I THE APPARITIONS OF FÁTIMA

I AS APARIÇÕES DE FÁTIMA

On the morning of 13 May 1917 a little boy and two little girls were pasturing, as was their custom, a small flock of sheep belonging to their families, on a property in the serra de Aire situated in the parish of Fátima, council of Vila Nova de Ourém, diocese of Leiria.

The eldest of the three children, named Lúcia de Jesus, was 10 years old and was the daughter of António dos Santos, who died the following year1, and of Maria Rosa dos Santos.

The boy and the other girl, who were brother and sister, were called Francisco and Jacinta, the former being 9 and the latter 7 years of age. Their parents were Manuel Pedro Marto and Olímpia de Jesus Marto. They were Lúcia's cousins. The homes of the two families, which, though not rich, nonetheless had some means, stood close to one another, in the hamlet of Aljustrel, about one kilometre from the parish church of Fátima. None of the children could read or write. Their schooling was rudimentary. Only Lúcia had made her first communion.

On that memorable day the hour of astronomical noon was approaching. As was their custom, the three children, after having spent a good while in innocent games, began to pray the five decades of the Rosary, a devotion very dear to the inhabitants of that parish. They had scarcely finished reciting it when they suddenly saw, a short distance from them, the dazzling brightness of a flash of lightning shine out in the air and, almost simultaneously, there appeared above the crown of a small holm oak a radiant and enchanting figure of a woman, of extraordinary beauty.

Frightened by so unusual and so unexpected an occurrence, they thought of running away, but they were at once completely reassured by the kindly attitude of the Apparition, who in a most sweet voice promised that she would do them no harm whatever.

The Apparition seemed to be no more than eighteen years of age. Her dress was of a most pure snowy whiteness, as was the mantle, edged with gold, that covered her head and the greater part of her body. Her face, of an irreproachable nobility of features and with something supernatural and divine about it, appeared serene and grave and as if clouded

by a faint shadow of sadness. From her hands, joined at the height of her breast, hung a lovely rosary finished with a gold cross, whose beads, white as ermine, looked like pearls. From her whole figure, surrounded by a splendour brighter than that of the sun, beams of light radiated, especially from her face, of a loveliness impossible to describe and incomparably superior to any human beauty.

A dialogue took place between the Apparition and Lúcia, lasting about ten minutes.

Jacinta saw the Apparition and heard distinctly the words she spoke when addressing Lúcia, but she never spoke to her, nor did the Apparition ever address a word to her. Francisco only saw the Apparition, never hearing what she said to Lúcia, although he was at the same distance and had excellent hearing.

That day the Apparition invited the three little shepherds to come back to that place every month on the 13th, for six consecutive months; the place is commonly known by the name of Cova da Iria and lies a little more than two kilometres from the parish church of Fátima, beside the district road from Vila Nova de Ourém to Batalha. At first nobody gave any credit to the children's statements, and they were branded liars by everyone, even by their own families.

On 13 June some fifty people accompanied the seers to the place of the apparitions, in the hope of witnessing extraordinary things. In the following months the gathering of the devout and the curious increased considerably, perhaps five thousand people assembling beside the sacred holm oak in July, eighteen thousand in August and thirty thousand in September.

At the moment when the apparition was taking place, countless mysterious signs, to which many trustworthy people bear witness, followed one after another in the atmosphere and in the sky.

The Apparition insistently recommended that everyone should do penance and pray the five decades of the Rosary. She told the children a secret, which they could reveal to no one. She promised them Heaven.

She asked that a chapel be erected in her honour at that place and declared that on 13 October she would work a miracle so that all the people would believe that she had really appeared there.

On 13 August, moments before the hour of the apparition, the children were craftily abducted by the administrator of the council, who kept them in his house for two days, threatening them with death if they did not retract or at least did not reveal the secret which the Apparition had confided to them.

That month the apparition occurred on the 19th, at the place called Valinhos, when the children no longer thought it would take place until the following month.

On 13 October, in the presence of about seventy thousand people of all classes and social conditions and from every part of the country, once the dialogue had ended between Lúcia and the Apparition, who declared to her that she was the Lady of the Rosary, the seer urged those present to look at the sun. The sky was completely overcast. It was raining torrentially.

