Description of the document: Fourteen pages of 152x223mm. Although it cannot be made out from the photocopies, the sheets appear to be written on both sides. Nor can it be made out whether the paper has printed lines. In fact, with the exception of sheet 1 (p. 1), which has 34 lines, and of fol. 7v (p. 14), with 31 lines, all the others have 35 lines.

[1] The Miracle?... of Fátima
[1] O Milagre?... da Fátima
Having heard at the end of July that in the parish of Fátima, in the heart of the Serra d’Aire, there were three little shepherds who since May had been favoured on the 13th of each month with a heavenly apparition, we decided to go there in August and in the two following months, since the
children said that the apparition had revealed to them that it would come there for six months. We wanted to gather information, to find out what there was to it, although we were certain that even if it were true we would not see that apparition; but we wanted at least to see the children, to see their attitude during the apparition, and to speak with them afterwards.
So we went there on 13 August. We left home at half past nine in the morning; the day was fine but not very hot, the temperature even pleasant. We set off moved, apprehensive and recollected, expecting I hardly know what. After a drive of nearly 3 hours by motor car we at last reached Fatima, and there we were told that the place of the apparition was at the Cova da Iria, some three kilometres from the village, and we made our way there. The crowd was already large when we arrived. In Fátima a countrywoman had told us: “you'll know at once where it is, you'll see on your right a world of people, that's it.” And so it was. We left the car on the road and walked a few metres to the spot where the crowd was thickest, and we could hear the Lourdes Ave* being sung.
We asked whether the children had arrived yet, for it was difficult to see who was around the holm-oak shrub, the bu-[1v]sh on which, so they said, the apparition alighted.
Indagamos se as creanças já tinham chegado pois difficil era ver quem rodeiava a carrasqueira, arbus-[1v]to, onde segundo diziam pousava a apparição.
They told us no, saying that as the apparition would only take place between noon and one o'clock, the children would only come near that hour. We argued that as it was already nearly one o'clock, the children ought to be there already. “What time are you going by?” a countrywoman asks us. “Is it the modern time? ... Neither the Lady nor the little girls go by that, but by the old time*, which is the true one.” — While we waited we went about talking with the people and asking those who had already been there in the previous months what usually happened. They told us that at the appointed hour the sun would be veiled by light clouds, and that a mist would envelop the bush on which Our Lady, coming down from a cloud, would alight to speak with the children.
Little by little we came across several people we knew in the crowd, and even some of our female relatives. We all gathered to-
Juntamos-nos to-
gether and went on gathering information and commenting on it, finding some of it rather extraordinary and some of it implausible.
das, fômos colhendo informações e commentando-as, achando umas algo extraordinarias e outras inverosimeis.
At this point a man appears telling us that the children would not be coming, because they had been arrested by the municipal administrator* and taken by him to Villa Nova d’Ourem. At first nobody believes it; it is thought to be a joke in bad taste on the man's part, but he asserts it so insistently that a lady offers to go to Fatima in her motor car to find out what had happened there. She came back, and in her face we all see that the news is true. The administrator, having offered to take the children to the Cova da Iria after interrogating them, treacherously takes them under arrest to Villa Nova d’Ourem. By what right? [2] What had the children done to be arrested?... nothing; it was the persecution that was beginning.
Everyone protests, everyone is indignant, but it is an orderly protest, and although there are a great many people there, some 5 to 6 thousand, nobody thinks of rising up or fighting. Those who were there were believers, people full of faith, not brawlers.
Of the people present, many think of going away, but from the people above all this cry goes up: “Let us stay and wait, the hour has not yet come, and if this is a thing from Heaven it will show itself, even though the children have been arrested, for against the power of God and of the Virgin, the authorities can do nothing”.
We admire the people's faith, and we all stay, full of anxiety, waiting for the announced hour.
As we had forgotten the 37 minutes by which the clocks had long since been put forward*, at 2 o'clock we were all already thinking of leaving, believing that, since the children were absent, nothing out of the ordinary would happen.
