Interrogation of the children on 19 October 1917

Interrogatório das crianças a 19 de outubro de 1917

After midday I set off by motor car for Fátima by the road through Mendiga, Reguengo de Fetal and Porto de Mós. I reached Fátima at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. At the Cova da Iria, beside the holm oak of the apparitions, some pious country women, kneeling, are devoutly praying the rosary. The holm oak, reduced to its trunk, which is little more than a span high, is wrapped in branches of wild plants and flowers. The devotion of the pilgrims, who wished to keep a memento of the bush that served as a pedestal for the Virgin during the apparitions, has almost completely destroyed it. Everything else remained in the same state as it was seen on the 11th, two days before the last apparition. I then went to the house of Jacinta's family, where the three seers were, being subjected to an interrogation by Fr. José Ferreira de Lacerda, parish priest of Milagres and director of the Catholic weekly “O Mensageiro” of Leiria, and at present ensign-chaplain of the Portuguese expeditionary corps, who had come to his home district on leave and wished, before returning to France, to see and speak with the children of Aljustrel. Fr. Lacerda was accompanied by another priest from Leiria and by the parish priest of Fátima. The number of the children's visitors increases from day to day. They come at all hours, from the most distant and opposite parts of the country. The children feel quite worn down. Lúcia above all, because she is questioned at greater length, is profoundly exhausted, and it can be seen that her excessive tiredness forces her to answer the questions put to her without the attention and reflection that would be desirable. She sometimes answers almost mechanically, and it frequently happens that she does not remember certain circumstances of the apparitions well, contrary to what happened before 13 October. If care is not taken to spare the children the fatigue of frequent and lengthy inquiries, their health runs the risk of suffering a profound shock.

With the prior authorisation of Jacinta's parents, in whose house Lúcia, their niece, had slept the previous night, I questioned the three children separately, in the presence of the Most Excellent Dona Maria Cândida de Avelar e Silva and her most excellent daughters Dona Laura de Avelar e Silva, Dona Maria de Avelar e Silva and Dona Leonor de Avelar e Silva Constâncio, of the Quinta da Comenda, Alcanhões (Santarém).

I began with the interrogation of Lúcia, which runs as follows:

1st – On the thirteenth of this month did Our Lady say that the war would end that very day? What were the words she used?

1a – No dia treze do corrente Nossa Senhora disse que a guerra acabava nesse mesmo dia? Quais foram as palavras que empregou?

– She said this: “The war ends this very day; expect your soldiers here very soon”.

2nd – Did she say: “expect your military men here” or “expect your soldiers here”?

– She said: “expect the military men here”.

– Disse: “esperem cá pelos militares”.

3rd – But look, the war is still going on!... The newspapers report that there has been fighting after the thirteenth!... How is this to be explained, if Our Lady said that the war ended on that day?

– I don't know. I only know that I heard her say the war would end on the 13th. I don't know anything more.

4th – Some people assert that they heard you say on that day that Our Lady had declared that the war would end soon. Is that true?

4a – Algumas pessoas afirmam que te ouviram dizer nesse dia que Nossa Senhora tinha declarado que a guerra acabava brevemente. É verdade?

– I said it just exactly as Our Lady had said it.

– Disse tal e qual como Nossa Senhora tinha dito.

5th – On the 27th of last month I went to your house to talk with you, do you remember?

5a – No dia 27 do mês passado fui a tua casa falar contigo, lembra-te?

– I remember seeing you here.

– Lembro-me de o ver cá.

6th – Well, on that day you told me that Our Lady had said that on 13 October St Joseph and the Child Jesus would also come, and that after that the war would soon end, not on that day.

– I don't remember well now how She said it. She could have said that; I don't know. Perhaps I didn't understand the Lady properly.

7th – On the thirteenth of this month did you tell the people to look at the sun?

– I don't remember doing that.

– Não me lembro de assim fazer.

8th – Did you tell them to close their umbrellas?

8a – Mandaste fechar os chapéus?

– The month before I did. The last time I don't remember telling them.