O firmamento estava completamente nublado. Chovia torrencialmente.

As if by enchantment the clouds suddenly parted, and the sun at its zenith appeared in all its splendour and spun dizzily on itself like the most beautiful firework wheel that can be imagined, taking on in succession all the colours of the rainbow and casting beams of light of a startling effect.

This sublime and incomparable spectacle, which was repeated three distinct times, lasted about ten minutes. The immense multitude, overcome by the evidence of so great a prodigy, fell to its knees; the Creed, the Hail Mary and the act of contrition burst from every mouth, and tears, – tears of joy, of gratitude or of repentance, sprang from every eye.

The whole press, including the large-circulation press, referred in respectful terms and at considerable length to the astonishing events of Fátima. Assessments of these facts, even in the Catholic camp, were not unanimous. The children's statements concerning the imminent end of the great European war contributed to this divergence of opinion.

But, in spite of this, from year to year devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima grows and spreads everywhere. The gathering of pilgrims is ever greater and takes place especially on the 13th of each month, on Sundays, on the days consecrated to the Most Holy Virgin, and, more than ever, on 13 May and 13 October of each year.

The graces and prodigious cures attributed to the intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fátima are countless. In vain did the representatives of the civil authority make every effort to put an end to the swollen and unceasing stream of the multitudes drawn by the humble voice of three innocent little shepherds.

Intolerance and persecution had, as always, only the effect of making the faith and piety of believers still more lively and more intense. The throng of the devout, coming from every part of Portugal, continues

to be ever more numerous, more fervent, more persevering, and there seem to be no human forces capable of stopping it. The ecclesiastical authority, which has opened the corresponding inquiry, has not yet completed its work, which is by its nature difficult and lengthy, nor has it delivered its veredictum, which it is our duty to accept, whatever it may be.

While we await that veredictum, let us try to live as good Christians, strictly fulfilling all our duties; let us do penance for our sins and pray with fervour the five decades of the Rosary, that devotion so dear to all Portuguese, so that Our Lady of the Rosary, if She did indeed appear at Fátima, may deign to dispel all doubts and place that fact beyond all contestation in good faith.

– José de Oliveira Rito, 5 months of age, son of Faustino de Oliveira Rito and Maria José Rito, of Chainça, Santa Catarina da Serra, Leiria, had been paralysed in the left leg for some weeks, all efforts to restore the lost movement to that limb having been useless. He was cured after several promises made by his mother to Our Lady of Fátima.

– Maria Francesca Aloisi Fitipaldi, 57 years old, a native of Naples, Italy, and resident for more than nineteen years in Leiria, suffered horribly from various illnesses which made her life almost unbearable (dyspnoea, heart lesion, stomach ulcer, albumin, etc.). She could neither speak, nor lie down, nor leave the house. On 12 October 1917, at night, she saw from one of the windows of her house the crowds heading for Fátima and was very sorry not to be able to go too. Full of faith, she asked Our Lady of Fátima at least to improve her condition so that she could rest a little. Feeling sleepy, she went to bed and slept the whole night. The next morning, when she woke, she found herself perfectly well.

– Quitéria de Jesus, 57 years old, of Chainça, Santa Catarina da Serra, who had a serious injury in one of her eyes caused by a violent blow, was cured almost instantly by applying to the eye a portion of earth taken from the place of the apparitions.

– José das Neves, 10 months of age, son of António das Neves and Maria José das Neves, of Loureira, Santa Catarina da Serra, was always very sickly. He grew thinner and thinner. Everyone said it was impossible to rear him. He vomited all the food he took.

One day his mother made a promise to go with him to Fátima and pray the Rosary there if Our Lady would deign to cure him.

The next day the child began to eat everything proper to his age, and did not vomit again.

– Manuel Vicente Marques, of Alcaidaria, Reguengo do Fetal, in danger of having to have an arm cut off or of being left crippled, invoked with full confidence Our Lady of Fátima, to whom he made a promise, and was completely cured, being left with no defect at all.