But at that very moment we heard an enormous murmur, which made us all turn round, and we were then privileged to witness the most moving display of faith we had ever seen.
The people, all falling on their knees, with hands and eyes raised to Heaven, implored God and the Virgin; the men, and they were the majority, bareheaded, kneeling on the ground, let their tears flow freely. It was truly impressive.
Everyone was looking at the sky, which was covered by a light cloud, like the finest white lace, rosy in places. The sun, which for an instant hid itself completely, left us lit by a strange light, with yellow patches to be seen on the ground and on all of us, and a great drop in temperature, as happens when there is an [2v] eclipse of the sun. Someone says: — ‘Look at the mist around the holm-oak shrub!’ We looked and indeed it was there; was it really a mist? was it smoke? was it dust?... it could have been any of these things, but to me it seemed more like smoke which, coming out as if from a censer, rose from the ground in light spirals and at once dissolved around the bush.
Some said it was dust raised by a light breeze, but how could one explain that the breeze blew only in that spot, and that it always happened so on the 13th of each month?! ... By then the sun had already regained all its former brightness. Suddenly a man from Lapas (a place not far from Torres Novas), who had gone there only to please his wife and who did not believe the miracle possible, cries out bathed in tears: “I see, I see the Lady!!! Look, in this direction, between those two clouds, don't you see her?” We all looked in the direction indicated but... none of us saw anything more than the clouds. Nevertheless the man, full of faith, kept saying: “Arrest me if you like, but I shall always say what I saw”!
His wife saw nothing, but she was radiant that it was her husband who had seen, for he did not believe; she believed, she did not need to see.
Did this man really see something, or was it mere suggestion? — He was neither an old man nor a child; he was a man of about forty, therefore in the full strength of life and for that reason perhaps less apt to be influenced by suggestion. He was not an atheist, for he had come from his home to Bairro, a place close by, to hear a sermon, but he was an unbeliever in the miracle.
Other ordinary people said they had seen, but what did they see? I do not know, but of those I spoke with, the one who impressed me most was the man from Lapas.
[3] I went to Fatima without presuming to see Our Lady, though I believed that She might well show herself to children and to pure and innocent souls; but if I did not come back consoled either by having been favoured with the vision or by having acquired the certainty I had gone there to seek, that Our Lady really appeared to the children, I nevertheless came back much consoled by the great and spontaneous manifestation of faith I had witnessed, and which I never expected to witness in this Portugal of ours, where erroneous doctrines have so shaken the faith of the people. But God be praised! there is still much faith in Portugal, and in the two following months I was yet to see the number of those taking part grow far beyond all my expectation.
From there we went, all very impressed, to the house of the Revd parish priest of Fatima, to gather more information, and above all information we could trust. But His Reverence was very reserved, telling us he did not want to contribute in any way to influencing others by suggestion.
Only there did we learn that the three children, natives of Aljustrel, a small village in the parish of Fatima, said that a Lady appeared to them on the 13th of each month, spoke with them, answered their questions, and urged them to pray the rosary and offer it to Our Lady of the Rosary. The Revd. parish priest would not even tell us how the children described the apparition.
So we came back from Fátima convinced that something out of the ordinary had taken place. An eclipse of the sun is a known fact, even a common one if you like, but how is one to explain that in four consecutive months it always took place on the same day and at the same hour, without science having announced it? And that mist which was seen only in that spot? [3v] We learned afterwards that the children, set free on the 15th, said that on the 19th they had been favoured with a new apparition, not at the Cova da Iria but at Valinhos, where they were pasturing the flock. That the Lady had again urged them to pray the rosary in honour of Our Lady of the Rosary
so that the war would abate, and that because they had been arrested on the 13th the same signs would not be seen the following month, and that the miracle would be better known. But that She would come on 13 September to the Cova da Iria, and that the children should go there too.
