecent fashions.
— But cures are cited which, it is said, cannot be explained naturally and which have done a great deal to strengthen belief in the apparitions and to increase the numbers of the faithful going to Fátima.
— That is true. Numerous cures, which the people call miracles but on whose nature the Church and Science have not yet pronounced, have taken place in recent years and are attributed to the powerful intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima.
— Would Your Excellency be so kind as to describe some of the most interesting cases?
— Most willingly. But a detailed description of those cases would take me too
— Da melhor vontade. Mas levar-me-ia muito longe a descrição
far afield. Besides, quite a few were narrated at considerable length in the pamphlet I have already mentioned. So allow me to confine myself to pointing out three or four of the most extraordinary cures I know of. One is that of Maria do Carmo, aged 47, of the hamlet of Arnal, parish of Maceira, district of Leiria, who had tuberculosis and was cured on 13 October 1917 at the very place of the apparitions. Her cure astonished the inhabitants of that populous parish, who considered the poor creature beyond hope, with only a few days to live. Another cure no less interesting is that of Dona Noémia da Conceição Grego, aged 18, daughter of Amilcar Augusto Grego and Dona Maria Theresa Mautempo Grego, of Torres Novas, who suffered from mental illness as well as other grave illnesses which the doctors could not diagnose with precision, giving conflicting opinions.
minuciosa desses casos.
Against the expectation of everyone who knew her condition, including the doctors who were treating her, she found herself completely cured after several pilgrimages made to Fátima by her mother, who always went on foot and barefoot, and by some of the sick girl's friends, who went there to beg the Virgin of the Rosary to intervene miraculously on her behalf. Another cure, equally extraordinary, is that of Dona Maria Manuel dos Santos, aged 27, daughter of the late Carlos Alberto dos Santos and of Dona Amélia Julia dos Santos, living in this city at Rua de D. Estefânia, no. 115, 3rd floor. This lady suffered horribly for many long years from a double tuberculous coxalgia*, of which she was completely cured after a sister of hers, who never ceased to ask Our Lady of the Rosary for her cure, made a pilgrimage to Fátima. Finally, another cure, among countless others I could cite, is that of the Rev. Fr. Antonio Lopes Larangeiro, chaplain in the hamlet of Moreiras Grandes, parish of Assentiz, municipality of Torres Novas. This worthy priest had cirrhosis of the liver and tuberculous peritonitis. As we are childhood friends, as soon as I learned that a team of doctors had examined him together and that he had received the last sacraments, I went to see him to give him
a farewell embrace. He was dying. That was on 30 January of this year. I was getting ready to leave for Paialvo station, to return to the capital on the Porto express, when a man arrived from Fátima whom my friend had sent to fetch water from the spring at the place of the apparitions. Some days later, to my great surprise and satisfaction, I received a letter from him telling me he was cured. On the thirteenth of this month8 I met him at Fátima, where he had gone in thanksgiving, having ridden twelve leagues* on horseback that day, together with almost all the people of his hamlet.
dar o abraço de despedida. Estava moribundo.
