Convinced of the absolute sincerity of the three children, who said they had seen Our Lady five times at the place called Cova da Iria, in the parish of Fátima, municipality of Vila Nova de Ourém, and that she had declared that on the 13th of this October she would make all the people believe in her appearing, I returned for the third time to that village. Although I feared that the children might be victims of a hallucination, a hypothesis that everything, however, led me to reject, or that the extraordinary events taking place there might be brought about by the spirit of darkness for unknown ends, the conviction was taking ever deeper root in my mind that Fátima was the place destined by the Queen of Heaven, Patroness of Portugal, as the theatre of new prodigies of her goodness and mercy. For that reason I decided to set out some days in advance, taking the train at Santarém station on the 10th, at half past eleven in the morning, to Chão de Maçãs, the railway station nearest to what may perhaps come to be regarded, by the grace of Heaven, as the Portuguese Lourdes or La Salette*. A horse-drawn trap carried me to Vila Nova de Ourém, from where, after exchanging impressions with the Rev. Parish Priest of that town about the events that prompted my journey, I went on in another trap to Fátima, where I alighted at 11 o'clock at night, going immediately to the hamlet of Montelo, two kilometres away. There I lodged at the home of the Gonçalves family, highly regarded for their honesty and their religious sentiments. The following morning I intended to go and question the seers again at Aljustrel, where they live, three kilometres from
Montelo. Before that, however, I questioned Manuel Gonçalves Júnior2, aged 30, married, son of my host, an intelligent man endowed with great good sense and uncommon powers of observation.
Montelo.
The questions I put to him and his answers were as follows:
1a – Do the parents of the children of Aljustrel who say they are favoured with apparitions of Our Lady have a good reputation, are they honourable people of good conduct?
– Francisco and Jacinta's parents are very good people, deeply religious and respected and esteemed by all. The father has the reputation of being the most upright man in the place. He is incapable of deceiving anyone. Lúcia's father sometimes gets drunk, and seldom goes to church. He is not, however, ill-natured. On 13 July some companions of his, with bad intent, got him drunk with the aim of leading him to commit some folly at the place of the apparitions. And indeed, although, as always, he let his daughter go to that place, he ordered the people to withdraw. He is the owner of the heath where the holm-oak shrub that serves as pedestal for the Apparition stands. The people, seeing him in a state of drunkenness, paid no heed to this order and a man pushed him, making him fall. The mother is an honest, religious and hard-working woman.
2a – What do the inhabitants of Fátima think of what the children say? Do they not believe them? Do they think them liars? Or do they think them victims of a hallucination?
– At first the people did not want to go to the Cova da Iria. Nobody believed the children. On the thirteenth of June, the day of the second apparition, there was a feast at the parish church in honour of St. Anthony. At the Cova da Iria there were only some sixty people at the time of the apparition. Francisco and Jacinta's parents had gone early in the morning to Porto de Mós to the fair called "of the thirteenth", in order to buy oxen, and got back after nightfall. In their absence their house filled with people who wanted to see the children and ask them questions. At present a large part of the people think the children are telling the truth. For my part, I am convinced of it.
3a – On the days of the Apparitions have there been extraordinary signs? Are there many people who claim to have seen them?
– The signs are many. In August almost all who were present saw those signs. A cloud came down to the holm-oak shrub. In July the same was noticed. There was no dust at the place. The cloud made the air dusty, so that it looked misty.
– Was there any other sign?
– Houve mais algum sinal?
– In the sky, near the sun, white clouds are seen which turn successively bright red (blood-coloured), pink and yellow. The people take on this last colour. The light of the sun diminishes considerably in intensity.
A luz do sol diminui bastante de intensidade.
A rumbling was also heard in July and in August.
4a – Is anyone suspected of having put the children up to play-acting?
– No, nor is that credible.
– Não, nem isso é verosímil.
5a – Have many people come from outside to see the children and talk to them?
– Countless people have come from all over.
– Têm vindo inúmeras pessoas de toda a parte.
6a – Do they accept the money people want to give them?
6a – Elas aceitam o dinheiro que lhes queiram dar?
– They have accepted a little when people press them hard, but they do not accept it willingly.
7a – Are the families poor? Do they live by their work? Do they have property?