On that day we were at Caldas da Rainha, but we went to Fatima once again. The morning was lovely; the sky, an intense blue, was completely cloudless; the sun was brilliant and very hot, and there was not the slightest breeze.
We arrived there near noon; the crowd of people was even much larger than in August. I cannot estimate it, but in August it was reckoned that some 5 to 6 thousand people were there, and in September some 15 to 20 thousand.
Everyone feared that the children would again be prevented from coming, but God did not allow it. Meanwhile the people present went on singing the Ave and other hymns, one of them to the Senhora da Carrasqueira*, a hymn made up by the people, whose words I have not yet managed to obtain; others were praying the rosary. The children arrived and began to pray the rosary, which the eldest led; they then prayed the Litany*. Suddenly, without the sky clouding over, a change in temperature was felt, the heat of the sun was seen to have lessened, and the yellow patches were seen on the ground, and could also be noticed above all on the white blouses some ladies were wearing. It was only an instant; it all passed quickly. The people, as in August, fell to the ground on [4] their knees, manifesting their faith.
In August there was not a single priest there; they did not want it said that they went there to influence the people by suggestion. In September I saw a few there, but they were all looking for natural phenomena and trying to convince themselves that there was only that. They said nothing and hardly spoke to the people unless the people spoke to them, and as I passed I heard one of them say that for the time being one should neither affirm nor believe those things.
I saw only the slight eclipse of the sun, but many people saw a star, or rather a very small cloud, like a tiny
flake of white cotton wool, which, like a shooting star, crossed the firmament, coming from east to west, and disappeared into space as if suddenly submerged! I heard this from more than one person, told in the same way, without these people being together or hearing the others tell it. It therefore deserves all my credence. This passage of the cloud or star over the holm-oak shrub coincided with the hour at which the children say they saw the Lady.
There were also those who said they had seen two stars, and some people asserted they had seen three! Wouldn't that be rather a lot of stars together?!... I do not know, but what it seemed to me was that those who said they had seen them were convinced they were telling the truth.
We went back to Caldas impressed, and the same happened to many other people who went there from Caldas; it impressed us so much that the acquaintances who came to our house for news at once resolved to go to Fatima in October. And yet we assured everyone that we had seen nothing but a slight eclipse of the sun and an extraordinary manifestation of faith.
The 13th of October came, and although the morning was [4v] foul and rainy, and it had rained during the night, which had not happened for months and was therefore already a grace God was granting us, for the fields were extremely dry, we took courage and set off for Fatima. When we reached Torres Novas it was raining torrentially. Nevertheless we went on, after sheltering for a few minutes in a garage. We were in a hurry to arrive, but God had decided that we would not arrive in time to see the solar phenomenon that so impressed everyone.
Shortly after leaving Torres Novas we had an accident from which we escaped only miraculously. The car sank into the edge of the road, where the ground was unsound, and this began to give way little by little. One wheel of the front axle was already in the air, and the rear one was no more than a span away from the abyss, and even that little ground seemed about to give way too. We got out of the car, and thought we would not be able to get it out of there, and we gave thanks to God
for having escaped. Two oxen are yoked to the car and at the first pull it is worse off than before. The car is very big and very heavy, so more oxen are fetched, and four are yoked to it. The slightest false movement would have sent the car rolling down a bank some three metres high, dragging some men with it in the fall. The danger is great; we invoke Our Lady of the Rosary and the signal is given for all to pull in the same direction. A single pull, and the car glides beautifully into the middle of the road. We spent an hour and forty minutes over this, standing still on the road under a fine, persistent rain, and with our feet soaked. I had a very bad cold and was very hoarse, and although I had been caught in a great deal of rain and had got my feet very wet, I did not get worse; on the contrary, I came home less hoarse.
[5] God granted me another grace. I am ordinarily very impatient, yet although I was greatly vexed to see that I would not arrive in time, I did not grow impatient. On the contrary, I always felt resigned and in good spirits.
[5] Outra graça me fez Deus. Antes pelo contrario, senti-me sempre conformada e bem disposta.