– Noémia da Conceição Grego, 18 years old, daughter of Amílcar Augusto Grego and Dona Maria Teresa Mautempo Grego, of Torres Novas, suffered from a serious lung condition resulting from a pleurisy of which traces had remained. As a result of severe sorrows which she went through and which

greatly embittered her soul, she lost the use of reason. Several doctors treated her without obtaining any satisfactory result. Some of them maintained that it was a case of cerebrospinal meningitis. Others said frankly that they did not know how to diagnose that strange illness, which proved resistant to all treatment. The patient was fed by force, as she refused every kind of food. She had continual fits of rage. Believing that they wanted to take her to Fátima, she let herself be taken, deceived, as far as Lisbon, where she would on no account agree to go. There she was entrusted to the care of Dr. Egas Moniz, at the Hospital de Santa Marta. In vain did that distinguished specialist subject her to various treatments. The results were nil.

Debalde aquele distinto especialista a submeteu a diversos tratamentos. Os resultados foram nulos.

Finally Drs. Júlio de Matos, Sobral Cid and Júlio Dinis held a medical consultation on her. The unanimous opinion of the three physicians, extremely painful for the family, was that the patient would never be cured or, if a cure were possible, she would only be cured after many years. Meanwhile her mother went several times on foot to Fátima with some girls who were friends of her daughter in order to implore her cure. She made the whole journey always barefoot, which was a great sacrifice for her, because she was not used to walking barefoot.

To the extraordinary surprise of the attending doctors, the patient recovered the use of reason when it was least expected, and was able, straight away, to leave the hospital and return to her home in Torres Novas, in perfectly good health, and from then until today she has not felt any discomfort.

– Francisco José Ferreira, 50 years old, married to Maria da Luz Ferreira, of Alqueidão, Torres Novas, had legs so covered in sores and in so pitiful a state that they inspired in those who saw them a mixed feeling of pity and horror.

His affliction, which was already very old, was attributed to knocks on the shins he had received when he was still a child. He was completely cured, after two novenas made by his wife in the village church and accompanied by him in spirit, with lotions of water mixed with earth from the place of the apparitions.

– Delfina de Jesus Presume, 30 years old, unmarried, daughter of Manuel Lopes Presume and Joaquina de Jesus Presume, of Alqueidão, Torres Novas, suffered from an unknown, most serious, horrible disease. She was treated without satisfactory result by Dr. Augusto Mendes, of Torres Novas, and by Dr. Augusto Correia, of Tomar. She made a novena of communions, applying water with earth from Fátima every day. At the end of the novena she found herself cured.

– Manuel Frazão, 56 years old, of Alcaria, Porto de Mós, a firework maker, suffered from a serious gastrointestinal disease which brought him to death's door. He was cured after making a promise to Our Lady of Fátima, whom he fervently begged to save him so as not to leave his wife and children in poverty.

– Laurentino Carreira Poças, 16 years old, son of Adriano Carreira Poças and Joana Carreira Rebelo Poças, a native of Reguengo do Fetal, consumptive, was cured after his mother promised to go to Fátima and go round the chapel on her knees with an offering on her head.

– Maria do Espírito Santo Mota, 31 years old, of the hamlet of Vargos, parish of Paço, council of Torres Novas, married to José António Mota, being very ill with an attack of bronchopneumonia, found herself cured after her husband invoked Our Lady of the Rosary and made a promise to go with the family to Fátima and give alms in keeping with his means if his wife were cured.

– Maria da Conceição, 21 years old, a native of the hamlet of Carreirancha, parish of Alqueidão da Serra, district of Leiria, daughter of Francisco Correia and Maria dos Anjos, had a severe attack of influenza, then cerebrospinal meningitis, tuberculosis and general paralysis. She was cured by praying the rosary and a visit to the Blessed Sacrament for nine consecutive days and using every day earth from the place of the apparitions dissolved in water for internal and external use.