7a – As famílias são pobres? Vivem do seu trabalho? Têm propriedades?
– They are not poor. They are even well off. And if Lúcia's family is not more so, that is because the father frequently gives himself up to drink, and so neglects the cultivation of his land.
8a – Are there people in Fátima who have been close to the children during the apparitions?
9a – What does Lúcia do during the time of the apparition?
– She prays the rosary*. When she addresses the Lady, she speaks aloud.
– Reza o terço. Quando se dirige à Senhora, fala alto.
I heard her myself in June, because I was nearby. Some people claim they hear the sound of the answers.
10a – Is the place of the apparitions also much visited on other days, by devout people or by the curious?
– It is much visited, above all on Sundays. The biggest crowds are at night. Many people go there, from far and near, and still more from outside the parish. They pray the rosary and sing hymns in honour of the Virgin.
– É muito frequentado, sobretudo aos domingos. A maior concorrência é à noite.
This interrogation over, I set off for Aljustrel and, on reaching that place, went immediately to Lúcia's home. She was beside her house serving as helper to a mason who was mending the roof. As soon as she saw me, she respectfully asked my blessing. The mother appeared at the same instant and most willingly granted the request I made to her to let me question her daughter again. First, however, I asked her some questions.
Logo que me viu, pediu-me respeitosamente a bênção.
1a – Is your daughter related to Francisco and Jacinta?
– She is their cousin, because my husband is their mother's brother.
– É prima, porque meu marido é irmão da mãe deles.
2a – How did you learn that the Lady appeared to your daughter the first time? Was it she who told you?
– I learned of it from the other children's family, because Lúcia advised her companions to say nothing for fear they would be scolded. Only after I questioned her did she say what she had seen.
3a – Did you never scold your daughter for going to the Cova da Iria? Did you always give her complete freedom to go there on the 13th of each month?
– I never forbade her to go to that place. Sometimes I asked her if she wanted to go and she answered yes, other times she herself said she would go, if I gave her leave.
4a – Do the three children usually go to the place of the apparitions alone or do they go accompanied by other children?
– They go alone. Other children almost always go too, but accompanied by their parents, and they stay beside them; they do not join Lúcia and her cousins.
5a – Did the children tend livestock? To whom did it belong?
5a – As crianças guardavam gado? A quem é que ele pertencia?
– Lúcia tended a small flock of sheep and her cousins another. Those flocks belonged to their respective families. Sometimes they put the animals together, but only because they wanted to. The sheep Lúcia tended I have already sold.
6a – How have the children been dressed when they go?
– The first time they were shabbily turned out, as shepherds almost always are. The other times, on the 13th of each month, they go dressed in light-coloured clothes and wear a white kerchief on their heads.
– It is true; I own that book and I have read it to my children.
– É verdade; possuo esse livro e tenho-o lido a meus filhos.
8a – Did you read the story of the apparition of La Salette in front of Lúcia and other children?
– Only in front of Lúcia and my other children.
9a – Did Lúcia sometimes talk about the story of La Salette, showing in any way that the story had made a great impression on her mind?
– I never heard her say anything about it, as far as I remember.
– Nunca lhe ouvi dizer nada a esse respeito, se bem me recordo.
10a – When the children were arrested by the administrator* of Vila Nova de Ourém, did anyone go to demand that they be returned to their parents?
– A brother of Francisco and Jacinta went to talk to them at the administrator's house. The administrator's wife asked whether he had come to fetch the children, to which he answered no. The administrator himself brought them back to Fátima.
O próprio administrador as veio trazer à Fátima.
11a – Have many people come to see your daughter?
11a – Tem vindo muita gente ver sua filha?
– Many people have come almost every day.
This interrogation concluded, I invited four entirely trustworthy men to attend the interrogation of Lúcia as witnesses: Anastácio da Teresa5, Gonçalves da Silva6 and Manuel Henriques7, all of Aljustrel, and Francisco Rodrigues8, of Moita do Martinho. I immediately began the questioning of the seer.

Imediatamente dei princípio à inquirição da vidente.

Then I engaged in a long conversation with the father of the innocent children about the events that have so preoccupied him. He gave me some quite interesting information, which I shall now relate, because it sheds much light on those events.