We continued our journey, and finally reached Fatima, but only half an hour after the marvellous phenomenon had taken place, which is now known to everyone through the beautiful descriptions published by the "Seculo"* and other newspapers.
What an immense vexation not to have seen it!
Having arrived at Fatima I look for people I know, to exchange impressions. They all tell me the same thing, they all saw... But saw what?... I ask them: "We saw the sun, covered as if by a silver plate, in constant rotating movement, giving off red, yellow and purple rays, and seeming to come loose from the sky and approach the earth."
I spoke with the people; they told me the same, though in other words. They told me they had seen Our Lady, St Joseph, the Child Jesus, and what do I know?... the whole heavenly court; at the same time as they had seen the sun dance. I did not believe in so many visions.
It is true that it is possible they thought they had seen; suggestion perhaps. Our people, generally very ignorant, are very credulous, and it would be easy for them to convince themselves that they really saw what they wished to see. It is indeed thanks to this ease of conviction that demagogic doctrines have at times been listened to and believed by them!
In the more educated classes nobody told me they had seen the heavenly apparition, but it is certain that everyone, educated and uneducated, was manifesting their faith. And what a magnificent and imposing manifestation of faith was that of that enormous crowd of about 50 thousand people, almost all brought there by faith, by the desire to make certain of the truth of the facts [5v] they had heard related! In almost every eye there were tears, but tears of the boundless joy that filled their souls. Everyone was convinced that something supernatural had taken place, and they thanked God for still remembering this poor and so guilty Portugal.
Magnificent was the profession of faith of the engineer Mr João Amado, who, heedless of what others might think and without fear, proclaims it aloud. His gesture is beautiful, both at that moment and when he humbly accuses himself of being a sinner; beautiful and edifying. Would that he had imitators!
Once again we did not manage to speak to the children, as everyone was crowding round them trying to talk to them, and as it was getting late we went home.
I did not come back from Fatima fully convinced that Our Lady had appeared to the children, although nothing made me unwilling to believe it. To God nothing is impossible, but I had doubts, and those doubts still persist, for I recognise that only the Church has the right to pronounce clearly on the case.
But if I did not have the consolation of seeing my doubts dispelled by some resounding proof, I was consoled, and greatly, to see that gathering of people who went there with great faith and enthusiasm. Not even the persistent rain that soaked the roads stopped them going there! And God knows with what sacrifice many went there, some sacrificing more or less fragile health, and so
running the risk of falling ill, others making financial sacrifices, both because some lost two and three days to go there and because transport was very expensive, given the great distance that separates Fatima from any railway station.
I became convinced that in Portugal there is still much faith, and that with our people, who are good, something can still [6] be done, and that for their ideal they are capable of working and sacrificing themselves with love, joy and enthusiasm. — And as proof, you had only to see them marching through the mud, along the soaked roads, over the slippery stones, cheerful, without flagging, full of courage, now joyfully intoning the “Ave” and other hymns, now piously reciting the rosary together. Certainly a revival can still be hoped for from this people.
I went back to Fatima on 19 October to see the children and speak with them. With us went a priest* who had already interrogated them several times, and those interrogations are most interesting.
Unlike some people, I liked the children immensely; they are robust, healthy, cheerful, frank and likeable, with an ease of manner natural to their age. They did not run away from us, but received us kindly. We were present at a lengthy interrogation of each child separately. They answer frankly, promptly and with the greatest simplicity. Nevertheless one can see that they do not much like being interrogated, that it bores them, and that they answer only because they feel obliged to.
If the vision is genuine, there would seem to be a certain difference in the way it revealed itself to each child. Thus the eldest, Lucia, was certainly the most privileged; she saw, heard and spoke with the apparition, making requests and asking questions of it, and obtaining answers. The youngest, Jacintha, saw and heard the Lady but never spoke to her, nor did She address her directly. The little boy, Francisco, saw the Lady, but never heard her speak or even saw her move her lips, and never saw Her as distinctly as on 13 October.