– António de Oliveira Dias, 58 years old, of the hamlet of Carrascos, parish of Paço, council of Torres Novas, had suffered for twelve years from a chronic pharyngitis, resistant to all treatment and considered incurable by the doctors. He was cured after making a promise to go to Fátima to thank Our Lady for his cure, if she would deign to obtain that grace for him.

– Dona Maria Manuel dos Santos, 25 years of age, daughter of the late Carlos Alberto dos Santos and of Dona Amélia Júlia dos Santos, living at rua de D. Estefânia, no. 115, 3rd floor, Lisbon, suffering from a double tuberculous coxalgia, was cured after the pilgrimage that a sister of hers made to Fátima to ask Our Lady for her cure.

– António José, of Barreira, parish of Serra, Tomar, was consumptive, and the attending doctor had forbidden him to work at his trade, which is making tacks, whence the people nicknamed him “o tacheira” (the tack-maker). Having had recourse to the intercession of Our Lady of Fátima, he found himself cured from one day to the next, as the doctor himself confirmed. The parish priest, Rev. José Dias Rodrigues, in a letter dated 22 November 1921, says verbatim: “I know that he has been working at his trade and only a few days ago I saw him looking healthy.”

– Maria da Conceição Maia, 47 years of age, married to Joaquim Pedro Crispim, landowner, living at Casal da Agreireira, council of Torres Novas, had suffered daily for some years from numbness or near-paralysis of the arms, to the point that her husband sometimes had to hold them up for her so that she could feed a child she had, and at other times had to warm them with cloths and rub them hard for them to regain a little movement. Full of confidence in Our Lady of Fátima, she washed her arms three times with water and earth from the place of the apparitions and at once found herself completely well.

– Manuel Gaspar, 35 years old, a native of Ribeiros, Vila de Rei, married to Maria Umbelina, fell gravely ill on 15 April 1922, spending days and nights screaming aloud. His whole body was one veritable sore. Everyone thought him lost. The doctors, even the most famous, could neither cure him nor even discover the cause of so horrible an illness. On 13 May many people from his parish went on pilgrimage to Fátima and brought back from there water and earth from the place of the apparitions, saying that they had a prodigious efficacy and had already worked many cures. The poor sick man was filled with joy and confidence and, setting aside all medicines, had his wounds washed with the water and dusted with the earth. After a few dressings of this kind he experienced notable improvement, and at the end of a few days all the wounds had healed, and he is now in perfect health.

Toda a gente o julgava perdido.

– Maria José, 10 months of age, of Viseu, was attacked by a cold, followed by hoarseness and a high fever. Her grandmother, Dona Maria José de Lemos Queirós, had recourse to Our Lady of Fátima, promising alms for the works of the Sanctuary if the child improved. The extraordinary speed with which she was cured, immediately after the promise, without the illness leaving any trace, was considered by the whole family a sign of the beneficent intervention of the Most Holy Virgin.

– “At the beginning of May 1919 I had a nephew who was gravely ill. He was of a rather weak constitution and, already thirteen months old, still had no teeth at all. Great were my fears, and the doctor had no doubts about the seriousness of his condition. What was to be done in this affliction? Invoke Most Holy Mary from the depths of my soul, that she might intercede for me with her Divine Son and grant her maternal protection to the little innocent.

I knew of the protection of the Most Holy Virgin under the invocation of Our Lady of Fátima from the account published in the newspaper “A Guarda”. Under this new title I invoked her and, having placed a portion of earth from the place of the apparitions under the child's pillow,

I found that, immediately afterwards, without discomfort, his first tooth appeared, and after that the second on 13 May, the anniversary of the first apparition. His general condition improved and his teething continued to follow its course. Thus I was led to recognise that once more Most Holy Mary, by this fact, which I consider miraculous, has shown her protection to those who invoke her in this way, so that the doubts raised about the reality of her apparition at Fátima may disappear.

I made a promise, if my prayer were heard, to make public the account I have just given, for I believe, so long as the Church does not say otherwise, that once more, at Fátima, the Most Holy Virgin came down to earth to choose a place where a new sanctuary may be dedicated to Her, so that her children may know how to be fervent in fulfilling their duties and may walk along the road of virtue, which is the one that leads to the only happiness possible in this vale of tears and to the true and eternal happiness of Heaven.