– No outro mês atrás mandei.

9th – Did you know when the sign in the sun was due to begin?

9a – Sabias quando devia começar o sinal no sol?

– No.

– Não.

10th – Did you look at it?

10a – Olhaste para ele?

– I did; it seemed to be the moon.

– Olhei; parecia que era a lua.

11th – Why did you look at the sun?

11a – Porque foi que olhaste para o sol?

– I looked because all those people said to look at the sun.

12th – Did Our Lady say she would pray to her Divine Son for the souls of the soldiers killed in the war?

– No, sir.

– Não, senhor.

13th – Did she say the people would be punished if they did not amend their sins?

– I don't remember if She said it. I think not.

– Não me lembro se Ela o disse. Parece-me que não.

14th – On the 13th you had no doubts, as you do now, about what the Lady said. How are your doubts today to be understood?

– On that day I remembered better; it had been a shorter time before.

– Nesse dia lembrava-me melhor, tinha sido há menos tempo.

15th – What did you see about a year ago? Your mother says that you and other children saw a wrapped-up figure that did not let its face be seen. Why did you tell me last month that it was nothing?

– !...

– !...

16th – That time, did you run away?

16a – Dessa vez fugiste?

– I think I ran away.

– Cuido que fugi.

17th – On the eleventh of this month you would not tell me that on the thirteenth of this month Our Lord blessing the people and Our Lady of Sorrows were to appear. Was it for fear that I would make fun of you, as other people had already done, saying it was impossible? Or was it because many strangers were present and you were shy of saying it in front of so many people? Look, Jacinta has told me everything...

– !...

– !...

18th – When did Our Lady tell you that those apparitions would take place on the thirteenth of October?

– It was on the day she appeared at Valinhos or on the other thirteenth. I don't know exactly.

19th – Did you also see Our Lord?

19a – Viste também Nosso Senhor?

– I saw a figure that seemed to be a man; it looked like Our Lord.

20th – Where was that figure?

20a – Onde estava essa figura?

– It was beside the sun.

– Estava ao lado do sol.

21st – Did you see it bless the people?

21a – Viste-a abençoar o povo?

– I didn't see; but Our Lady had said that Our Lord would come to bless the people.

22nd – If the people knew the secret that Our Lady revealed to you, would they be sad?

– I think they would be as they are, almost the same.

I then proceeded to the interrogation of Francisco.

Em seguida procedi ao interrogatório do Francisco.

– Não ouvia.
13a – Ouvias o som da voz dela?
– Também não ouvia.
14a – Parecia que não falava?
– Parecia.
15a – Não a vias mexer os beiços?
– Não via.
16a – Não a vias rir-se?
– Também não
17a – Viste os sinais no sol? O que foi que viste?

---

---

– I looked and saw that the sun was going round. It looked like a firework wheel.

– Olhei e vi que o sol andava à roda. Parecia uma roda de fogo.

18th – When did the signs appear, before or after the Lady disappeared from the holm-oak shrub?

– It was when the Lady disappeared.

– Foi quando a Senhora desapareceu.

19th – Did you hear Lúcia tell the people to look at the sun?

– I did. She gave a shout for the people to look at the sun.

– Ouvi.

20th – Was it the Lady who told her to tell the people to look at the sun?

– I saw very pretty colours, blue, yellow and others.

– Vi cores muito bonitas, azul, amarelo e outras.

The questioning of Jacinta took place on the way from Aljustrel to Fátima, the Most Excellent Dona Leonor de Avelar e Silva Constâncio listening to her as she led the child by the hand, behind Lúcia and Francisco, who were accompanied by the other ladies mentioned above.

Here is the account of her interrogation.

Eis o relato do seu interrogatório.

1st – On the thirteenth of this month did you see near the sun Our Lord, Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Carmel?

1a – No dia treze do corrente viste ao pé do sol Nosso Senhor, a Senhora das Dores e a Senhora do Carmo?

– I didn't see them.

– Não vi.

2nd – But on the eleventh of this month you told me they were to appear.