[6v] We questioned the children to learn how the first apparition had come about. They answered simply that on 13 May, when they were pasturing their flock at the Cova da Iria, there was a great thunderstorm. They were thinking of gathering the flock and going away, when out of a flash of lightning they saw a Lady appear. Frightened, they wanted to run away, but the apparition told them not to, for it would do them no harm. Before the thunderstorm began the children had been praying their rosary, and the apparition told them to pray the rosary to Our Lady of the Rosary so that the war would abate, and to come back there every month, for it would come there for six consecutive months. — The children went back there in June and say that the Lady appeared to them and this time told them to learn to read, which the children did not do at once, because there was not, and never had been, a teacher in Fatima. Now, without anyone having asked for one, a teacher from the mobile schools* turns up, appointed there for two years, and the children have already begun to attend school with considerable progress, above all Lucia.
The children went on their pious pilgrimage to the Cova da Iria on the 13th of every month, except in August, when they were arrested. They say they always saw the Lady, that Lucia always spoke with Her, that she asked her for some cures and conversions; that the Lady promised her to cure and convert some, and not others. That she always told them to pray the rosary, and told them that she wanted a little chapel in that place dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary. What can there be in all this? — The children are not lying, I am sure of that; they believe they saw what [7] they affirm they saw. — Nervous suggestion then?... Perhaps, but the children seem to me robust and healthy, and show not even the slightest symptoms of nervousness, and moreover the milieu in which they live seems to me ill suited to suggestions of this kind.
An exploitation, as many say!? ... But to what end? The children's parents are (for the milieu in which they live) well-off, and the children receive no donations at all; indeed they proudly rebuff anyone who offers them any, saying they do not need money.
Uma exploração como muitos dizem!? ...
Why, there are even those who say it is a woman who is exploiting this case!! A woman, but what woman? where is she? with what intention, how does she exploit it? I confess I do not understand; my understanding does not reach so far. In Fatima there is not even anywhere to spend money, so neither can it be the trade there that is thinking of exploiting the case, for it seems to me it has gained very little from the crowds there! — Others went further; they even claimed that the works carried out on the Church of Fatima were already being paid for by the alms that had been given to the children! Malice? Ignorance? or what? It is certainly a will to speak ill and to want to see things that do not exist. The works on the Church were already very far advanced at the time of the first apparition and have continued there without needing to resort to exploitations.
And with the idea of any and every exploitation set aside, there remains only that of nervous suggestion, and I set that aside from the moment I saw the children and spoke with them. What is there, then? I do not know; I cannot, nor should I, say anything; the Church will say.
But would it be through suggestion that the children foresaw the phenomena, which they announced for fixed days so far in advance? And what power of sugges-[7v]tion did those three ignorant children have, to influence by suggestion so very many people who went there, called only by their word? There is something extraordinary here.
It could, it is true, be that the apparition was not heavenly, that it was even demonic; there are many who have thought so too. And there is no doubt it could be so; the devil is very clever and makes use of so many means to achieve his ends! But would it then be natural for him to advise them to sin no more, to repent and to pray the Rosary, the weapon with which St Dominic fought and vanquished him?
All these arguments that my reason raises make me set aside the idea of exploitation, as well as that of nervous suggestion, and even that of demonic intervention. Let us await the decision of the Church.
The children describe the apparition as being a Lady
very beautiful, the most beautiful they had ever seen, (their very words) with hands raised to Heaven, dressed all in white and gold, with a rosary all white hanging from her right arm.
Once Lucia asked the Lady: “Where are you from and where are you going?” and she says the Lady answered her: “I am from Heaven and I am going to Heaven”. And when Lucia asked her whether she, Jacintha and Francisco would also go to Heaven, the Lady answered that she and Jacintha would go, and that Francisco would go too, but would have to pray the rosary more. Since then the little boy has at times prayed ten rosaries a day!