III THE PLAN FOR THE SANCTUARIES

III O PROJETO DOS SANTUÁRIOS

The piety of the faithful ardently desires to raise at the place of the apparitions a grandiose monument in honour of the august Mother of God.

The plan received with most enthusiasm is the construction of a church on the top of the hillock that overlooks the Cova da Iria, at the spot where the seers say the first apparition took place, and of fourteen chapels lining an avenue leading from the district road to the church-monument.

The latter will be dedicated to the coronation of Our Lady and the chapels to the other mysteries of the Rosary.

For these works it was absolutely indispensable to find water. But within a radius of many kilometres no water is to be found at Fátima except in small quantities, coming from rain collected in ponds and cisterns. For this reason a committee of inhabitants of that village took the initiative of having test borings made in the land adjoining the chapel commemorating the apparitions.

The first boring was made on 9 November 1921, after the first open-air Mass, at a distance of forty metres from the chapel. Work having begun in the morning, by noon all the workmen were already quenching their thirst with the water that gushed abundantly from the living rock.

In the last months of summer the water almost disappeared, after work had resumed to increase the capacity of the well, and only one of the walls could be seen weeping a few drops. At the beginning of November 1922, when the works on the well were completed, the well now being many

IV MEMORABLE DATES AND FACTS

IV DATAS E FACTOS MEMORÁVEIS

Francisco Marto fell ill on 23 December 1918 with an attack of bronchopneumonia and died on 5 April 1919, after having made his confession and received the Holy Viaticum with the most edifying sentiments of piety.

– Jacinta de Jesus Marto, Francisco's sister, took to her bed on 23 December 1918, struck likewise by the deadly epidemic which was then raging throughout the world. This illness, so long and so cruel, was a veritable martyrdom for the poor child, who expiated in her innocent body the sins of others. She died in Lisbon, in the Hospital de D. Estefânia, on 20 February 1920, having made her confession and received communion several times during her illness. Shortly before dying she stated that Our Lady had appeared to her twice, a few days earlier, making several revelations to her, condemning the excesses of luxury and indecent fashions and declaring that the sin that led most people to eternal perdition was the sin of the flesh.

– At the time of the apparitions some ill-disposed people who, in connection with the events of Fátima, dared to blaspheme against the Most Holy Virgin were victims of very serious accidents in which almost all of them met their death. Mere coincidences? Cases, not chances? God alone knows.

– During the night of 23 to 24 October 1917 some Carbonários from Santarém stealthily carried off the objects which popular piety had placed at the place of the apparitions, and on the following day they organised a sacrilegious procession in which they displayed those objects, which went through the main streets of that city with the complaisance of the administrative authority and before an entire population deeply indignant and horrified. It is said that the civil governor and the administrator of the council not only permitted but even assisted this ignoble and hideous mockery of a religious procession.

– The most important religious demonstrations that have taken place at Fátima up to today since the apparitions were that of 13 May

1920 and those of 13 May and 13 October 1922. On 13 May 1922 a grandiose procession was organised, which covered a route of more than two kilometres, from the parish church to the site of the apparitions. According to the closest estimates, made by general staff officers who were present, about seventy thousand people came to Fátima that day. All the demonstrations always had a purely religious character and always took place with the greatest order and respect.

V THE OUTRAGE AT FÁTIMA

V O ATENTADO DE FÁTIMA

The seal of the works of God is persecution. That seal is not lacking to the work of Fátima.

So formidable, so systematic and so persistent has been the opposition stirred up by the emissaries of Satan that many people, unmoved by the phenomena and the extraordinary cures, have surrendered, finally convinced, before the irrefutable force of this negative argument.

From the imprisonment of the seers on 13 August 1917 to the abominable bomb outrage against the chapel commemorating the apparitions, the manifestations of infernal fury against the work of Fátima – ineffective, moreover, and even counter-productive – are countless. A detailed account of all these manifestations would be long and would not fit within the narrow limits of this booklet.

We shall therefore confine ourselves to saying just a word or two about the latest outrage. It was committed on 6 March 1922, in the dead of night.

