My good and most excellent Friend

Minha bôa e Exma Amiga

I received your letter just as I was getting into the car to leave for Fatima; so, passing through Torres Novas, I was able to collect the money, which I handed personally to the Reverend Parish Priest of Fatima, not without strong protest on his part. He showed me an official letter containing all the instructions of His Excellency the Archbishop of Mytilene* on this matter, among them the express recommendation not to accept donations: he should rather let [1v] persons of recognised integrity keep them, but never himself.

After much argument, and having shown him that it was not my own money, I left it with him, telling him to hand it over to His Excellency the Archbishop if he saw fit, and I wrote on the outside where it came from6. I am more and more impressed by the

6 In the Episcopal Archive of Leiria there is a handwritten note by Father Manuel Marques Ferreira, parish priest of Maceira (from June 1920 to February 1927); it is undated, but certainly later than the arrival of Dom José Alves Correia da Silva in the diocese of Leiria (5 August 1920), and records: "Money which I have in my possession intended for the expenses of building the Chapel in honour of Our Lady, of the Cova da Iria at Fatima. Handed over by Dona Maria de Jesus Raposo of Torres Novas, the proceeds of a collection after a lecture given by Dr. Garrett fº* (Granja): 50:500* [...] Fr. Manuel Marques Ferreira Parish Priest of Maceira and former parish priest of Fatima -" (AEL, L1-

Pe. Manuel Marques Ferreira Prior de Maceira e antigo parocho de Fatima -" (AEL, L1-

simplicity and sincerity of that good Parish Priest. I read him Your Excellency's letter, and he told me at once that the book he knew was in the family's house was the "Missão Abreviada"*, where indeed the 12th instruction contains a short account of the apparition of La Salette*. The eldest little girl told me that she was only told about it long after [2] Our Lady appeared to her, and the other children knew nothing whatever about the matter. The mother can read a little; the little girl now goes to school, and I could not get her to come with us to the place without her mother's permission: the parish priest had to send to the house to ask for it. Lucia is worn out with visitors and questioning that begin at daybreak and go on far into the night. The parish priest told me that if they had tormented him like that with questions he would have gone mad by now. He says that the little girl, especially when she sees Priests, just wants to run away, so much do they batter her with questions and repetitions.

It was the little boy, who is the brother of little Jacintha and cousin of Lucia, [2v] who yesterday8 left me an excellent impression: very bright eyes, a very cheerful face, very much at ease. He confirmed (we interviewed him on his own) that at the moment of the miracle Lucia had said: Look at the Sun. *. But Lucia says, and maintained, that she did not remember either Our Lady saying it to her or herself repeating it. Yet the fact is that several other trustworthy people who were beside her affirm it. I believe the little girl gets confused because she is so exhausted and tired.

What she confirms is that Our Lady told her that the war would end that day, when She reached Heaven, and that very soon the soldiers would return to their families. [3] She says she is not quite sure whether Our Lady told her she was Our Lady of the Rosary or that she wanted the Chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary; it was one or the other.

As for the secret, she did not tell her to tell it to anyone, and they still keep it as stubbornly as ever.

-79). The addition e antigo parocho de Fatima (‘and former parish priest of Fatima’) is in the handwriting of the bishop of Leiria. We believe that this note refers precisely to the money handed to the parish priest of Fátima on 26 October 1917.

The little boy, when the people with me offered him everything they could think of, refused it all and ended by saying very enthusiastically: "Not even if you gave me the world". His father, who is also the little girl's father, is a firm believer; the Parish Priest says that if he errs, it is by excess. But Lucia's father really is an alcoholic and not very religious; the little girl says he prays sometimes, but I believe he cares little about it.

[3v] It is certain that some Carbonários* from Santarém went to Fatima on the night of the 22nd to the 23rd and brought back what remained of the holm-oak shrub, which I saw had been cut down12; little Lucia even cut off a few small slivers for me with a little penknife from what was left of the stump, which is not even a span* above the ground. They took the arch, the bench, the lanterns, in short everything they found there, and on the 24th they staged a mock procession, which outraged all Catholics.

This persecution by the wicked, in my poor opinion, serves rather to convince one of the truth of the miracle, don't you think?

By this post I received this information from Laura Avellar, who is a trustworthy person and a distant relative of mine besides, and lives there.

[4] The little girls do not expect Our Lady to appear again.

She told them to pray the rosary a great deal to make amends to her Son, who was much offended.

Our Lady stood on the holm-oak shrub and not on clouds.

She had her hands joined and opened them to speak (like Our Lady of Graces*), with a rosary hanging from her hands. It was after Our Lady disappeared, when they looked at the Sun, that they saw Her there with St. Joseph blessing the people, and the child Jesus. But only half-length and in different colours. This is explained by the varied colours that all of us saw, although at 1st sight the children's explanation may seem strange.

I think that on this last page I have already answered all

Your Excellency's questions, which I had no-[4v]ted down so as not to miss any.

I am very, very sorry to hear of the state of apathy of your most excellent husband, but I trust that Our Lady, who surely has need of his services at this important juncture, will make him better and allow him to contribute greatly to shedding light on this matter, which is of such interest to all good Catholics.

Your Excellency may always count on the humble services of your grateful friend; please accept, with all your family, our affectionate regards.
