THE EPISODES OF FATIMA VI
OS EPISÓDIOS DE FATIMA VI
You will surely have read with attention and pleasure the interesting letter, a copy of which I recently sent you, relating to the events of the thirteenth of September 1917.
That letter, steeped in the most touching sincerity, breathes through every one of its lines a profound and almost unshakeable conviction of the supernatural character of the apparitions. I feel obliged to say that at that date I was very far from sharing such a conviction. On the contrary, I returned from Fatima more sceptical than ever, although I had been greatly moved in contemplating the ardent faith and sincere piety of the pilgrims during my long journey.
What doubtless contributed to this was the fact that I had stayed on the road far from the place of the apparitions, from where I had been able to observe nothing or almost nothing. There is, however, no effect without a proportionate cause, and the evidence of this philosophical axiom gave me an ever keener desire to search out the causes of such an extraordinary influx of people to a spot unknown to the world, unfavoured by nature and lost among the crags of the hills.
I resolved, therefore, to go back to Fatima to get to know the seers personally and question them at length, and to hear from the mouths of
trustworthy witnesses the truthful account of the astonishing episodes that had occurred during the five preceding months.
I set out for there on the twenty-seventh of September, and before the end of the month I wrote a brief report of my journey, which contains the depositions of the three seers.
It is that report which I ask your leave to transcribe, since reading it will interest you, all the more so as it was written before the marvellous and unforeseen events of the thirteenth of October.
The children's depositions are imperfect and deficient, which is easily understood if one considers that it was the first time I was speaking with them, in great haste, in the short interval of a long and tiring journey, and without having drawn up beforehand, or at least formulated mentally, the questions I wished to ask.
But, notwithstanding these imperfections, absolutely impossible to avoid in the circumstances indicated, the statements of the humble little shepherds, made that day in the presence of various witnesses of standing, are by themselves enough to dispel, even in the most cultivated and most exacting minds, any suspicion or apprehension as to their sincerity. The said report, which I reproduce faithfully, runs as follows.
"With the aim of completing the impressions gathered on the thirteenth of this present month of September, and of furnishing myself with the indispensable elements to found, as far as possible, a correct judgement on the events which in the last five months have been unfolding three kilometres to the south of the village of Fatima, at the place called Cova da Iria, I went for the second time last Thursday, the twenty-seventh4, to that picturesque village, gracefully perched on one of the spurs of the majestic Serra d'Ayre.
It was three o'clock in the afternoon when I alighted from the carriage that had brought me from Torres Novas by way of Villa Nova d'Ourem to the humble settlement whose name is today pronounced as a promise of heavenly blessings and graces by tens of thousands of lips from one

Sorry not to be able to exchange a few words with him on the subject that had brought me there, I resolved to go to the house of the children favoured with apparitions of the Most Holy Virgin and to hear from their own mouths the detailed account of the strange events, the news of which has day after day been attracting to Fatima countless people of all classes and social conditions.
Two kilometres from the parish church and the presbytery, in an insignificant little hamlet called Aljustrel, belonging to the parish, stand the modest dwellings of the seers' families.
The two younger children were away. I went to the house of the eldest, where the mother invited me to come in and sit down, an invitation I accepted. In reply to a question of mine about the whereabouts of her daughter, whom I was looking for, she told me that she was gathering grapes on a small property belonging to her, two kilometres away.
As duas creanças mais novas estavam ausentes. Dirigi-me a casa da mais velha, onde a mãe me convidou a entrar e sentar-me, convite a que accedi.
Someone at once offered to go and call her at the mother's bidding. Meanwhile the two younger children, who had come back from the fields, learning from the neighbours that I wished to speak to them, came to me.
They are brother and sister, a boy and a girl. The girl arrived first.
Chegou primeiro a menina.