Limitar-nos-emos, pois, a dizer apenas duas palavras acerca do último atentado.

Fear of outbursts of popular anger led the criminals to carry out their horrible design under cover of the shadows of night. Well-founded suspicions fall on certain individuals from Lisbon, Santarém and Vila Nova de Ourém, pointed to as the instigators, perpetrators and accomplices of the abominable outrage, and whose names are being mentioned. The wretches forced the door of the chapel and with blows of a pickaxe opened four holes in the walls, at equal distances, two spans above the floor, placing in each of them a bomb of great power. These four bombs went off, setting fire to the timbers of the roof and bringing it down. A fifth bomb was placed in the hollow where the root of the holm oak is, on which, according to the seers, the feet of the Apparition rested, but it did not explode. The walls of the chapel, though considerably damaged, remained standing.

VI THE SCANDAL OF THE TAVERNS AND STREET VENDORS

VI O ESCÂNDALO DAS TABERNAS E VENDAS AMBULANTES

The famous French convert writer Huysmans3, in his admirable book “Lourdes”, shows that the accursed serpent, unable to avenge itself in any other way on her who crushed its head with her virginal foot, strives with all its ardour to stamp the mark of the ugly and the vulgar on all the works of art and all the demonstrations intended to honour her.

At Fátima this indirect war of the devil against the work of the Virgin, the worst of all, showed itself clearly from the very beginning.

And the instruments of this war – it is sad to say it – are not the ungodly or unbelievers, which would not be surprising, but people of Christian sentiments who seize the opportunity to exploit the apparitions commercially. Thus, little by little, several taverns have been built near the place, which strike a sad and exceedingly unpleasant note in that whole beautiful setting. Nothing can be more contrary to the will of Our Lady than this profusion of places which are, for so many human beings, the occasion of giving themselves over to the practice of one of the most hideous and repugnant vices. How many transgressions of the law of God are committed each day in those accursed dens, which are the cause of the misfortune and poverty of so many families! Men and women in great numbers, lined up in rows along the paths that run from the road up to the chapel, or scattered about various nearby spots, sell every kind of food and drink, turning that place sanctified by the presence of the Queen of Heaven into a real village fair, or worse than that, into a veritable market.

Loreto and Lourdes, not to speak of other places likewise visited by the august Mother of God, are today centres of worldwide exploitation, where numerous Jews and unbelievers have pitched their camps, contributing on a large scale to de-Christianising the population of those towns once so flourishing from the religious point of view.

The ecclesiastical authority has tried to put a stop to such profanation, but with little result. The only effective means of achieving this would be for all pilgrims to resolve to refrain from buying anything whatever from the street vendors and in the taverns built

since the apparitions. This resolution, which for many represents a great sacrifice, would undoubtedly be one of the most meritorious acts, and most pleasing to Our Lady, that the faithful could perform in her honour.

Please God the pilgrims may become fully aware of the importance of this obligation, so that before long such stalls may disappear completely or go and set up some kilometres away from the place of the apparitions.

Only thus will that place keep intact its sacred character, which contributes so intensely to increasing piety and devotion in the souls of believers.

In an official letter to the Reverend parish priest of Fátima, the Lord Bishop of Leiria strictly forbids the sale of wine and the letting off of rockets near the place of the apparitions, granting the Parish Priest the faculty of commuting promises to let off rockets into other works.

VIII PREPARATION FOR CURES

VIII PREPARAÇÃO PARA AS CURAS

“In the presence of this brilliant array of miracles, piled, so to speak, one upon another, and whose evidence forces itself upon the most ordinary good faith, let us rejoice at being children of the Holy Catholic Church, which God does not cease to visit, and to which He continues to give the divine testimony par excellence, the testimony of miracle.

In the early times, miracle was the great proof of the truth of the faith, and, although at present it is not so necessary, it is no less useful to our understanding; and experience shows the power with which it revives and consoles our faith.

Let us observe, however, that however numerous and unceasing the miracles of Lourdes may be, it must not be forgotten that there, as in all the sanctuaries of Our Lady, miracle is not and cannot be other than the exception.