Her name is Jacinta de Jesus, she is seven years old and is the daughter of Manuel Pedro Marto and Olympia de Jesus. Rather tall for her age, a little slender without one being able to call her thin, with a well-proportioned face, a dark complexion, modestly dressed, her skirt coming down to her ankles, she has the look of a healthy child, showing perfect normality in her whole physical and moral make-up. Surprised by the presence of strangers who had accompanied me and whom she did not expect to find, at first she shows great embarrassment, answering in monosyllables and in an
almost imperceptible tone of voice the questions I put to her. Moments later her brother appears, a boy nine years of age, who comes with a certain ease into the room where we were, keeping his cap on his head, no doubt because he did not remember that he ought to take it off. A sign his sister made to him to that effect went unnoticed by him. I invited him to sit on a chair beside me, and he obeyed immediately and without any reluctance.
Without delay I began to question him about what he had seen and heard since the month of May last at the Cova da Iria on the thirteenth of each month during the time of the apparition.
Between him and me the following short dialogue took place:
- What have you seen at the Cova da Iria these last months?
- I have seen Our Lady.
- Where does she appear?
- On top of a holm-oak shrub.
- Does she appear suddenly or do you see her coming from somewhere?
- I see her coming from the side where the sun rises and placing herself on the holm-oak shrub.
- Does she come slowly or quickly?
- She always comes quickly.
- Do you hear what she says to Lucia?
- I don't hear.
- Have you ever spoken with the Lady? Has she ever addressed a word to you?
- No, I have never asked her anything; she speaks only with Lucia.
- Whom does she look at, at you and Jacinta too or only at Lucia?
- She looks at all three; but she looks longer at Lucia.
- Has she ever wept or smiled?
- Neither one thing nor the other; she is always serious.
- How is she dressed?
- She has a long dress and over it a mantle that covers her head and comes down to the bottom of the dress.
- What is the colour of the dress and the mantle?
- It is white, the dress having gold stripes.
- What is the Lady's attitude?
- Tenho visto Nossa Senhora.
- Qual é a côr do vestido e do manto?
- É branca, tendo o vestido riscos dourados.
- Qual é a attitude da Senhora?
– That of someone praying. She has her hands joined at the height of her breast.
– É a de quem está a rezar. Tem as mãos postas á altura do peito.
– Does she carry anything in her hands?
– Traz alguma coisa nas mãos?
– She carries, between the palm and the back of her right hand, some beads that hang down over her dress.
– And what does she have on her ears?
– E nas orelhas o que tem?
– Her ears can't be seen, because they are covered by the mantle.
– What colour are the beads?
– De que côr são as contas?
– They are white too.
– São tambem brancas.
– Is the Lady pretty?
– A Senhora é bonita?
– Yes, she is.
– É, sim.
– Prettier than that girl you see there?
– Prettier.
– Mais.
– But there are ladies much prettier than that girl...
– She is prettier than anyone I have ever seen.
The questioning of Francisco concluded, I called Jacinta aside, who was playing in the street with other children, had her sit on a little stool beside me and subjected her too to an interrogation, succeeding in obtaining from her answers as complete and detailed as her brother's.
– Have you seen Our Lady on the thirteenth of each month since May?
– I have.
– Tenho visto.
– Where does she come from?
– Donde é que ella vem?
– She comes from Heaven, from the side of the sun.
– Vem do Ceu, do lado do sol.
– How is she dressed?
– Como está vestida?
– She has a white dress, trimmed with gold, and on her head a mantle, also white.
– What colour is her hair?
– De que côr são os cabelos?
– Her hair can't be seen; it is covered by the mantle.
– Does she wear earrings?
– Traz brincos nas orelhas?
– I don't know, because her ears can't be seen either
– What is the position of her hands?
– Qual é a posição das mãos?
– Her hands are joined at the height of her breast, with the fingers turned upwards.
– Are the beads in her right hand or her left?
To this question the child first answers that they were in the right hand, but then, owing to a deliberate and captious insistence on my part, she appears perplexed and confused, not knowing how to say precisely which of her own hands corresponded to the hand in which the Apparition held the rosary.
– What was it that Our Lady recommended to Lucia most earnestly?
– She told us to pray the rosary* every day.
– And do you pray it?
– E tu reza-lo?
– I pray it every day with Francisco and Lucia.
Thus far Jacinta's deposition.
Até aqui o depoimento da Jacinta.
In a coming letter I shall transcribe the deposition of Lucia, the protagonist of the events of Fatima, a deposition no less interesting and longer than those of the other two seers, Francisco and Jacinta, whose first cousin she is.