Whoever says miracle says an extraordinary intervention of divine Omnipotence in human affairs. It would therefore be ridiculous to imagine that it is enough to drink a few sips of water from the grotto of Lourdes, or to make a novena, or even to go on pilgrimage to the miraculous grotto, to be infallibly freed from an illness.

Confidence in the Immaculate Conception can never be great enough, complete enough; but that confidence must always be governed by a profound love of the will of God and by the most absolute submission to the hidden ways by which Divine Providence guides us. Always, – mark this well! – always the Mother of Mercy hears and grants our supplications, but She grants them in her way, not in ours; she answers them divinely, granting us what is best, most useful for our sanctification. Suffering is often the grace of graces and the most real of all goods. If the Most Holy Virgin does not always judge it fitting to cure the ills of our body, – do not doubt it! – She obtains and bestows on us the graces of resignation and of living faith, a thousand times more useful than all cures.

Let us go, then, to the Immaculate Virgin of Lourdes with these lofty sentiments, the only ones worthy of Christian hearts, and, because we have not been favoured, as others have, with the grace of a miracle, let us not be so foolishly simple as to suppose useless that novena, that application of the grotto water, that confidence in the power of the Virgin, that long and painful pilgrimage which was not crowned with a cure ardently asked for and impatiently awaited.

What is beyond doubt is that the Most Holy Mother of God is never implored in vain and that there can never be excess in having recourse to her maternal heart”.

Thus far Mgr. de Ségur4.

Até aqui Mons. de Ségur4.

Since a miracle is an extraordinary intervention of Providence, and God, in working it and thus making an exception to the laws of nature, has in view an end of a moral order, it is fitting that the sick person who seeks to obtain one in his favour should prepare himself for it, in order to have greater likelihood of being heard. For this reason it should be recommended that the sick who go to Fátima, or who in their homes implore the help of Our Lady of Fátima, besides receiving the holy sacraments of confession and communion with the proper dispositions and praying, and having the pious people of their acquaintance pray, for their intention, should obtain from the doctors treating them certificates as complete and as detailed as possible, dated and authenticated by a notary, to hand over in due course to the commission of inquiry.

Once cured, they should have themselves examined by the same doctors and by others who can testify to their cure.

Otherwise these cures, however extraordinary they may appear, cannot be officially recognised as miraculous, to the detriment of the glory of Our Lady and the good of souls.

IX CHARACTER OF THE PILGRIMAGES

IX CARÁTER DAS PEREGRINAÇÕES

The pilgrimages to Fátima on the 13th of each month have an entirely particular character, in no way resembling the pilgrimage festivals now held at many sanctuaries in our country, which generally result in discredit to the Church and harm to souls. The ever-living memory of the apparitions and of the marvellous events of which Fátima

is the theatre, the atmosphere saturated with the supernatural that one breathes there, the religious awe that imperceptibly takes hold of all who approach the centre of the greatest periodic demonstrations of a religious nature recorded in the annals of Portugal, prevent the outburst of human passions and keep at a distance those who might perhaps be tempted to visit the place of the apparitions without sentiments of piety or at least of respect.

For this reason the pilgrims during the journey give themselves to prayer, sing hymns in honour of the Virgin or keep a relative silence, which does not exclude the natural and innocent liveliness of young people and the wholesome joy of unstained consciences.

At 10 o'clock in the morning there is in the parish church of Fátima Mass, general communion and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, which it is altogether fitting for the pilgrims to attend. Those who wish to receive communion should make their confession the day before in their own villages. The place of the apparitions is a little more than two kilometres from the parish church.

When the attendance is larger and the civil authority does not think to put obstacles in the way, a showy and moving procession is organised, leaving that church in the direction of the Cova da Iria. There, at noon, whenever the weather permits, a Low Mass is celebrated, at which holy communion is given, followed by a sermon generally preached by a notable orator.

As the parish church is situated at the edge of the road leading to the place of the apparitions, the pilgrims, even the latecomers, laudably make a habit of interrupting their journey there for a few moments to pay a brief visit to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
